New's Movie Taste: All Stars - ROUND 2 (RESULTS)

11thMay 20, 2022 by NewNightmare7
Hello and welcome back to New's Movie Taste!

Oh my god it's been almost a month since this round started. I would like to apologise for being so slow this time around. My friend was in town for a week and then after I fell into a huge depression and am slowly getting out of it <3 with that my spark for watching movies is slowly coming back. Could disappear but at the moment naur.

Anyways, in regards of this round because I took so long I would have done a non-elimination round but then this game would go on forever.

But Olympia is eliminated anyways for not submitting (when there was like a month to do so) but because its All Stars and early in the season, nateclove will continue the game and we will disregard the elimination last round.

So with that, here are the SAFE peoples:

Thirteen - The People Under the Stairs (1991) - I feel like if there is any person who can be so creatively layered its Wes Craven. He just has such a vision for his films and this is definitely him at his most bombastic. Between the stories of abducted children, incest, racial discrimination, there is so much to unpack and not enough time or words to say about it. So what I will say is that it is one of Wes Craven's finest. The antagonists are truly disturbed and I love the cat and mouse chase Fool has to go through (speaking of which what a dumb as hell name). Its a movie where I can show it to people who would be like what the fuck and I'd have a good time watching it no matter what. I realized though on a rewatch by myself I was a little bored and I think this movie only works for me in a specific setting. Not to crack on it though because it is a good movie!

JayElVeeIsBack - In Time (2011) - I absolutely love the premise of this movie. The idea of time as currency is really interesting to me. Ultimately it comes to the same result however in terms of its politics. I enjoy this movie! Its a cool action thriller that has Roger Deakins in cinematography so obviously it looks great. I don't necessarily know if its multi layered at least in my opinion because it plays on the same themes as normal political thrillers but I can't deny that it is at least a good time so yay for that! Also I just love Cillian Murphy so.

demgirl6 - Fight Club (1999) - Honestly, despite me enjoying the film quite a bit, this has gone over my head in terms of really understanding the movie because my interpretation of it is probably very wrong so I'm not gonna get into it. I will say it does have such great layers to it which it tends to be too smart for me. I will say though that I find it ironic that there are people out there who enjoy this movie for its use of violence (like the mysoginistic men) and have don't understand that it isn't just surface level. I just hate men. Anyways, I think the cast absolutely delivers in its material, particularily Helena Bonham Carter. She is just stunning. Brad Pitt though as the personification of what the narrator wants to be is an investing character as well. I like the contrast of both characters. Overall, this is a movie I really enjoy and while maybe im not the smartest at understanding it, I can appreciate it and learn something everytime I watch it.

Voila - Splice (2009) - I heard alot of stuff about this movie when it came out but never got around to it. It has been on my watchlist since then so finally I get to watch it! And I have to say, I absolutely loved this movie. The concept is amazing and the story is extremely investing. From the get go, with the birth of Fred (or Ginger I can't remember lmao) I was grossed out and immediately on board. Sarah Polley was great in this movie! The real star though is Dren (I can't spell the actresses name) and what it was able to accomplish. There is so much physicality to the role that is played amazingly well. The fast jerking motions were what I thought of the most. Yeah some of the effects haven't aged the best but its still really solid enough to where its not distracting and some of it really grossed me out. This movie is also genuinely fucked up with like this weird play on incest  and playing god like you said. I don't know why but it just works for me. What an amazing submission that totally fits the theme. Also, that poor cat did not deserve to die.

Symmetry888 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004) - You are single-handedly getting me to watch Studio Ghibli movies finally and I absolutely love that for you. I love that Christian Bale is in this movie...no reason why he just is and its ok! But like the real star in my eyes is Josh Hutchinson. So adorable. Billy Crystal is funny too (if you can't tell I watched it in english as it had that kind of vibe). Its such a cute movie I just adore this. The animation was so stunning. Almost breathtakingly beautiful and it flowed so well it was so good. The themes were powerful too. It felt like all the negatives that became of the movie, like growing old turned into a positive outlook on life and not even when it was all resolved but just as the movie went along. It was nice seeing darkness surrounded by optimism. The characters were all investing (ms. Wicked witch chainsmoking through the latter half was a mood) and overall, I just loved this. I will also say that you were just shy of the top 3 so great job from last round to now <3

CarolinaSteele - Shutter Island (2010) - So I have never seen this movie but I know the ending so I was skeptical going into this movie knowing the outcome. But I was also intrigued because I could go in looking for the signs. I found this to be more interesting than I thought because like you said, there are alot of turns and twists so regardless of the ending, I was still thrown for a loop a majority of the movie trying to decipher it. Its also really well made. I like the neo-noir look, it has this dark classy style that makes you uncomfortable. It's also just really well directed and performed. Its so interesting to see Leonardo DiCaprio just immediately unravel his sanity. I will say though that while this movie is good, I probably have no desire to rewatch it and thats not really your fault but rather spoilers since I'm watching the movie as if it was a second viewing therefore I don't need to see it a second time. Its a weird outlook and this movie would work better if I hadn't known but never the less I enjoyed it!

nateclove - The Skin I Live In (2011) - I love Antonio Banderas. He has great stage prescence and theatricality especially in his voice and I've never seen him in a spanish only language film so I was excited! Especially because I've heard some great things about this movie! And wow! Like genuinely...wow that was so fucked up. I can't lie I was focused but a little bit uninterested in the beginning just to its slow pace but then...it just clicked. Like I don't wanna say where because I would totally reccomend it but like damn! That was crazy. I'm still shook I don't know what I was expecting but that was not it. Will I ever rewatch it? No but can I say this was a bizarre movie and a reccomendation? Hell yeah. Its also pretty layered (which can be taken as a pun in the context of the movie/title) so yeah!

And with that here are the TOP 3:

austino15fffan - Saw (2004) - I'm surprised it took 4 seasons to have this movie submitted! It's such a popular one i'm shook. But its ok cause now I can rant about how much I love the Saw movies!!!!!! There is so much I can say and what I will say for the sequels (excluding Jigsaw and Spiral as I don't like them) is that even though their reputation as gore fests arent false, they are the same stylistically and creatively as the first and I will die on that hill. But time to talk about the first one. This was a movie I wasn't allowed to watch as a kid (but I did it anyways) and I absolutely adore it. It has alot of rlaws but I will overlook them just for the sheer creativity displayed on the screen. Even people who don't like the movie can agree that James Wan and Leigh Whannel had a vision and created something interesting. I love the mystery. I love showing this movie to people and getting their reactions. At its core its a psychological thriller mixed with horror elements on the surface and I love this movie. You absolutely nailed this theme!

PennyTrationStan - Eyes Wide Shut (1999) - I'm surprised you called this a boring choice. I haven't seen it. Been on my watchlist for years as I love Kubrick buy just never got around to this one. Despite Kubrick dying just before the film got released i'm glad he got to see out his vision for the most part...a 400 day long vision jesus. I found this movie to be enamouring. I haven't really seen movies explore the psychology of sex and this movie is so investing. Tom Cruise is...interesting in this movie to say the least. He always looks dumbfounded but like im ok with it. I really do think Kubrick just has a flare for cinema. He really puts all of his effort into creating a well made film and this is just expertly crafted. The ritual scene is a masterpiece. It looks beautiful, the colour pallette and the fucking score oh my god. The brass vocals are permenantly stuck in my mind now. This movie is also remarkably well paced. I started this movie late at night despite being exhausted and got through an hour when I thought it was like 25 minutes. Side note, I love that Alan Cumming just showed up. I absolutely loved this movie and am going to be thinking about it for a long time.

It was nice seeing darkness surrounded by optimism. The characters were all investing (ms. Wicked witch chainsmoking through the latter half was a mood) and overall, I just loved this.

And with that because im feeling generous again...the TWO WINNERS are...

Congrats!

austino15fffan you will recieve a HIGH placement...

You know what fuck it Voila you get one too <3

And now the BOTTOM 3:

LaCroix - Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - Is this the first John Carpenter film submitted? I think so. I dont know why I think he is amazing. Oh well. This movie is something else lol. It has a really interesting blend of genres that you don't see portrayed often. The action is really good and the visuals are really cool. Kim Cattrall's green eyes in the movie are so cool. A negative but also a positive is the fact that its a white man in the main perspective for like no reason but I do like that hes eseentially the helpless victim alot of the time. Its good irony but what frustrates me is that it could have been like that but not have been told from his perspective yanno? I don't know it takes me out of it. But as I said it's a pretty good action film. It might not my favoruite John Carpenter film but its no where near the bottom. It does have a really special place in his fimography.

stuartlittle16 - Cloud Atlas (2012) - So let me start by saying this movie fits the theme very well but oh my god is it for the wrong reasons. I appreciate you taking a risk but man this movie was just 3 hours too long and the narrative structure was horrendous. I felt immediately disconnected and I put it on as background noise (took me two days to finish the movie). I just didnt care about what was happening because it was hard to know what was happening. I will say that the ambition and scope of this movie is beautiful. There are some great cinematography and effects. I think though the moment that took me completely out of this movie was once scene where the guy who was whipped was eating and the smucking was so loud I cringed and had an anxiety attack. I feel bad trashing it but aince you havent watched it, my personal opinion is to stay away from it

turkeylover - Detention (2011) - Oh wow. This is very much on brand for you damn. I love Spencer Locke by the way. I think you definitely described the movie pretty accurately with also a huge dash of The Breakfast Club but I think this movie is more crazy in terms of its style. It makes sense looking at it when its directed by a music video director (who has made some iconic as hell videos I stan). Anyways, this movie is alot and I wasn't vibing for a while but something clicked and I was like...yeah this is pretty entertaining. Its so stupid that its smart and it just takes a bit of time to get there. I like that the weirdest stuff happens for no reason and alot of aliens. I don't think I would seek this out however. I'd probably reccomend it to people who would like the abnormality of it but its not like a favourite. Aside from the crazy style its a teeny bit forgetable. But never the less its solid.

#turkeylover, you are SAFE

And that leaves our Bottom 2:

#LaCroix
vs.
#stuartlittle16

Unfortunately you are up for elimination. I do wish you luck though and remember, I want your submission by MAIL <3

For the elimination round, I just want a movie that has a shower scene. I don't care for how long, I don't need to see nudity. I just want something with a shower scene...

And I know the obvious choice is Psycho...submit it if you want but you might wanna stay away from it <3
