I hope you all had fun with this theme. There was not a single song that was submitted that I didn’t like, so this round proved very difficult to judge. Let’s see the results.
Round 1: Denial
Zach3051: Baby Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts - Lake Street Dive
I definitely agree this is a good representation of denial. Lyrically, the song was strong and very on point for the theme. Musically, this song was such a jam. I give every song at least two listens to write my comments. For this song, I immediately pushed that replay button because that’s how eager I was to listen to this again. Well done.
Cheritaisdelicious: Prague - Damien Rice
I thought this song told a really good story and was very fitting for the theme. I loved the instrumental interludes between the verses, and overall, I felt a lot of emotion coming through this song. This was a very strong choice as well.
Rubes: Irreplaceable - Beyonce
This song is such a bop. I definitely understand your interpretation of the anger in this song with the entire chorus being directed at her ex just to hurt him out of anger. Speaking of chorus, the final chorus is so good and really ends the song on such a high note.
ILoveLarry: Motion Sickness - Phoebe Bridgers
It was extremely interesting hearing the juxtaposition between the song’s lyrics and the song’s musical production. This song is definitely a good example of how people process and express their anger in different ways.
This was super close. Both songs received the same individual score, so deciding the winner really just came down to the tiniest details.

Round 3: Bargaining
Ouijake: Iris - Goo Goo Dolls
That opening line is textbook bargaining. I enjoy the Goo Goo Dolls and this is definitely a classic. The band in conjunction with the backing orchestra really makes this song such a good one.
FromAWindow: Just the Same - Bruno Major
I appreciate you sharing this song. This song has a very minimalistic feel which really helps put his vocal and his emotions into the forefront.
I think of the four stages, this is probably the hardest one to nail. Kudos to you both for taking up the challenge and rising to the occasion. This was another extremely close round.

Round 4: Depression
Stuartlittle16: By the Grace of God - Katy Perry
I’m not a big Katy Perry fan, so I haven’t heard this song before. I thought this song did a good job of representing that feeling of emptiness and hopelessness of depression in the opening and showing the strength to overcome it throughout the rest of the song. In that respect, I thought the song went above and beyond. I definitely enjoyed seeing this side of Katy Perry. Thank you for sharing this song.

I really appreciate how you went beyond the lyrics to find a song that musically represents the theme. I think your description of this song is spot on. It really is the unsteadiness and unpredictability of this song that makes me really enjoy this song. Good job here.
