This elimination round is a little different because there are 3 of you... but do not fret because only ONE will be leaving us tonight. This was the CLOSEST elimination round by far with only .25 of a point separating the bottom two. You all really stepped up to the plate tonight because nobody’s song had scored below an 8. useamint - Don’t Take The Money (Bleachers)
M: Aw this was really cute. This is the type of well written love song that I can actually get behind, it’s a little cheesy but just the right amount. It definitely makes ya feel good which is always nice. I will say that if I was in a bad mood I’d probably hate this but luckily for you I’m not! It’s just a really pretty song, lyrically and musically. I love the way it builds up to the chorus and really gets you into it as well. Nice pick!
K: Honestly on the second listen you had me a little bit with this. It’s a really cute song this is definitely something I’d put on my summer playlist and blast with my friends while driving to the beach. I for sure thought it was gonna be some weird quirky indie song I would dislike at first LOL. They’re talented and this song also gives me old school pop vibes which I loved. The video was weird I kind of hated it but the song is good and that’s all that matters!!
J2999 - In Your Eyes (The Weeknd)
M: Oh you’ve finally struck gold with your mainstream selections! This album was awesome and The Weeknd really stepped his game up with it. I was never a fan before outside of a few songs, but now I very much am. On top of that, this song is an absolute BOP. Probably my favourite song of 2020, I’ve sung this song in the shower, in the car, at work, making food, playing video games, with friends, etc. It’s just such an easy song to go off to. Also, everything is complimented so well. The vocals, production, instrumentation, and lyrics all fit together so nicely. Speaking of the lyrics, they are a big part of why I really like this song as well. It paints such a vivid story of a broken relationship. The music video is also awesome. Fantastic pick!
K: Oh I mean...duh. The Weeknd all day every day baby. This entire album reminds me of Willie_ because I don’t think he stopped speaking about it. This album was definitely unique I loved what he did with it, branching out with a different style that was much more 80’s/90’s pop nostalgic. I will say that it’s not my favorite song off the album!! Heartless and Blinding Lights kind of outsold. This song is really chill and just good vibes (even though the lyrics do not agree) so it was definitely a great pick duh.
Christian_ - Because Of You (Reba McEntire ft. Kelly Clarkson)
M: LMAO I’m kinda weak at this being your pick. It really fits you Mr. Underscore! Anyways, this is a good one! Both of their voices are really nice in this, although I absolutely cannot take Reba super seriously, probably because my mom used to watch her show and it just gives me flashbacks to that. So hearing her sing about a shit relationship is kinda jarring, BUT it was a good song and something I could definitely shed a theoretical tear over in the right situation. It’s fairly basic, but still is solid overall. PS I would’ve preferred Kelly’s solo version, but that’s probably because of the aforementioned PTSD.
K: Reba kind of terrifies me I’m not going to lie and she also looks like the woman from BB10 who yells at Jerry. She’s talented though!! I did prefer Kelly’s part way more I think she has an amazing voice. The message behind the lyrics are definitely powerful and they harmonize very well together. I could imagine screaming these lyrics after a heartbreak it would DEFINITELY go on sad girl hours playlist. That being said I honestly do like it as much as I like Don’t Take The Money so this is really tough. The song is really pretty and is such a throwback but a GOOD one to the point where it wasn’t overplayed imo. A good choice Sister Christi.

In the previous Sing For Your Life, the spotlight had unfortunately faded on JoeFromUnderArmour in another great nail-biter of an elimination round. These rounds are really starting heating up and going “0-100 real quick,” which brings us to today's theme.
Matt and I are both big fans of rap music and it’s safe to say it’s one of our favorite genres. So for today we want you to submit any rap song of your choice. Rap is a very broad theme, but see this as an opportunity to think out of the box and submit something unique! There are so many different styles and artists out there so this should be a really interesting round! We’re both super excited to listen to what you got for this theme. . mbarnish1 - Free Fallin’ (Tom Petty)
M: Yes Barny! Tom Petty is so good and this song is definitely one of his best, even if it is his most known. It’s such good vibes and is a great song to listen to when you just wanna relax and think. It’s so simple but everything about it just works. I also get nostalgia from my dad playing this in his truck while we drove home from my school, and it always gave me good feelings that I was done for the day and could relax now. This song honestly used to be one of my all-time favourites and while I don’t think I’d say that anymore, it’s still an awesome song that I never dislike hearing. Great pick.
K: These oldies are so funny coming from you because you’re a wee baby. Definitely an iconic song from it’s time and I loved the aesthetic of the music video LOL. Honestly another song that I’ve heard one too many times but I don’t mind it. My favorite part is probably the chorus, it’s a really laid back song but it’s not something I’d chill to. It was definitely a good pick though nothing bad to say about it.
JoeFromUnderArmour - Run-Around (Blues Traveller)
M: I really didn’t know this song was called this or the band that sung it and expected this to be a song I didn’t know, but alas! This is another throwback, and just like Free Fallin’ it gives really good vibes. This one is more of a fun and carefree song IMO, and definitely something I could see popping up at a 90s themed party. I’m ngl I really don’t really understand half of what they’re saying and had to look up the lyrics but it has a cute meaning behind it and the lyrics definitely fit the song. Y’all are making these elims really hard man, great work!
K: Holy cannoli, unlike Matt I’ve listened to this song 5 days a week at work for the past 3 years. I think any song from my job just violates my ears whenever I hear it outside of work so this was just such a bad coincidence for you. It’s a good song for it’s time but it’s personally not my cup of tea :-(. Even if it was my first time listening to it or 700th this is not something I’d bop to sadly.

In the previous Sing For Your Life we wished Minie an unfortunate goodbye in a close elimination round. I guess you could say we “had to go our own ways.” Bouncing off of that horrible High School Musical 2 pun, that brings us to today’s theme.
I did theatre in high school for four years and forced this idea upon Matt. We want you to submit any ORIGINAL Broadway show/TV show/Movie musical song. This means covers of songs in Movies/TV shows/Broadway musicals are not allowed; it has to have been originally created for wherever it comes from. For example, covers of songs from Glee and that horrible Riverdale performance of Mad World wouldn’t be accepted because it’s not the show’s music. **To clarify because there's confusion: these are songs made for and sang by fictional characters. Anything in Disney movies pretty much works/Broadway musicals/shows like Victorious/movies like Pitch Perfect, Rock of Ages, etc.**
Remember no submitting artists you’ve previously used (even though this is probably not an issue here), be creative and break a leg!! We can’t wait to listen.
Absol and Minie you were the bottom two of last round and had to submit a song of personal choice to Sing For Your Lives. After listening to both of your songs, we knew this would be an incredibly hard elimination round to judge. You had both submitted songs we really enjoyed so it was rather difficult to pick which we’d liked more. Both of your choices were unique and really showed us what you had! Now onto the results…
Absol - Good Days (SZA)
M: Ohhhh this was such good vibes. I really like SZA and this is one of her best IMO. I was wondering why I hadn’t heard it and I’m seeing now that it was released just a few weeks ago so that makes sense! This is absolutely going on my chill playlist, it’s such a good song to just vibe to and think about life while listening. She has such a smooth and lovely voice as well, this song just feels RIGHT. Great pick!
K: I don’t listen to SZA much and only really ever hear her featured on songs but this was really good!! You definitely have to be in the mood to listen to a song like this because it did feel slightly repetitive and generic pop-ish after a while to me. It is a really good lo-fi summery song I’d blast while driving to the beach. SZA has a great voice and overall I thought it was a good pick!
Minie - No Diggity (Blackstreet ft. Dr. Dre, Queen Pen)
M: This is a great throwback to a mid/late 90s rap era that was so good. All of their styles mesh so well in this song and they all really brought their best. I love the classic production of course, and that hook is definitely iconic. The lyrics are also super fun. The only real downside to this song (and it’s small) is that I’ve heard it so many times that sometimes the hook bores me a bit. BUT it’s still iconic and I do love the rest of the song. Nice pick!
K: Unlike Matt I’ve never listened to this song before but I really loved the vibes. Rap from the 90’s is so fun bop to and this definitely wasn’t just a song that blended in with all the others from this decade. This was a super fun pick and I could see me putting it on my hype playlist. I really like the second verse I’m not sure which one of them that was but I kind of loved everything about this song. It was definitely a great pick and I slightly preferred it more.

That was a good first round, some of you definitely made a splash and stood out - just remember to not be afraid to get creative with your submissions, we love new music just as much as the well known bops! As for today’s theme, we hope this one’s a bit more straightforward than the last. Matt and I are real animal lovers! They are just so interesting and every animal is so unique. They all bring something different to the table, and we hope you guys will too this round! So, we want you to submit a song that contains an animal in the song title! It can be any kind of animal, and it doesn’t even have to be what the song is about, but there needs to be a type of animal in the song title.
Also, just a reminder to not use the same artist you’ve already used! You can use an artist that someone else has used, but no repeating an artist you have already used yourself unless we state otherwise.
