New's Movie Taste S3 - FINALE (RESULTS)

4 NewNightmare7, Apr 10, 2022

Welcome to the finale!
This was a season! It had contestants, films were submitted and there is gonna be a winner! In all seriousness, this final 6 was strong af and despite a lackluster first half from the latter 6 of the competition, you all brought it and to the final 3, you all hella slayed!
With that, here are the final critiques:
LaCroix - Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) - Aw this movie has some great themes! As someone who comes from a very broken home/family I related very much to the overall film. Robin Williams is just a delight. Such a genuinely funny and talented soul that was taken from us far too soon. It genuinely hurts me reading stuff about him knowing how sweet of a person he was. I'm surprised you consider this a guilty pleasure movie because I would love this movie loud and proudly. Sure there are some overall things that havent aged well such as the crossdressing and gay stereotypes of the sibling, but thats not the message to the overall story. That wasn't what I'm personally taking away from it. This is just a fun and heartwarming movie about family done right (suck it Fast and Furious movies). You have seriously had a great run this season! While sticking primarily to the 90's nostalgia of film, it really captured your taste and what you personally enjoy and I was along for the ride! Amazing job!
Olympia - Dodsworth (1936) - I think out of 3 seasons, this is the 2nd Classic Hollywood film submitted. You are very much right, I'm unfortunately not that well versed in classic hollywood (except for Universal Monster movies) but I have always at least wanted to watch more. I don't know if it fits my taste but I can always appreciate the art. This is a very impactful movie. It resonated alot with me. Seeing people wanna live completely different lives yet still try to stay together is very sad. Ruth Chatterton is phenomenal. She really sells her role of being tired with her lifestyle. Walter Huston is also great and Im happy there was at least some form of a happy ending regarding love. I have adored your journey. There was not one film you have submitted this season that I have yet to see and I have enjoyed them all! I'm very happy you have gotten to expand my taste and for that I thank you. Congrats on your performance this season it was impecable!
paul028 - The Godfather (1972) - Cheeky bastard. How dare you submit a 3 hour movie. I had to watch this in 2 different sittings cause I didn't have the time to get through it. That being said, I love me some mobster movies. Like I said for Goodfellas last season, I grew up playing Grand Theft Auto IV which is heavily inspired by this film in particular and I will always have a soft spot for them. Even with that soft spot however, this is just a fucking masterpiece. I absolutely love this movie. Its probably somewhere in my top whatever because its just phenomenal. The story, the characters, the raw tension, the brutality, its just..

New's Movie Taste S3 - ROUND 2 (RESULTS)

2 NewNightmare7, Mar 22, 2022

Hello! Welcome to the results show for the second week!
So I wanna say that going forward I may be slower than usual as I am starting a job in a couple days as well as reading The Exorcist which I am very invested in. So thats all
Also, while watching Cruel Intentions, I got a fabulous screenshot for everyone to enjoy!
With that, the following contestants are SAFE:
Vixens - Gone Girl (2014) (Rosamund Pike) - I love David Fincher so much! He might be my favourite director. Its always a toss up between some people but he is just consistently great! Which makes me extremely sad that I have yet to see this movie! I always hear that its really good but its also fucked up. Yeah those expectations were met! This movie had me shook! I ended up guessing correctly what happened to Amy but from then on I was like oh damn...oh damn!!!! And just thrown for a loop which I appreciate. I loved Rosamund Pike's performance it is truly psychotic and I was so fascinated by the portrayl. They really throw alot of loops into morality and really neither Amy or Nick are good people. Tyler Perry was also really good which I wasn't expecting him to be! Also Neil Patrick Harris was creepy as hell ew. The score is also really nice and subtle which makes it creepy. The biggest praise I can give this movie is how well directed it is. Fincher is insane behind the camera and he knows how to hold tension and keep you invested. Props to Gillian Flynn though for not only writing the book but also the screenplay. Its masterfully written and executed. While this may not be my favourite of his I can't deny how amazing this movie is.
stuartlittle16 - Dumb & Dumber (1994) (Jim Carrey) - Oh man this movie is a trip. I feel like there were so many jokes and so much going on and for me, it felt 50/50. Some of them were really funny (the parakeet jokes made me cackle so obnoxiously loud) and some didnt really do anything for me and for that its kind of a middle of the road film. I don't dislike it, I actually found it very charming at times but its not anything for me to go crazy over but the one biggest highlight I can give is Jim Carrey. He is phenomenal in this movie. His physical comedy is just out of this world and its like a 1 in a million (got my pun?) person. Truly a delight and while I might prefer his more grounded performances...just damn! He kills it. Thats pretty much where my thoughts were. Quite entertaining but I wouldn't see myself revisit it.
CalebDaBoss - Cruella (2021) (Emma Stone) - I enjoyed this alot more then I thought I was going to. There is alot to enjoy her, particularily Emma Stone's performance. I love that she just chews up the scenery when she takes from of Cruella. I also love that Emma Thompson just looks so unamused like she doesn't wanna be there. Thats iconic! The fashion is also insane and I absolutely love it! Honestly the set design and everything surrounding it is really good! Also,..

New's Movie Taste S3 - ROUND 1 (RESULTS)

4 NewNightmare7, Mar 17, 2022

Welcome to the first results show of the season! My name is BURKE according to Voila which I stan so yeah!
Anyways, we have two situations to get past before we begin:
gumball221520 did not submit a film and is therefore disqualified
#Volleyball1 was exposed as a multi and subsequently banned, to which they are disqualified as well. They did submit a film however and I chose not to view it or accept it
That means Sweeney Todd (2007) is still available to use to anyone that wishes to use it.
With that, everyone that submitted a film is SAFE! No Low placements given this round but we will have a top 3. So with that, here are the critiques:
stuartlittle16 - Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) (Swashbuckler) - Oh man thanks to CarolinaSteele last season, I ended up watching the trilogy and man do I love this first movie. It is so entertaining and I wasn't expecting it to be. Stuff like this has never enticed me but man when you got the right talent and acting, you can do so much and Gore Verninski does so much to great affect. Johnny Depp acting half gay, half drunk and crazy is the funniest thing and I can just watch that for hours. Keira Knightly and Orlando Bloom have alot to do as well and I found it compelling. Geoffery Rush is a great complex villain and the overall set pieces and cinematography is just gorgeous! Not to mention that score. Ugh I love this movie.
imprincearthur - The Conjuring (2013) (Supernatural) - So I will never hold this movie for fault but oh my god the era this created is so awful jesus. I absolutely love this movie though. There is something about James Wan and his directing style that I will always find investing. He is able to take simple concepts and elevate them just by craftsmanship. Vera Farminga is a fucking gem and needs to be in more stuff cause she is just iconic and to me is the heart of this movie. Patrick Wilson is great too but god her facial acting is phenomenal. The scares are impactful too. Jump Scares done right can be very effective and it works for me. Even on a rewatch the never ending use of tension even with Jump Scares is really good. The hide & clap (or hide the clap I can't remember) as well as the hair pulling and the dresser scare are just so good. Overall, one of James Wan's finest films in his filmography and despite me not liking the influence this movie had as I find alot of imitators awful, this one is unmatched so pop off!
FromAWindow - Isn't It Romantic (2019) (Rom-Com) - To answer your question. Satire or parody is definitely a subgenre but I kept it Rom-Com as thats the central idea despite it being made fun of. This movie surprised me and I found it extremely entertaining! Rebel Wilson has great comedic timing here it is so much fun. Her just calling shit out made me laugh obnoxiously loud when it probably shouldn't have. Do people not like..
