Tim's Music Gauntlet: Episode 13

Dec 20, 2020 by tbrown_47
It’s the end of another gauntlet battle. The songs I heard before are all songs I really like, and the songs I hadn’t heard were all pleasant surprises. This was another hard fought battle, but only 3 of you will survive to see another round. Here are the rankings.

1. Touch - Little Mix
2. Wanted Man - The Last Internationale
3. You Know I’m No Good - Amy Winehouse
4. Cosmic Love - Florence and the Machine
5. About a Girl - Nirvana

That means Becksta20 and NewNightmare7 will not survive Tim’s Music Gauntlet. Beck, you’ve been so consistent throughout the game. Had you picked either of your other options for the bass challenge, you probably wouldn’t have been in this spot. About a Girl is actually one of my favorite Nirvana songs, so eliminating it was tough. In the end, I didn’t think the acoustic version outshined the original, and I actually prefer the original version.

NewNightmare, you were my frontrunner in the very beginning because I think our music taste aligns in a lot of ways. This game was a wild ride. You’ve been at the top, at the bottom, and everywhere in between. And you’ve endured several gauntlet battles. Your entry was really good this battle, but it really just came down to me liking the top three songs a bit better.

You were both excellent contestants. Thank you both so much for playing and showing me some good music <3

Remaining contestants, congratulations on making the top 8. We’re reaching a point in the game where the only way to guarantee your safety is to be the best, so continue to bring your A-game. Here’s the next challenge.

ROUND 9: In My Feelings

Since really good music should connect with you and make you feel something, you will need to submit songs correspond to the first four stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, and depression (here’s a link for reference: https://www.psycom.net/depression.central.grief.html ).

Random.org will split you up into two 4-person teams. Each person will submit a song to be judged against a song on the other team (denial vs. denial, anger vs. anger, etc). Win the battle to earn a point for your team. The team with the most points will win (songs will still be given individual scores which will be used as a tiebreaker if needed). It doesn’t matter how your team decides which person posts for each stage, just as long as only one person on each team submits for one of the stages.

With your submission, include which stage you are representing and a short note as to how the song connects with the specific stage. The winning team survives; the losing team will enter the most intense gauntlet battle yet. If you have any questions or if any of this doesn’t make sense, please let me know. Since it’s a team battle, I’ll be pretty flexible on submission times, so you have 24ish hours. Good luck!

EDIT: Your place on the list DOES NOT indicate which stage you must post. For example, just because you are first on the list does not mean you are assigned Denial. All that matters is that one stage is represented by one person on each team. However you work that out amongst your team is up to you all. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Team 1:
stuartlittle16: By the Grace of God - Katy Perry (Depression)
ouijake: Iris - Goo Goo Dolls (Bargaining)
zach3051: Baby Don't Leave Me Along With My Thoughts - Lake Street Dive (Denial)
Rubes: Irreplaceable - Beyonce (Anger)

Team 2:
ILoveLarry: Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridgers (Anger)
FromAWindow: Just the Same - Bruno Major (Bargaining)
cheritaisdelicious: Prague - Damien Rice (Denial)
GrrrImABear: What Now - Rihanna (Depression)

I chose "What Now" by Rihanna for Team 2's "Depression".

I'm not someone that typically has found a lot to love about most of Rihanna's music, but this song was always one that stuck out to me for a few reasons. Beyond it's initial catchyness, there's a lot of depth in the lyrics and in the overall arrangement. The manic and varied emotions described as well as the description of not knowing how to feel or how to describe it really does fit the idea of depression & helplessness. As the song progresses, you feel a lot of unsteadyness as the tone changes which is how the emotions of depression song whenever one becomes overwhelmed and I just overall think this song does sound like how depression can feel.

Team 2 Bargaining Entry

I sang this song all throughout my bargaining phase when I was getting over a breakup, I think this song speaks to the acknowledgment of a better life without someone but the sort of addiction-esque feeling involved with loving someone with their whole being, that there’s too much hope to truly see the broken pieces that make up a relationship. I love this song a lot so I hope you like it or at least connect with it

Depression

This song is honestly so special to me. Life is rough you know and depression freaking sucks. I know this is her dealing with a break up and going through suicidal thoughts but overcomes them. Whenever I’m depressed thinking deep about my future or where my life is at, I always go to this song to find comfort. It’s just a special song that has helped me out in life

Motion Sickness by Phoebe Bridgers - Anger (Team 2)

Although this song might not have the angriest sound to it on a first listen, I love the way the song expresses resentment. Listening to it is like experiencing the singer's processing of that slow-burning resentment. According to Genius: “On ‘Motion Sickness,’ Bridgers sings about how an older man has caused her distress in the form of what she describes as “emotional motion sickness,” explaining how he built her up and broke her heart — eventually leaving her behind.” Bridgers has openly stated that she wrote the song about music producer Ryan Adams, with whom she had a physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive relationship. The anger of the opening line (“I hate you for what you did”) is so striking to me, as is the bravery of the act of putting this song out into the world. To me, this song and anger itself are about looking for someone/something to blame for emotional grief or hurt. I also love this quote from the article you linked, and I think it’s very fitting for this song: “Think of anger as a strength to bind you to reality.”

This song to me is the perfect representation of denial. The fact that we sometimes use people and relationships we have to ignore problems we are facing in our life is definitely a reality that I have faced in my own life. I've used this song in my past to justify unhealthy actions in my life. We can get easily caught up in trying to make ourselves feel better in the moment that we don't take the time to take care of ourselves in the long term

Team 1 - Anger

The lyrics of this song just show the anger lmfaoo like it may not sound very angry but this song just really gives off bad bitch vibes. Even the video shows the anger and pettiness when she takes off the jacket because it’s hers lool.

I'm sorry I got distracted. This is my denial song.

Damien Rice - Prague. Traveling to your ex-lover's wedding, refusing to believe that things are over between the two of you, waiting for her to turn around and come back.
