New's Movie Taste - ROUND 3 (RESULTS)

Nov 21, 2021 by NewNightmare7
Hi. Bonjour. This is my 2nd attempt at this blog so prayers 馃檹

A phenomenal round and im very crushed to have to eliminate someone...never the less, it has to be done :(

The following people are SAFE:

tyleror - Hush (2016) (Home Invasion) - Mike Flannagan is my favourite horror director in modern cinema because the man just gets it. He always has an impecable vision that works and it is no different here. Hush is harsh, tense and so well contained. I truly believe that dude is straight up psychotic and he thrives off it. Its terrifying and I can't even imagine how it would feel to be deaf and also in this situation. I love home invasion movies because they have a great sense of realism to it. With every Mike Flannagan movie, its shot well, acted well and has good scares so nice job.

Jaxon - Lights Out (2016) (Paranormal) - What a cool concept! This movie surprised me with how much it really focused on the characters. I was more invested i  their dynamic than I was in the scares, which were really well done as well. The whole blacklight finale was super tense and I really enjoyed it. I also really liked how the boyfriend character wasn't the stereotypical douchebag, he genuinely cared and that is alot of respect. Paranormal stuff normally isn't my go to genre but this is a stand out!

nateclove - Suspiria (1977) (Gialo) - I'm actually very disappointed in myself because I haven't seen this movie before the competition despite it being on my watchlist for like 8 years. That wait was worth it though as this movie is stellar. I have no clue if I watched the movie correctly or not as it was in english and I googled my heart out to figure this out (I know it was dubbed) and the dubbing is done really well for the most part. The movie also looks outstanding. The use of colour (which is always a common praise I see) really pops out which I love. The cinematography also arguably outdoes every other movie submitted this round which says alot as 70's movies don't tend to look amazing. The gore is great particularily in the opening that had my mouth drop. There is so much to appreciate here and while it might not be my favourite of this round, it warrants all the praise it gets. It is truly a classic

Symmetry888 - Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) (Sci-Fi) - Oh this movie was creepy! The visuals were fucking bizarre! The pods coming out of the plant thing was so fucked! This movie was very enjoyable. I really liked the cast and the performances and of course, the weird shit in it. The end (while I did know it) was still creepy as hell, especially with the way Donald Sutherland looks. Ew. Anyways, this movie is a classic and really well done. I think in modern standings it has a but of pacing iasues but I can overlook it as that is a common thing of older films. It doesn't bother me.

Becksta20 - I Am Legend (2007) (Zombies) - I was definitely not expecting this movie to pop up but I like that. I had expectations and people are defying them so go you guys. This movie brings alot of emotional weight to it and its all because of Will Smith. The dude carrys this movie on his shoulders and has astounding acting. The dog is great and always gets me in my feels and the action is really well done. A couple misfires such as the CGI not aging well and the ending being underwhelming, but it doesn't take away from how good the movie overall is.

Congrats on making it to Week 4! Now onto our TOP 3:

oswordo3 - Cloverfield (2008) (Found Footage) - This movie is phenomenal. It is short, sweet and does not waste a single moment. The subway scene alone merrits the whole movie praise. Lizzy Caplan is the clear shine of the movie (such a shame to her character omg). Despite being a found footage movie, it looks really good and the monster looks amazing. Im not that big on found footage but this might be my favourite. It just works from the marketing to the whole movie im on board the whole way through.

turkeylover - The Descent (2005) (Creature Feature) - I have to agree and say this is one of the best horror movies ever made. The set-up, the tension building that never lets go once it starts. The performances and an iconic all female cast. This movie has it all and more. The gore is great, the use of red and green colours stand out and its shot beautifully. I love this movie so much it is without a doubt one of my favourite horror movies.

PennyTrationStan - Black Christmas (1974) (Slasher) - I am not a christmas guy. I don't like the movies/music any of it. It has never appealed to me and I fucking loved this movie! I had the pleasure of checking this out with my friend (who is not a christmas fan) last year and we both found this genuinely creepy. The way some 70's movies have the creepiest atmosphere is something I adore. Olivia Hussey is such a pleasure and Margo Kidder's death scene (spoilers but this is an almost 50 year old movie so suck it) is so iconic and works so well. The ending is also very creepy and I love how it leaves you guessing. This is definitely my second favourite christmas movie and is now a yearly watch around these times.

And the winner of round 3 is....

turkeylover...and... PennyTrationStan! I couldn't choose between the two so you can both win! Congrats!

And now onto our bottom 2 (which I don't feel correct about it but I gotta roll with it):

Demgirl6 - Session 9 (2001) (Psychological) - Hmm I don't really know how to feel about this movie. I guess the best way to describe it would be disorienting, for both good and bad. To start positively, the movie has great suspense and tension. I felt gross kind of watching it because the setting itself is just so uncomfortable. I also like the set-up with this crew, its not a traditional horror movie set up which I appreciate. As for some negatives, the choice to film on a lower frame rate (low budget or not) is an odd choice because it gives the movie a student film look to it which is weird because there are some really beautiful shots but when there isn't, its offputting. I also felt underwhelmed with the way the story plays out because while it is cool to have these Session tapes play out as it goes, it has no major impact to rhe story and to name your movie and base it around it felt like I was clickbaited. It also doesn't help that the character of Mike is the one investigating the tapes and his arc has no conclusion. I think overall, I can enjoy it for what it's worth and appreciate what went into it, but I wouldn't revisit it which is a shame cause I love psychological movies.

tbrown_47 - The Green Inferno (2013) (Body Horror) - I was originally gonna argue this as not body horror but then I thought about it more and it definitely is. I was more expecting (well hoping) someone would choose a David Cronenberg route but this is for sure entertaining. Its got some bizarre scenes especially with its cinematography. Plus, I love Lorenza Izzo. She is so pretty and works this movie out. Go her. Also when I first watched it, I was hella shock about Daryl Sabara being in it and seeing his dick lmao. I do gotta say the characters in this movie are very dull and some of the pacing reallt slows. This movie doesn't reach out entirely to me personally especially in comparison to other Eli Roth movies. I don't know why I couldn't get into it as much. Probably the characters, they are pretty underwhelming but I can't deny this movie does it's job well for the most part.

And the eliminated contestant is...

Demgirl6. Im sorry hun :( you started very strong and I believe could have gone very far but in a stacked round, it fell short. Thank you so much for playing <3

And now we move onto Round 4, which will be posted within the next hour so stay tuned!
