Nano’s Movie Taste: Round 4 Mar 20, 2022
https://i.imgur.com/yl9zSZU.gif

We’re now 4 rounds in... only 8 of you are left.

Things are going to get even tougher, especially with the 2 powers still in play... as well as the other 2 powers that have yet to be awarded.

But wait... I haven’t told you what Michael’s power is have I? Well, his power is...

...

...

...

...

...

https://c.tenor.com/OyFIBE8L59AAAAAC/sequel-month-nostalgia-critic.gif

The SEQUEL Power!

Do you ever instantly regret the film that you’ve submitted and are not sure whether I’ll like it? I know I’ve felt that way before in movie taste games.

That’s why this power is so great. If you ever lack confidence in your submission, you can use this power to submit another film! When you use this power, your first submission will stay intact, but you will also be able to submit a second movie. I will then watch both movies you submitted and accept the movie that ranks higher as your final ranking for the episode. You will be able to use this power until Round 7.

So Michael, use this power wisely!

And Braden, remember that you still have your Rerun Power!

...

...

...

...

...

So... now it’s time to submit another film.

What’s this round’s theme, you ask? Let’s see.

For this round, I’d like you to submit a film that heavily uses puppets throughout its runtime. It doesn’t have to be ENTIRELY puppets... there can be live action characters in the film too. But I should be able to see a lot of puppet work throughout.

Or if you want you CAN submit a film that is entirely puppet work! Whatever you wanna do, as long as there is a good use of puppeteering throughout the whole movie.

That’s basically the only requirement! With that, please remember to check that your submission is available on one of these platforms:

Netflix
Hulu
Disney+
HBO Max
Paramount+
Peacock
Tubi
PlutoTV
YouTube (in the “Free to Watch” playlist. They should say “Free” or “Free with Ads”, and should be posted by YouTube itself. No pirated videos!)

There could be others I didn’t mention, so if you have a film that can only be watched on a platform not on the list, don’t be afraid to ask whether I have access to it!

I’ll leave you all to brainstorm what you want to submit, as well as whether you want to use your powers if you happen to have one.

You have until this blog expires to submit. Good luck!

I asked you to submit a horror film that didn’t have any sequels, prequels, reboots or any film in the same universe... and then you all did something odd!

Every single one of you submitted a horror film I had never seen before! Not a single one of the submissions had been previously watched by me at any point... isn’t that interesting?

So... here’s what I thought about each submission.

...

...

...

...

...

Jeffrey’s Submission ( LaCroix):

Howl (2015)

Review: This was an interesting take on the werewolf genre. I can always appreciate a good slasher film. This movie did well when it came to its kills and monster designs. Although, I feel like its overall execution could’ve been better. Plus I feel like it could’ve been written a little better... some of the death scenes were really frustrating to watch, and the ending wasn’t something to be desired. Overall, this movie wasn’t really bad... but I wouldn’t say it was great either. It was mostly just an average horror movie... not the worst I’ve seen by any means, but not the best either. It was a fun watch though!

Meli’s Submission ( melissasinclair29):

The Feast (2021)

Review: What the... what the fuck did I just watch??? I’m literally so confused by this movie. I think it’s supposed to be more art than it is entertainment... but the point of this game was for me to be entertained! I wanted to watch fun movies, both good and bad, submitted by fellow Tengagers for the purposes of entertainment. I believe this movie has a hidden meaning or interpretation, but it isn’t one I’m able to make out. I don’t like movies that are hard to figure out... which is a shame because given the movie’s buildup, I was expecting something dark and twisted, but I thought I’d be able to make a LITTLE sense out of it! This was... I don’t really know. Maybe you can explain to me what it all means in my PMs or something, but for now I’m just left with more questions than answers... and I don’t like it at all.

Ryan’s Submission ( imprincearthur):

Lights Out (2016)

Review: I had heard of this movie as well as the short film that inspired it... but I never watched either or knew what they were even about, other than a woman appearing when the lights were turned off. After watching it, I gotta say... it wasn’t half bad! Not the best horror movie I’ve seen, but it’s still a solid film! At first I didn’t really care for the final girl protagonist and her boyfriend, but they both grew on me as the film went on. The scares throughout the movie were effective and well executed, and while I feel the dialogue could’ve been more polished in a few places, the horror story in the film was written well! Overall, I liked this film! While I don’t believe I have a desire to rewatch it, it’s definitely a solid submission. Great choice!

Michael’s Submission ( stuartlittle16):

It Follows (2014)

Review: So... I had heard a lot about this film prior to this game, and I knew all about the STD monster and the rules of how its target is passed on... but I don’t believe I ever watched this film for myself. I knew when to expect some of the scares in this film... but after officially watching it, there were still some disturbing images that I didn’t know to expect, and that made the movie a little better for me! I gotta say... it was actually pretty good! It did leave me with a few questions... but sometimes it’s okay for things in a movie to be left ambiguous as long as it doesn’t leave the audience completely confused about what they watched. I understand that this was a very low budget movie... but some of the shooting techniques were a little weird to me. But hey, there’s nothing bad about being a little weird! Overall, this was a pretty good horror movie with an original terrifying concept! I’m kinda surprised it didn’t get a sequel to be honest...

Gumball’s Submission ( gumball221520):

The Silence (2019)

Review: So... I had never seen this film before, nor did I have any interest in seeing it. When I first saw the trailer, I remember thinking it looked like a complete ripoff of A Quiet Place. I know it’s based off of a novel that was published before A Quiet Place now, but... I still think the movie copied a few things from that movie, such as the monster designs. Seriously... the faces and teeth look extremely similar. Plus, when I doubled checked that there was no sequel in production for the requirements of the game, I searched “The Silence 2”... and the first things that came up were A Quiet Place 2! Wow... as for the movie itself, I guess it had a few gruesome scenes that I enjoyed... but the plot was kind of all over the place, and I don’t think the writing was up to par. I don’t like the way the family just gets up and leaves in the middle of the night after hearing about the monsters... and the ending left me unsatisfied. Plus, I hate how they just wrote in a human villain with 30 minutes left in the movie just to provide an extra conflict. I had low expectations going into it, and I admit it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting it to be... but there’s still a lot of issues I just can’t overlook, unfortunately.

Juniper’s Submission ( NewNightmare7):

The Faculty (1998)

Review: So... I can see that a lot of people seem to love this movie. However, I sadly cannot say the same. I honestly didn’t enjoy this at all... it really wasn’t scary, nor was it written decently. It felt less like a horror movie and more like a high school TV movie... like the kinds you would usually see on the Disney Channel. It also felt like they turned some of the main characters into aliens at VERY random times, some of which didn’t even make sense. Plus... the characters literally had no way of knowing there was a “queen bee” of the aliens, and that killing this queen bee would kill all the aliens... but they all just assumed this was the case, and of course they ended up being right. I also wanna add how stupid it was that their weakness was... cocaine? What? I guess I can see why people like it if they watched this movie as kids... but this was my first time watching it, and I unfortunately was not impressed at all.

Montérégie’s Submission ( Crayadian):

The Empty Man (2020)

Review: So... this movie had a strong start. It’s opening was 20 minutes long, but I still enjoyed it and was excited to watch the rest of the movie. The middle of it was kinda boring, but I still did find some dark and fun scenes to enjoy. I was prepared to give this film a high ranking... right up until the last 20 minutes of the movie. That’s when the huge plot twist of the film came into play. But to me... it literally didn’t make any sense. I mean... what the fuck was that ending? It left me so confused... and extremely disappointed. Like... my mind is still broken. It feels like everything I just watched was a lie and it didn’t ever mean anything. All because of that huge bullshit plot twist. So yeah... most of the movie was good except for that horrible ending. I honestly don’t know how I’m gonna rank this movie now... but oddly, I still believe this movie was better than half of the films I’ve seen for this round. Ugh it literally would’ve easily claimed the top spot if it hadn’t been for that ending, idk what I’m gonna do now. This movie is acting as a huge wildcard.

Braden’s Submission ( FromAWindow)

Freaky (2020)

Review: I had heard so much about this film prior to this game. After officially watching it, I gotta say it was pretty entertaining. It reminds me so much of the Fear Street movies (which I have seen all 3 of them), and I know this came out before those movies... so I think maybe those films took some inspiration from this film. I can always appreciate a good horror comedy, and this one was done pretty well. I love it when actors play more than one personality in a film. Overall, this is a good watch for a family horror movie night (If that’s even a thing), and I enjoyed it!

Nevra’s Submission ( turkeylover):

Curtains (1983)

Review: So... I usually don’t watch 80’s horror movies unless they’re cult classics such as Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street (which obviously weren’t options for this round). I found this film really hard to follow, and the kills were really tame... and when there wasn’t killing, it was just... unnecessary dialogue and scenery. Such as that scene where the second victim ice skates for a whole 2 minutes before finally being stalked by the killer... I feel like they just put that scene there to extend the movie’s runtime. Overall, this film is fine for an 80’s murder mystery story... but it isn’t really much of a horror film.
...

...

...

...

...

I’ve been going back and fourth with myself over these rankings. Some of them were really hard to rank... but I believe I’ve settled on a final list.

So let’s find out who’s going to be receiving the next power.

Congratulations to Michael, Montérégie and Braden for being the Top 3 of this round! If I’m being honest... this round’s submitted films didn’t really impress me as much as I hoped they would. But your films were the most memorable in my opinion. It was extremely tricky picking out the best film of the round, but I believe I’ve settled on a decision.

It Follows (2014)

CONGRATULATIONS MICHAEL! Your film was my favorite for this round! A part of me really wanted to give it to the Empty Man, but I just couldn’t look past that ending. While I did find some of its filming techniques a little odd, It Follows is a truly terrifying film that does so much with such a small budget. It is praised by both critics and average movie-goers alike, and therefore I believe it is more than deserving of the the top spot!

This means Michael will be receiving a special power!

Now that we’ve seen the best scary films of the round... let’s take a look at the worst.

Curtains (1983) turkeylover

I’m so sorry, but Meli, Juniper and Nevra are the bottom 3 of this round. I just didn’t like any of your films at all. This elimination is hard considering you’ve all done decent in past rounds, but unfortunately I do have to eliminate one of you for submitting the worst film of the round.

The Faculty (1998)

I’m so sorry to say that this was my least favorite film of the round. The reason I view this as the worst is because I just can’t see this as a horror movie. Maybe a cheap thriller movie, but I really don’t see the horror... especially when everything just suddenly turns back to normal at the end of the film. The whole film just had a goofy high school TV drama vibe... and since the main theme of this round was horror, I just couldn’t get into it.

Unfortunately, this means the person getting eliminated is...

Juniper ( NewNightmare7) 😭

Ugh this pains me so much to see you go from the very top to the very bottom... but I literally hated the Faculty. You posted some pretty good films before this round and I had confidence that you had the ability to advance very far in this game... but unfortunately this round got the best of you. I’m so sorry things ended this way.

Favorite Film from the Season:

Finding Nemo (2003)

And since Juniper never used his Privacy Power, it unfortunately means the Power will go to waste.

Unless of course I were to inact a round for eliminated players to return...

...

...

...

...

...

So there you have it.

Ugh, that elimination had me emotional for some reason...

I’ll post the next round either when I wake up or when Michael picks his power, whichever comes last.

Here were the official rankings:

1. It Follows
2. The Empty Man
3. Freaky
4. Lights Out
5. Howl
6. The Silence
7. The Feast
8. Curtains
9. The Faculty
