I know I said I was most excited to judge the rap battle, but this round takes the cake. Before we get started, I just have a quick life update on my end. I will be starting a new job soon. So what does that mean for you? We’re going to speed this game up with the goal of posting the final battle before Christmas and crowning a winner sometime after the holiday. This way, I can judge songs and wrap everything up during my last little bit of funemployment. More details of how we will move forward will be shared in the next episode =). FromAWindow: No Roots - Alice Merton
I had fun with this song. The bassline was simple and effective, and I loved everything about the bridge and the bit that followed. I can’t decide whether or not I like her voice, but overall, this is a really nice song.
NewNightmare7: It’s My Life - No Doubt
Tony Kanal is one of the best, and this is one of my favorite No Doubt songs. The bassline is super groovy, though I feel like there are some parts of the song where it is slightly masked by other elements of the song. But I love it regardless.
Ouijake: Redbone - Childish Gambino
This is such a chill song. I loved the funkiness this song exudes. This was not a song I expected to come from this challenge, but I dig it.
Becksta20: Under Pressure - Queen ft. David Bowie
I’m prepared to be roasted for this...but I don’t really like this song. I’m not big on David Bowie and what he brings to the table here. That said, the opening bassline might be one of the most recognizable basslines, and it’s definitely my favorite part of the song.
ILoveLarry: Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
Absolutely iconic. That bass is literally the reason this is my favorite Queen song. This song is extremely bass forward, and the bassline is fantastic. Love this pick!
GrrrImABear: Make Me Feel - Janelle Monae
I’m all about the funk, and this song is definitely funky. That opening just makes me want to move. The funky bass beat was the star in the beginning, and I really liked the lead up into the chorus.
Stuartlittle16: Lovesong - The Cure
This song has a really nice bassline. I’m not sure if there was a spot where I thought the bass really shined, but I appreciated how prominent and audible it was throughout the song.
Zach3051: I Want You Back - The Jackson 5
Another song with an extremely lovable and recognizable bassline. Similar to some other submissions, I wouldn’t say the bassline shines in any particular part of the song, but I think it’s still a pretty integral part of such a fun song.
Cheritaisdelicious: Give It Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers
I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea is definitely one of my favorite bassists. This is such a good song, but I think if you’re looking for a RHCP song where Flea really pops off, there are some better options.
Rubes: HUMBLE - Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick is one of my favorite rappers, so this was a pleasant surprise. This is one where the track’s simplicity really works since there isn’t anything to mask the bass. You said you were taking a risk, but this definitely wasn’t a bad choice.
This has been the hardest round to score thus far, and took me way longer to judge than normal. But here are the results.
The scores were all pretty close this round. Each submission was a worthy choice, and I couldn’t justify giving anyone a super low score. That just makes the next challenge that much more important. Stay tuned for the next episode.
