New's Movie Taste S3 - ROUND 3 (RESULTS)

Mar 26, 2022 by NewNightmare7
3 weeks in now! Getting down to it!

So I do wanna say that despite a low placement as well as an Elimination, I liked every movie submitted. Its tough but it just comes down to it.

With that said, the following people are SAFE:

stuartlittle16 - John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum (2019) - Hmm this is an interesting choice. I'm always perplexed at why people choose to submit later movies in the series. Understandably here, this is the only one that was released in May. To me, when movies in a series are submitted, my general expectation is the movie needs to stand on its own if I haven't seen the previous ones but sometimes I'm a completionist and will watch the previous ones in prep. Luckily, I have seen all 3 of these and for good reason. These are some of the best modern action movies because the action is just phenomenal. I love that the term Gun-Fu was coined from this series and it truly is that. Keanu Reeves is one of my favourite action stars/people in general. He just seems like such a wholesome person and I love his performances. He really dedicates himself to the craft and does alot of the stuntwork which I love. It feels authentic. The one thing I really like about this movie is that it has different stakes than the previous two. Its just a man on the run which I enjoy! I also love Laurence Fishburne. Overall, a solid movie and while not my favourite in the series, it delivers on expectations and im excited for the 4th one.

austino15fffan - Final Destination 3 (2006) - Im not gonna lie. This submission absolutely baffled me but there have been quite a bit that have surprised me so far so at this point i'm just gonna embrace it. I love the Final Destination series. Its like the right ammount of insanity that keeps me entertained even with the bad one like the 4th one. I know this one is a huge fan favourite and I definitely see why. Its probably the nost outlandish in concept. I love the Roller Coaster premonition (it was filmed at Playland in Vancouver where I used to go to all the time) and the deaths are just crazy. The tanning scene is arguably the best deaths of the entire series. Also, I just adore Mary Elizabeth Winstead. She is a delight in everything and I will die on that hill. This is just dumb entertainment at its finest. While it doesn't do anything to add to the lore of the series, it has a charm to it that I can't deny. Good job!

FromAWindow - Boy Erased (2018) - This movie genuinely frustrates me. I hate it and will never wanna watch it again. That being said, it is a very poweful and moving film that thrives on empathy. When I say I hate it, I mean the subject matter. It just infuriates me to see such horrible prejudice and projection onto the main character and everyone there and to know its a real place that has done alot of psychological stress on many people is horrible. It just strikes such hatred in me that I wanna stab everyone of those workers. Ew. Anyways, Lucas Hedges performance is really good. Just a kid struggling with identity and repression which I can completely relate to. Its so stressful to watch. I absolutely hate it. Thats all I wanna say. This movie does its job and its very powerful but god I hate it. I normally resonate more with movies that can entertain me and while this does not do that, I can't fault it as thats not the purpose.

Olympia - We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) - This is a movie I have wanted to see for quite some time. I love Tilda Swinton and I love psychological horror/thrillers. Also, my mistake on saying the film should have had a wide release but I didn't and yeah! The performances are really good! Eva is a character who really shouldn't be a parent and doesnt even wanna be a parent which makes this movie very interesting. Kevin is creepy as hell, I would not want him as my child but also I wouldn't want Eva as my parent. I just like the complexity to it. It brings up the ongoing psychological debate of Nature vs. Nurture and I find it fascinating. That being said. The movie can drag particularily in the middle section of the movie but when the ending comes around...oh my god like what the fuck. Its a great ended to a slow burner mind fuck that does a pretty good job!

Congrats on making it to round 4! Now onto our TOP 3:

LaCroix - Sister Act (1992) - I have heard of this movie but have never seen it and I was shook to know that Maggie Smith is in this movie? Bruh. This movie is just such a nice feel good movie. Im not really religious or anything but I felt very compelled for Dolores. There is something about Whoopi Goldberg that makes everything she does magical. Its a sight to behold and I absolutely loved her in this movie. The way she took all them nuns to church with her teaching was iconic. I stan. Maggie Smith is also a delight and I love her journey. I like seeing people understand different perspective. There isn't really much else I can say to this movie. Its just alot of fun and there is alot to enjoy.

Vixens - Ingrid Goes West (2017) - I love Aubrey Plaza and this just seems like the perfect movie for her as she always looks crazy but I love it. I also love Elizabeth Olson she is a gem. This movie feels very gen z! Between the internet stalking, the narcissism and Dan vaping throughout the whole movie, it felt off but very investing. I really like this movie. What I love most is that it puts that red carpet meme into perspective for me and I am so pleased. Aubrey Plaza is great. Very unhinged and offputting but its why I love her. Honestly I kind of feel for Ingrid. Its very hard for her to socially integrate but she tries and thats at least worth something. O'Shea Jackson Jr. Is also really good I was surprised. I really like his character and how sweet he was. Yeah, this is a great movie I really enjoyed it! Would I return to it? Im not entirely sure but thats irrelevant.

paul028 - Coraline (2009) - This is my friends favourite movie. She even got a tattoo if something referring to it. She ended up making me watch it on a car ride when we were 16 and I enjoyed it but never revisited it. Honestly I probably should have because this is just such an entertaining movie. I love the idea of escapism and it not being ideal. I feel like at some point everyone can relate to Coraline which makes her a great character. Dakota Fanning's voice work is really good. Im used to her younger roles so her voice sounds so different to me but I love it. I also love Keith David's performance as the cat. I just love the cat. Definitely the wisest character in the movie I stan. The animation is really good and flows really nicely. Alot better than other stop motion movies I've seen. I also love how dark this movie presents itself. It isn't afraid to be dark and I appreciate it. I love this movie and this is such a massive step up from last round so great job!

And with that, the winner of round 3 is....

paul028! Congrats!

And with that onto our BOTTOM 2:

imprincearthur - Wonder Woman (2017) - So this movie came out on my birthday! (June 2nd) This is a really solid movie. Truly the first good one from the DCEU I love that it was directed by a Woman. Gal Gadot is marvellous and stunning. The rest of the cast delivers (except for one that i'll get into in a hot moment). The action for the most part is pretty good but its really Wonder Woman's journey that sells the movie. Watching her come into her full form and just wanting to help people felt kind of refreshing especially from this very bleak universe at the time. Thats not to say this movie is without problems, because it has some. The villain is pretty underwhelming as is the majority of that battle. I wasn't really invested nor did I think there needed to be a villain of that calibre personally. It just felt a little out of place in an otherwise grounded story. Thats just my opinion though, this is a really solid movie and one of the best of the DCEU.

CalebDaBoss - The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008) - Yeah this is just misery that I don't really feel compelled to rewatch. I had to watch it in middle school to which I was just not interested in. It does not mean the movie is bad, I actually think there is some very interesting themes to it but its not one I particularily enjoy. I found reading the book to be alot more powerful to me as it explores the themes alot better. The best thing about the movie though is the chemistry between Bruno and Shmuel. Both of the performances are magnificent and as always, Vera Farminga is just a gem. Her agony at the final scene always sticks with me and I will never forget that.  I think overall, its a movie I never intend to revisit, but it does stick with you. It is a tragic movie and for that purpose, it does it's job. Like Boy Erased and such, I will never be entertained by this movie which is something I look for in terms of enjoyment from film but I can't fault it because thats not its purpose. You aren't supposed to feel good watching it.

So as I said, I didn't dislike either movie but with that being said, someone has to be eliminated and that is...
