New's Movie Taste S3 - ROUND 2 (RESULTS)

Mar 22, 2022 by NewNightmare7
imageHello! Welcome to the results show for the second week!

So I wanna say that going forward I may be slower than usual as I am starting a job in a couple days as well as reading The Exorcist which I am very invested in. So thats all

Also, while watching Cruel Intentions, I got a fabulous screenshot for everyone to enjoy!

With that, the following contestants are SAFE:

Vixens - Gone Girl (2014) (Rosamund Pike) - I love David Fincher so much! He might be my favourite director. Its always a toss up between some people but he is just consistently great! Which makes me extremely sad that I have yet to see this movie! I always hear that its really good but its also fucked up. Yeah those expectations were met! This movie had me shook! I ended up guessing correctly what happened to Amy but from then on I was like oh damn...oh damn!!!! And just thrown for a loop which I appreciate. I loved Rosamund Pike's performance it is truly psychotic and I was so fascinated by the portrayl. They really throw alot of loops into morality and really neither Amy or Nick are good people. Tyler Perry was also really good which I wasn't expecting him to be! Also Neil Patrick Harris was creepy as hell ew. The score is also really nice and subtle which makes it creepy. The biggest praise I can give this movie is how well directed it is. Fincher is insane behind the camera and he knows how to hold tension and keep you invested. Props to Gillian Flynn though for not only writing the book but also the screenplay. Its masterfully written and executed. While this may not be my favourite of his I can't deny how amazing this movie is.

stuartlittle16 - Dumb & Dumber (1994) (Jim Carrey) - Oh man this movie is a trip. I feel like there were so many jokes and so much going on and for me, it felt 50/50. Some of them were really funny (the parakeet jokes made me cackle so obnoxiously loud) and some didnt really do anything for me and for that its kind of a middle of the road film. I don't dislike it, I actually found it very charming at times but its not anything for me to go crazy over but the one biggest highlight I can give is Jim Carrey. He is phenomenal in this movie. His physical comedy is just out of this world and its like a 1 in a million (got my pun?) person. Truly a delight and while I might prefer his more grounded performances...just damn! He kills it. Thats pretty much where my thoughts were. Quite entertaining but I wouldn't see myself revisit it.

CalebDaBoss - Cruella (2021) (Emma Stone) - I enjoyed this alot more then I thought I was going to. There is alot to enjoy her, particularily Emma Stone's performance. I love that she just chews up the scenery when she takes from of Cruella. I also love that Emma Thompson just looks so unamused like she doesn't wanna be there. Thats iconic! The fashion is also insane and I absolutely love it! Honestly the set design and everything surrounding it is really good! Also, that fashion show scene...yes! I would have to say though this is a pretty uninspired premise (very reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada) but it is an investing one. If anything, my main criticism is the excessive ammount of songs in the movie. Oh my god it felt like 2016 Suicide Squad and I was visibly more frustrated everytime another song came on, especially because the score is actually pretty good! But it just constantly gets overshadowed and it takes me out of the experience. Like there are so many scenes that could have benefited more from the score but it just gets another song that most of the time has nothing to do with the story! Ugh it makes me mad. Thats pretty much all of my criticisms. It is a rather entertaining movie and Emma Stone is just iconic so for that, I am satisfied.

austino15fffan - What Happened to Monday (2017) (Noomi Rapace) - I love these kind of concepts because I can totally see them happening sometime later in the future. This whole movies gives me In Time vibes but like Noomi Rapace playing 7 people is hella Iconic. While none of the characters may stand out that much, just having her portray 7 different people is great and they do distinguish them well enough which I appreciate it. Mostly, this is just an entertaining movie. It had some very tense moments and some surprisingly emotional ones such as Sunday and Friday's deaths. I really enjoyed this movie! You are killing it so far great job!

Congrats on making it to the Final 9! Now onto our TOP 3:

LaCroix - Cruel Intentions (1999) - I absolutely loved this movie! I just found it extremely investing! I would go straight for Sarah Michelle Gellar she is a fucking gem and I love her and everything she has been in. I am also a Buffy fan!!! The rest of the cast though is so good! Selma Blair just has this really weird charm and I found it fascinating and perfect for her character (reminded me of Judy Greer in Jawbreaker). I really liked the internal conflict that Sebastian was having, its a very well told story with some nice character development but all the praise just goes to the cynical Kathryn for being insufferable but mesmerizing. I'm genuinely shook at how much I enjoyed this! Damn!

FromAWindow - Arrival (2016) (Amy Adams) - This is a movie I have wanted to see for a while as I have enjoyed every Denis Villeneuve movie I have seen (which is almost all of them!) This might be one of the most interesting movies I have ever seen. I just haven't seen anything like it before. Communication with aliens in movies are only slightly explored but this just goes for it all and I found it so engaging. It is masterfully directed and written, the design for the crafts and aliens are really cool as is their language. Amy Adams is phenomenal in the role and really connects with the material. I am honestly just astounded. The way it all works out and the concept of language being the key to unlinear time perception was marvellous. I feel like thats all I can say this is just truly another masterpiece from Denis Villeneuve.

Olympia - Frances (1982) (Jessica Lange) - I too have learned about Ms. Lange from American Horror Story and I have always wanted to check out more of her filmography but just haven't gotten around to it. So I was very excited for this movie. God...she is absolutely mesmerizing. I was so enthralled with her performance It felt breathtaking. This movie is just so tragic. To me it just seems like a girl who couldn't be controlled so they took extreme measures and god I absolutely hated her mother what a fucking horrible person. When it got to the institutionalized part of the movie, i was just appalled. Its so sad to see it and Jessica Lange just performs so well. Im so surprised she did not win an Oscar for this movie. Like that genuinely shocked me. I could gush on forever about how great she is in this movie. A negative I have on the film however is despite this being a long movie, the transitioning from some scenes to others felt very jarring as there really wasn't anyway to distinguish the time period, particularily early on in the transitioning of becoming an actor. Thats pretty much it though, this is a really well done movie with a truly knock out performance.

And with that, the winner of round 2 is...

FromAWindow & Olympia!!!!

Yep its a tie. While Olympia had the best performance that matched the challenge, FromAWindow had the best film and for that, I award you both a win! Congrats

LaCroix will recieve a HIGH placement

And with that here is our BOTTOM 3:

CallMeTheGOAT - 21 Bridges (2019) (Chadwick Boseman) - RIP Chadwick. He is such a legend and seemed to be such a pure soul. Im so shook that Keith David is in this movie! His voice is indistinguishable and I always think of Sgt. Foley from Modern Warfare 2! Pop off! This movie is...fine! I feel like its trying to say alot but not saying enough in terms of time and effort. Its a very short movie that could have benefited from a longer runtime to really develop the situation and characters cause all I really know about Chadwick Boseman is that he is a hardass who truly values justice. That being said, the movie is passable. Its got good action and the performances are good! So overall, it has good moments and a message worth developing but its lack of development and generic structure make it a background kind of movie and its fine but in a game with a stacked cast, we'll see if fine is enough.

paul028 - The Heat (2013) (Melissa McCarthy) - Uhm. Its a movie that is made competently well. The performances are solid enough and its not boring! However, like The Other Guys, I just really can't get into it and its almost solely because of Melissa McCarthy's character. I really appreciate that her character never referenced her weight as a joke or others used it against her but oh my god, her character is awful. I really don't find abrasive mean spirited dialogue comedic. Its just a cheap way of trying to gst a joke by saying outrageous stuff and that doesn't work for me. I found Sandra Bullock a much more compelling figure as there is no relying on those kind of jokes to be funny. Her physical comedy I really enjoyed. The plot is also kinda generic and just overall, while not an outrageously bad movie (I can totally see why people would enjoy it), its just not for me.

imprincearthur - Jason Bourne (2016) (Matt Damon) - Uhm so this was...a choice. Honestly I don't really know what you were coming at with this submission as this is no where near Matt Damon's best performance or really the best Bourne movie. Its just painfully average. The action is good yeah, Matt Damon is fine but the story just doesn't have anything to be invested in. I don't know to me this just feels like an uneccessary sequel. I might be sounding very critical but let me stress that I don't hate this movie. It is pretty enjoyable for the most part, but in a game where people are showing phenomenal performances, and your high last week, I expected more so I am a little disappointed.
