New's Movie Taste - ROUND 1 (RESULTS)

Nov 5, 2021 by NewNightmare7
Hello and welcome back to my movie taste game!

https://thumbs.gfycat.com/ClassicHideousBuck-size_restricted.gif

What a great opening round! There was not one movie I disliked and that is great! With that being said, there are no LOW placements or BOTTOM placements this round, only a WIN and HIGH. <3

Here are the critiques:

Jaxon - Trick r' Treat (2007) - I literally just watched this for the first time this halloween right before the game started! I really enjoyed the film. It is really nicely paced and a fun time overall. Anna Paquin kills it and Sam is so adorable!!! (With the sack on). Its also shot pretty nicely and the colours/lighting is really cool especially for the 2000's era where all horror movies have a gross or bland colour grading. If this is a film that speaks to your taste than I know you enjoy films that are fun and im on board for that! Overall, a great horror movie that definitely entertains for the halloween season.

txashaun - White Oleander (2002) - To be honest, I had low expectations going into this film because it just seemed like a movie that didn't appeal to me but I really enjoyed this. Seeing this girl just continue to crumble was very devastating in a way that I strongly relate to. This movie had weight and substance while Thomas Newman's score was so subtle and beautiful. I'm excited to see what you have to offer going forward

tyleror - Sucker Punch (2011) - Hmm. This is an interesting one. Im not really a fan of Zack Snyder's visual style but I have to say I really did enjoy this movie for the most part. There are issues and clunkyness but it makes up for the interesting characters, particularily Rocket. Jena Malone kills this movie and I found her to be the best part. The action set pieces were also very enioyable. With all that said, I despised the ending. Im not gonna spoil it if some here haven't seen it and decide to read this but I was so let down with the ending because it makes a majority of the film feel irrelevant and a majority of that ending could have been good and satisfying had it not been for one particular moment. A fun movie none the less and if I had to rewatch it, I would!

turkeylover - Jawbreaker (1999) - Hmm...i'll start with my negatives. The movie gives me insane Heathers vibes which is great but in comparison it lacks the heart and witt of what makes Heathers iconic. Also, the transitions with those awful sound effects were horrendous. That being said, what a phenomenal cast!!! Everyone kills it especially the highly underrated Julie Benz (who is great in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Judy Greer. The movie works because of its cast I feel and that alone is good enough for me!

Becksta20 - Unbreakable (2000) - M. Night at one of his finest works. While it is a little bit slow paced, the film works wonders in what its achieving. I love the concept of this movie and the twist is fun for sure albeit an ending where I was left a little underwhelmed. Oddly enough this was the last film in the trilogy I watched despite it being the first but regardless, I still enjoyed it none the less.

PennyTrationStan - Josie and the Pussycats (2001) - Rosario Dawson is everything and I love her (and Alan Cumming). I wasn't really feeling it as it started, I felt like I was way out of my time to enjoy it but as it kept going along I found myself enjoying it more and more. The cast is spectacular and I always find Parker Posey so endearing. She has the weirdest stage prescence (especially in Scream 3) but it works for me? So yeah, a serve! There were also some parts that made me laugh hard so yay! Not the biggest fan of the music its a little too much thrash vibes but great movie overall!

tbrown_47 - Reservoir Dogs (1992) - Man I love this movie. Probably one of my favourite Tarantino films. Ita so contained but its so tense and suspenseful. Mr. Pink's escape sequence is one of my favourites ever and he is truly the only professional. Such a fun thrill ride that to me, never stops. My only gripe is some of the dialogue does not age well at all and it makes it feel very cringy in retrospect but I don't think it takes away what the movie has so thats good!

Symmetry888 - Ginger Snaps (2000) - Ginger did snap huh? I loved this movie! The chemistry of the two sisters were great and I really felt for their characters. Emily Perkin's face acting was pretty solid. I love how big her eyes can go and then Katherine Isabelle just kills the "I don't give a shit" attitude her character demands. I loved the part where Ginger just beats the shit out of Trina (I think thats her name). Bitch had it coming. My minor criticism would be some of the cinematography was a mess. The constant dutch angles made it look and feel like a student film at times and was disorienting espcially in contrast to some really good shots. Overall, a really fun movie that got me in my feels a little bit at the end.

oswordo3 - Mean Girls (2004) - Classic choice. Probably the most classic of all the submissions and for good reason. This movie hits all the checkmarks of a Teen comedy and has a sort of timeless quality to it. The cast is stellar, the writing is smart and the beats hit right when they are supposed to. That being said, while I love the movie, I do think its an obvious go to and doesn't give me a good enough look to your overall taste. But there is always time to show me that.

nateclove - Evil Dead (2013) - Genuinely one of the best horror movies ever made and that says alot. The fact that it is a remake of all things speaks volumes as well. Im not really a fan of slapstick horror comedy and I don't click with the original so when I saw this, it was such a nice surprise to see this premise so raw, so rough and so gory which is amazing. This isn't fun gore either its disgusting and I love it. Also Jane Levy..mom.

Demgirl6 - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010) - Oh hell yeah. This is probably in my top 5 movies of all time, probably top 3. To me, it's flawless and the rewatch factor is endless. When I was 11 I watched this movie every day after school for like a month straight and it still doesn't bore me. The style, the editing, the effects, the amazing music, all the performances are top notch from a stellar cast and the story arcs feel earned and complete (I know the manga's are more developed but for what was translated into film, im content). Im obsessed and this is a go to to show anyone and everyone if they haven't seen it. Go Edgar Wright!

turkeylover thats totally fair omg. I kind of like the pretentiousness of Heathers cause its like just on that line of slipping into bad taste and I love it for that. But Jawbreaker is arguably more fun!
