imageSeason 5 is without a doubt the best season of The Amazing Race ever made. You could make a case for Season 3 and Season 7 and Season 12, but Season 5 is the equivalent of Survivor: Pearl Islands to TAR. It is the original epic season with the epic characters, epic locations, epic storylines and just all-around epic ending. The thing that really sealed the deal to make this an epic season was it's winners, who much like everyone else around this part of the ranking, are genuinely amazing and likeable people who could have been the only real winners for this season.

Chip & Kim were 40-something-year-old parents who not only were just genuinely likeable people, but pretty large characters as well. Chip was a loveable ham in the way he said things and did things, and even though he did make a big deal out of some things (like refusing to leave Kami/Karli's cab for some reason, I forget why) it was just easy to see that they were genuinely enjoying themselves. And surprisingly enough, in a season with evolving gameplay and old mindsets being thrown to the curb, they were amazingly adept at adapting to their conditions and getting further in the race. Hell, they won the season because the plane they were supposed to be getting onto was delayed by fog so they settled for finding another plane. And of course, they were easily the most likeable and rootworthy winners of the first six seasons, which is nothing but a plus.

Of course, there were a few teams that were bigger and better characters throughout the season. The season, of course, wasn't just about Chip and Kim, but it was also about two other teams in particular.

The first was Colin and Christie, a guy and his pageant queen wife who both re-invented the way people race in TAR by being the most aggressive and cutthroat racers the race had ever seen up until that point. They were absolutely brutal at getting what they wanted not only through sheer skill but by social manipulation. However, Colin also had major anger issues, as demonstrated when he almost got arrested after he aggressively refused to pay for a cab, and his now legendary breakdown in the Philippines when he declared that HIS OX IS /BROKEN/! Thankfully they did get beaten in the final leg by Chip and Kim, because you don't get to be that much of an asshole and get rewarded with a win unless your names are Freddy and Kendra and you come one season later.

Then of course there were Charla and Mirna aka Mirna and Shmirna, who I already described in Eric & Danielle's entry as TAR's answer to Coach. This isn't an insult, by the way - Coach is a legendary Survivor character, perhaps objectively the greatest Survivor character of all time (let's just ignore his South Pacific appearance lalala), and being compared to him is like being compared to liquid gold. Charla and Mirna were that liquid gold all season, because much like Coach they were hypocritically hilarious. Charla may have been strong and had that little-person story going for her, but Mirna was the biggest shit-stirrer in the show's history. She could not speak to any other team without causing some sort of fight and some sort of fight would always be hilarious.

"HAVE YOU EVER DONE ANYONE IN YOUR /LIFE/ A FAVOUR?"

They were also just genuinely funny with whatever locals they came across, such as people at gas stations (plane impressions ftw), people on the sidewalk ("One question at a time, Charla!") and prostitutes ("Charla she's really pissed that we're asking her because she has business to do.").

It seems a bit asinine to dedicate a write-up so far up this list to a completely different team, but it's simply a showcase of how awesome TAR5 was, and Chip and Kim winning were the icing on the cake. They're not my favourite winners of all time, but like this placement on this list indicates, they're well and truly up there.

Gotta agree, amazing winners and an amazing season. It produced my all time favourite team, Charla and Mirna and gave us some amazing TAR characters like the dominating villains Colin and Christie and the bowling mums who nearly took it all the way Linda and Karen
