imageI love Nicaragua. Nicaragua was the last fun season of Survivor they ever did and at the rate the show is going it has a good chance at being the last ever fun season Survivor ever did. The editing could have been a bit better, but it's easily the best A+ almost flawless season since China. A lot of it had to do with the characters. In fact, what brings it up so high that the best damn character in several seasons actually won.

Like how much I love Nicaragua, it also extends to my love of Jud aka Fabio. I didn't even remember there was a guy called Fabio who did romance covers and spokesperson'd for margerine until this guy being called Fabio reminded me. From episode one, minute one, this guy stood out as easily the most likeable, funny and all-around amazing guy to be around in the cast, with Marty being my close second favourite. Sure, there were moments that I thought he had a chance of being evacuated because he was a humungous ditz, but that just added to his character. Not knowing crabs pinch? Hilarious. Fighting from minute one with NaOnka? Hilarious. Almost pulling a Skupin and passing out from smoke inhalation? Hilarious. Just everything this guy said and did had me amazed. After the drudgery that was Tocantins and the "LOOK AT RUSSELL HANTZ, BEST PLAYER EVAR!" stage that was Samoa and HvV, I wasn't sure I'd ever laugh at Survivor again (it took me a while to appreciate Coach).

One of the issues people face when writing about Fabio is his game, because he's been put up there with others in the "WORST WINNER EVER" category. Frankly, I don't think he's one of the worst winners ever. I mean, that's obviously evident by the fact that he's Number 10 on my list out of 65 winners, but there's just so much more to this guy than at first glance that I feel needs defending.

First off, Judson is not dumb. He's a bit ditzy, but he is in no way dumb. He was actually in gifted classes all throughout high school, and is actually doing pretty well with his life. From what I heard he's doing some marine biology degree or something. However, his whole persona in Nicaragua was supposed to be that of a ditz, that was what he intended. He created the "Fabio" persona to make sure that people could feel safe around him, to write him off as a non-threat while other more prominent people (like first boot Shannon) were picked off and seen as targets (like what happened to Alina and Kelly B). He treaded the thin line between people writing him off as a non-threat to people writing him off as undeserving very well, as evident by the fact that he got the majority of the jury votes in the end.

There's also his immunity run at the end that people seem to think invalidates his "strategy". Well winning immunities is as valid a part of the game as any. Just because you're not in power it doesn't mean you don't control your fate - Fabio did that part with ease as well. He got Jane, a huge jury threat, booted out of her own alliance without any of the blame being put on him. He made Chase and Sash look like idiots in front of the jury on Day 36 without any of the blood being put on his hands. And hell, he didn't even need to start winning immunities until Day 36, which speaks volumes about how great his strategy was up until that point. While he may have been voted off without those immunity wins, it doesn't mean his game is less valuable than others. As Natalie White, Big Tom and Sue Hawk will atest to, playing dumb is one of the most dangerous strategies in Survivor.

Plus, would you really rather have seen anyone else win? Jane was a bitter old hag who got a forced positive edit because she was old and she was milking her husband's death at a rate that would make Sugar blush, Dan was lol but useless, Holly (unpopular opinion alert) was shrill and whiny (although I can see why people like her), Sash was the creepiest and most awkward guy to ever play Survivor, and Chase was a spineless wimp who let everyone else make decisions for him. None of them would have been half as satisfying winners as Fabio was, because Fabio was likeable, hilarious, and all around a fantastic winner for a fantastic seasons.

Love him and this season. I'm so happy he won. I have a ton I could say on him but this is a good enough write-up that I won't bother because you've said almost all of it. He's my second favorite new character of the post-Tocantins era, outclassed only slightly by Marty.

I don't know why you think I started watching at Samoa. I started watching at season 12. Why does thinking that Fabio is a bad winner mean that I started watching at Samoa? And Fabio was a terrible winner. He didn't control the votes, make any strategic moves, or build any alliances. All he did was win a couple of challenges, and all of the winners (except Tina, Sandra, Yul, and Natalie) won individual challenges.
