Really's Music Game II [Challenge I Results]

May 8, 2023 by reallyreally
Thank you all for submitting your songs, it was lots of fun listening through them and discovering some new music. It was interesting to see how you all interpreted the theme as some of you submitted fun club tracks while others sent in depressing lyrical songs.

The following users are safe this round:
Jre777
Mackey
Carriexoxo24xo
oswordo3
Kindred7
Thnksfrthmmrs (you nearly made my top three for this round but there were many strong submissions)

My top three for this round are: Cullenhi , coolKat and humanwebjet1
For this first challenge I have decided to award Cullenhi with the win. I had not heard of the artist or song that he submitted before so I appreciate him for letting me step outside of my comfort zone. Congratulations! After getting cut first last season this was an incredible way to return to my competition.

Now to the sad part, this means the following users are in the: turkeylover , Tommy123 and Maxi1234

Maxi1234 since you took a risk and sent in an artist that isn't very well known I will grant you safety, so you are not in danger of being eliminated this round.

Unfortunately, I will be sending turkeylover home this challenge. Your song choice wasn't bad, it just didn't resonate with me the same that others did. You are welcome to return back in a following season to redeem yourself but as of now your time in this blog game is over. We'll really miss you! This means Tommy123 you are safe for another round.

Reviews:
Maxi1234 ‘Ecstasy’ - This wasn’t for me, I’m sure it’d be fun to hear if you were wasted at a club but I was alone in bed when listening to this. The lyrics got repetitive and I wish they told more of a story about addiction. [7]

oswordo3 ‘Drugs’ - This was a decent choice but I wouldn’t go back to listen to this, although I could see that chorus getting stuck in my head. The instrumental reminded me of ‘Stressed Out’ by Twenty One Pilots. I do appreciate a good bridge that changes things up and this song fulfilled that. [7.5]

Cullenhi ‘Addiction’ - After you got cut first last season, I was hoping you could redeem yourself and you sure did with this pick. It’s a perfect choice for the theme, it's straight-forward and has lyrics that can better help you understand the mind of somebody with a drug addiction. My favorite line is “Spit in the face of the devil/Extinguish the fire from hell and I leave”. [8.5]

coolKat ‘Not An Addict’ - I had a feeling this song was gonna be submitted for this round and I’m more than happy that it was. The track’s strong-suit is its lyrical content with the chorus showcasing the denial that drug-users have in order to try and hide away from the severity of the situation they're in. The lyrics also help describe what it feels like to get high from hard drugs, which is hard for somebody who has never done them to truly understand. [8.5]

turkeylover ‘Influence’ - This song is similar to ‘Ecstasy’, where it’d be fun to listen to at the club but it doesn’t do much for me because I’m not in that situation. It wasn’t offensively bad or anything but I wouldn’t go back to listen to this. [7]

Tommy123 ‘Blame It’ - I honestly did not enjoy listening to this, the autotune got on my nerves and the lyrics were pretty dumb. I know it’s supposed to be fun and not to be taken seriously but I was just waiting for it to be over. [7]

humanwebjet1 ‘How Could You Leave Us’ - This reminds me a lot of Eminem, but I think he does enough to differentiate himself. There’s not as much shock value in NF’s songs and he taps into both sadness and anger. I was interested in listening to the story that was being told in the verses but the chorus almost ruined the song for me. It was too simplistic and the crying sound effect in the background wasn’t pleasant to listen to. [8.5]

Thnksfrthmmrs ‘Dear Alcohol’ - Very solid choice. The lyrics were interesting to follow and it helps educate people on the root of alcohol addictions. He mentions using alcohol as a crutch to help him forget his troubles and to become more confident. I would definitely revisit this track in the future because of the lyrics I mentioned but also due to how catchy the chorus is. [8.5]

Jre777 ‘Dancing with the Devil’ - Another strong choice, my biggest critique would be that her vocals get too screamy at the end. I care more about a good tone or decent lyrics than the highest note a singer can reach. Other than that, the lyrics describe how a relapse can happen, as only a small sip can lead to an overdose or an issue with alcohol poisoning. I respect her for being so vulnerable, I’m sure there’s many celebrities that have issues with drugs but just don’t talk about it. [8]

Kindred7 ‘Untraveled Road’ - This song is interesting because it’s not as clearly about addiction as the other submissions but I can see how it applies. The track could be used as a motivational track to encourage sobriety, with the untraveled road being a drug-free lifestyle. I wouldn’t be as willing to stretch the theme to fit if I didn’t actually enjoy the song. The lead singer’s got a great voice and I respect that you took a risk to submit this because as you mentioned not everybody likes rock music. [8]

Carriexoxo24xo ‘Stay High (Habits)’ - I’ve heard this track many times before but will give it a pass since it fits the theme and I like it so much. [7.5]

Mackey ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ - Same critique as Stay High [7.5]

That's it for this round everybody, your next challenge will be posted in a few minutes so stay awake!

Oh thank goodness yeah I should’ve been more direct but thought it was still a good song which did indirectly fit the theme - I’ll try to be a bit more direct or at least explain my choices in the future <3 I’m glad you enjoyed it though!
