imageCHRIS DAUGHERTY - SURVIVOR: VANUATU

I'm not sure what the general consensus is on Chris here, but what matters to me is that I placed him as high as I logistically could on this list without upheaving my favourite contestants of each franchise. So yes, to all who haven't been paying attention, Sandra "The Queen" Diaz-Twine is my favourite Survivor contestant of all time, and BJ & Tyler, aka "The Hippies" are my favourite Amazing Race team of all time. But Chris got as far as he could possibly go in this ranking, which is a testament to how damn awesome Chris Daugherty is.

Chris's story to grab the win is easily the Top 2 best winner stories of all time. He's one of the funniest Survivors of all time. He's one of the best confessionalists of all time ("YOU QUESTION A WOMAN'S CHARACTER, SHE'LL /SNAP YOUR NECK/!" < 3). And he's easily one of the most compelling characters of all time, and easy Top 3 placement on this list.

I was engaged with every moment Chris was on screen, from him screwing up the immunity challenge in the premiere to him letting out an F-Bomb once he won the game at the finale. He's the most expressive person of the season probably ahead of just Eliza and JP. Every time he spoke was just captivating. I wanted to hear more out of this guy.

I haven't gotten into his story yet, so I will - Chris was part of the majority alliance on the gender-divided season, and it became clear from the start this guy, as long as he didn't get voted out first, was going to be someone to watch. For example, he'd like to let you know after single-handedly losing your tribe immunity, that if he had wings, he'd be able to cross the balance beam. He was a little low-key until around the merge, but he always had some sort of awesome confessional to add in with some awesome descriptors or just something awesome just for the sake of it, because this guy was a guy worth showing.

He, using Sarge as a figurehead, was calling the shots all throughout the pre-merge. It was his word that sent JP home, that sent Brady home, that sent John K home, and he was all set at the merge, even with one of his old alliance mates having eliminated himself over on Yasur (because of being an effing moron - god dammit Bubba).

They thought they had Twila and Julie locked up and ready to take on Scout/Eliza/Ami/Leanne. However, Julie was just using them - she jumped ship on them, forcing Twila to jump ship to avoid tying the vote and ostracizing herself from her tribe. Chris was stuck on the bad end of a Pagonging thanks to Julie and Twila jumping ship on him, Sarge, Rory and Chad. And thanks to this, and only 3/4 of them being on the jury and therefor irrelevant, the women could treat them like crap. They could withhold food from them, laugh in their faces, and vote them out because who cares?

But the seeds were sewing on Yasur thanks to Scout knowing she was on the bottom of the tribe. She was trying to form a coup on the other women, but her attempts were thwarted when she was ratted out. But at the Final 7, with only Chris left, she had enough. When Ami won immunity and Chris, then Eliza, was set to go home, she confirmed her doubts that she and Twila were never making the Final 3 with Ami. So she did what any good person who has seen Marquesas does and she got Twila, Chris, and then Eliza to vote out Leanne, shifting the tide of the game towards the new alliance of four.  And without Chris, it wouldn't have happened. Chris was no longer the dead man walking he was after he lost the F7 immunity challenge - he was now a power player, with two women who needed him to make the finals, and now with the axe hanging over the head of the women who wanted him gone.

Leanne left, then Ami left after her, and now he was stuck in between two alliances. Twila and Scout weren't going to vote each other out, and Eliza and Julie weren't going to vote each other out. Chris promised to Julie that she was safe and voted her out on Day 36. And there was no strategic value to this - he just wanted revenge. Because all of Chris's story up until this point had been working towards the revenge story - he was at their mercy before, but now he had the power and was calling the shots. He made the same promise to Eliza and voted her out as well. And then he handily won the Final Immunity Challenge against the two remaining women, Twila and Scout, and voted out Scout, being the bigger jury threat who was his only competition on the jury.

And this is where Chris's major skill comes into play - his bullshitting. See, Chris isn't just a great character, a fantastic confessionalist and the recipient of one of Survivor's many great power shifts. He's also the holder of the greatest Final Tribal Council performance in Survivor history. He sewed again so much bullshit, telling every single finalist what they needed or wanted to hear in order to get their jury vote. He was kissing so much ass on that jury his lips are still to this day probably still wedged in Ami's sphincter.

And. It. Was. GLORIOUS.

Never has a story of a season felt more complete than when Chris Daugherty won Vanuatu. A season set up for the women to be out for blood only for a possibly misogynistic guy who sounds like Bill Paxton in a red wifebeater to come in, make each woman look like a complete idiot on national television, and steal a win that he so righteously deserved after everything he went through on his season. He fought hard, he worked hard, and he did almost more than most could ever dream to have done on one season alone for that win, and his win just makes Vanuatu so much better. It defines the season.

I love Vanuatu. I love the cast. I love Chris Daugherty most of all, because he's my favourite non-Sandra Survivor winner of all time.

imageRICHARD HATCH - SURVIVOR: BORNEO

SHOCKING ELIMINATION OF THE CENTURY! Sorry to anyone who wanted him Top 3, 2, or 1, or to anyone who wanted a Survivor Top 3 (sorry zimdelinvasor :( ) but this is as far as he was going to make it in this ranking. It's really just splitting hairs for me at this point since I really do well and truly love everyone who's up this high (and I have been since at least Number 7), but unfortunately, Richard is a victim of personal preference. :(

So it's not shock as to why this guy is up this high - he invented modern-day Survivor. He was the cocky Machiavellian nudist who was one of television's most notorious braggarts who ended up proving his worth by going on to win. Much like Ethan and Tina, I haven't seen all of Borneo in a while so I can't rave at length about how much I love Richard, but I do love him as a winner and as a character as much as his ranking indicates. He is a legend, a true badass and will remain in my Top 3 even if Jesus himself came and won Survivor.

Watching him play and adapt to this game with only unwritten rules where he smashed them all up and wrote his own rules was truly a sight to behold. He truly maximized his chances of winning the game and proved that Survivor was a game that only the smartest and most cunning of personalities can win. Not only that, we really got to know him as a character as well, which is unheard of these days unless you're the fan favourite or a soon-to-be-returning player.

Plus, he brought the perception of gay people in media forward about 50 years or so. This guy proved that gays do not have to be stereotypical, being gay can just be a facet of your personality and not your entire personality.

This may be a pretty underwhelming writeup for someone who is so awesome, but I'm having a bit of writers block and I don't really have anything more to say about Richard that hasn't been written in essays and by every psychologist on the face of the earth who was alive in 2000. The guy is an awesome strategist, an awesome character, and an awesome symbol for Survivor.

The Most Horrific Moment in Big Brother US for me Jun 2, 2013
Wasn't when Shelly recieved death threats for daring to betray JeJo.

Wasn't when Joshuah Whelch told Amanda to go hang herself like her father.

Wasn't when the producers rigged Big Brother 13 to have Rachel win.

It was when I found out that there were people out there who all voted for Erika to appear on Big Brother All-Stars.

WINNER #5 - ZACH & FLO (THE AMAZING RACE) May 29, 2013
imageThe Amazing Race 3 is to The Amazing Race as Marquesas is to Survivor. They were landmark seasons that established everything that could be great about the show, but has somewhat of a bad reputation nowadays because of the lasting impact. Marquesas had Boston Rob. The Amazing Race had Zach and Flo, who without BJ & Tyler, would be my favourite Amazing Race winners ever.

On the surface, they were your average, happy-go-lucky team of friends. Zach was a nice guy who wanted to see if anything more could happen between him and Flo. I think they're friends to this day still, even if they never ended up together. They both fit in nicely amongst the rest of the cast. However, there was one thing that lifted the team high above the rest of the cast.

Flo was a complete and utter psychopath.

She wasn't initially so bad in the first few legs. She complained a bit, but who doesn't? However, once they got to Portugal, Flo flipped out at every little thing that came her way. She forced her partner to cater to her every whim. She was breaking down every step of the way and unlike other teams, refused to do anything outside her comfort zone. She broke down in Portugal, Morocco, Switzerland, Singapore, Thailand, and some other countries I can't even name. There wasn't a time Flo was enjoying herself on the race, because she was having a nervous breakdown every step of the way.

And. It. Was. GLORIOUS.

Everything Flo did was on an entirely new level. There'd been bickering before, there'd been "Oh I don't think I can do this" before, but never to Flo's level. Nobody could have matched Flo in those initial few seasons, because Flo was unique. She was a normal, everyday woman who seemed to have no idea about the very real stresses the race was going to put her under, and completely and utterly caved under the pressure.

There was also her partner, Zach. Zach is, without a doubt, the strongest racer of all time probably next to Eric Sanchez. He did everything by himself, he navigated everywhere, he drove everywhere, and even did most of the tasks him and Flo were meant to do together by himself. He was unflappable in the face of Flo's constant breakdowns and inability to do anything without being dragged there, and even with Flo ending up flirting (and after the race), dating another racer. He never fought with her, he never yelled with her, he just bucked up and did what he needed to do to win the race. He's probably one of the nicest guys ever, and there's a lot of people who just wished he would have gotten the entire million.

This is a difficult team to place because on one hand, they're legendary. They're epic. They stand head and shoulders above any imitators or people who try to recreate them (Hi Rachel Reilly, red-headed tryhard) and they'll never be matched. On the other hand, the two teams they were racing with in the Final 3 who made it with them were so legendary on their own merits. Ken & Gerard remain the single funniest team to ever compete in the race, unmatched even to this day. And Teri & Ian are just the most epic older team to ever run the race, because they evolved as a team in both character and skill. Plus, Ian, a Vietnam veteran, returning to Vietnam after so long, was just one of the most memorable episodes in the show's history. After spending the entire season as a grump who yelled at his wife, Vietnam was epic for him because of how much his conflicts and character were showcased.

But I think it's better off that, despite me liking them just a little bit more, that Season 3 deserved Zach & Flo as winners. The most useless partner in the show's history getting rewarded with a win she arguably never deserved in the first place after being dragged through the entire race by the strongest racer of all time was just a fitting end to one of, if not the, best seasons of all time.
