Our first stop is now complete. Unfortunately, we will need to leave one person in the 2000s while the rest continue on. Becksta20 and I made some short comments on each song. In the first episode, I also mentioned there was an opportunity to score some bonus points. For each song that we had not previously heard before, we awarded one bonus point. You can earn a maximum of two bonus points: 1 point if the song is new to Beck, and 1 point if the song is new to me. Here are the comments:
Galaxies: Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
T: I definitely enjoy this song. That repeating guitar lick at the beginning gives off a dreamlike quality, and I think that really makes the song.
B: I love this song when I’m in a chilled out mood. If I need to be pumped up I find this brings the mood down but I do love it.
Mrkk: Tik Tok - Ke$ha
T: Early Ke$ha teaches us that not every song has to be super serious. It’s ok for songs to just be fun and catchy. That said, Ke$ha songs are not the songs I go to when I just want to listen to a fun song.
B: When this song came out I was in the midst of my party days so it brings back wonderful memories of being at the club dancing all night long!
CarolinaSteele: Home - Three Days Grace
T: Funny, I hated Three Days Grace as a kid. I definitely don’t hate this song now though. I really dig the guitar riff during the verses. A solid reminder of those teen angst days.
B: I have not heard this before so bonus points! It actually reminds me of another song/artist. Thanks for introducing this one!
3pi14159: Over the Head (Cable Car) - The Fray
T: I really like this song and will never not sing along to it. I love the piano in this song. Definitely a staple of the mid-2000s for me.
B: This was a big hit when it came out and I loved it then and still do. I love the lyric ‘I wish you were a stranger I could disengage’!
BBlover96: Peaches & Cream - 112
T: Bald at that dedication. That aside, I’m not a fan of the lead’s voice, but the track slaps.
B: This was nothing like I expected! I’ve never heard this one before either but did enjoy!
Chels052_: Snow (Hey Oh) - Red Hot Chili Peppers
T: RHCP is one of my favorite artists. This is such a great song. It’s but there is genuinely nothing about this song that I don’t like. One of those I could sit and listen to on repeat all day.
B: This is one of my favourite RHCP songs! Chili Peppers were such a staple in my 20’s so good to relive that!
Lukesurvives: Party in the USA - Miley Cyrus
T: My feelings on Tik Tok adequately sum up this song. It’s another fun party song that I don’t personally want to listen to when I want to party and have fun.
B: This song is an anthem for me, it’s my go to when I need to be cheered up!
Valgarfield: Lady Marmalade - Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya and P!nk
T: This song is kind of iconic. Has nothing on Patti and the original, but this is a nice rendition.
B: I freaking loved Moulin Rouge and this song was another staple night out song that I loved to dance to!
FromAWindow: Miss Independent - Kelly Clarkson
T: Bitch. I love me some early Kelly. This isn’t one of my favorites but it’s still definitely a bop, and the track is fire.
B: Kelly seriously nailed American Idol and her music is always so good. This is such a good anthem!
Joshgillespie: Just Dance - Lady Gaga
T: Maybe the real theme of this round is that Tim is no fun. I really like Lady Gaga, and I like this song. But it’s another party song that I don’t find myself going to often. That said, I still enjoy it, and kind of have to stan Gaga, my bday twin.
B: So much energy in this song and it’s totally my style of music! Love it!
Kingjames13: Nothing to Lose - Billy Talent
T: Congrats on being the first to submit a song I didn’t know! In the right mood, I can definitely see myself listening to this. It really embodies that angsty feeling.
B: This reminds me so much of a band I love and I cannot place their name! Love the vibe though!
Cheritaisdelicious: A Man/Me/Then Jim - Rilo Kiley
T: I loved the acoustic sound of this song. It sounds so lovely which is an interesting contrast to how strong the lyrics are. Like that opening hit me like a brick. It was a nice listen overall.
B: This is a bit of a downer song... it’s nicely sung and isn’t what I expected at all. The lyrics are intense!
Vanitysmurf: Valerie - Amy Winehouse
T: Really good song. A good backing band can do wonders for a song, and they killed it. Amy’s voice is so unique, and she’s so good in this song.
B: Love this song! There’s just something about her voice that makes me want to keep listening to her music!
Yawnha: Cha Cha Slide - DJ Casper
T: I - I’m in tears haha. If you enjoy this song, I respect that. I personally have never been a fan of this dance or this song.
B: This song is something my girls have danced to every year at their school dance night, it’s so repetitive and I’m not the biggest fan! I’m saying that, I didn’t know who sang this so bonus half point!
woeisme: Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
T: That riff - iconic and easily the best part of the song.
B: Fun fact, my husband, daughters and I can all play the riff of this song on guitar... it’s so fun!
And the first winner of the season is….
#VanitySmurf! Congratulations! You impressed both Beck and I enough to secure the win. Keep up the good work.
Unfortunately, we need to leave someone behind. And that person is…
#Yawnha. Unfortunately, you have been eliminated. The Cha Cha Slide was just not a strong enough submission to compete. We will be leaving that song in the 2000s, and we will be leaving you there along with it. Thanks so much for playing <3
