Penny's Best of TSC 2021: ilovetosing

Jan 8, 2022 by PennyTrationStan
ahhh, the man, the myth, the LEGEND. ilovetosing came onto TSC with an established BRAND that distinguished him from everyone else, known for his characteristic taiwanese gut-wrenching ballads /art pop extraordinaires / prototype hyperpop hymns. this made #ilovetosing one of the most recognisable rookies of TSC, and i do think that overall his sends are too ahead of their time for the simple-minded sissies at TSC, me unfortunately included. but there were some songs from his catalogue that i truly understood and resonated with, so it’s my time to highlight those!

✧ “i love you john” by sandee chan // finished 22nd in TSC 452, 23 points (0 points given)

for some reason i didn’t point this in its original week despite giving it a good comment? i’m part of the problem. anyways this is one of the most mesmerizing songs from the entire year? and it’s really all thanks to that chorus which i just looooove like conceptually and the execution. the dissonance between the gleeful sugary instrumental and her whispery dead vocals give off this almost unsettling vibe to the song. it’s a very interesting listen to ME. the verses might’ve been the reason i left this off my ballot in its original week, but they’ve grown on me. though the highlight really is that chorus. bop!

✧ “play” by jolin tsai // finished 22nd in TSC 439, 54 points (0 points given)

another 0 pointer LMAO i’m telling you, ilovetosing submissions don’t hit at FIRST but they age like wine. this song is balls to the walls insanity like the entire production is a clusterfuck but it’s also like fun? i live for this trash. i actually really like the pre-chorus to this. my enjoyment is more on the ironic side but i also move to this. bop!

✧ “90s music” by kimbra // finished 14th in TSC 450, 46 points (10 points given)

BOP BOP BOP BOP. i was there when the TSC hivemind collectively agreed that this was the worst piece of music that had ever been recorded. i, a free thinker, saw through their pea-brained skulls and knew there was something special about ‘90s music’. and as i kept going back to it in the week it was sent, it kept clicking with me more and more. simply put this is the best song i’ve ever heard. it might be a deformed sad little baby of a song, but it is MY deformed sad little baby to love. that pre-chorus is unironically one of my favorite moments of the year. BOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

✧ “speechless song” by sandy lam // finished 11th in TSC 431, 62 points (12 points given)

and here it is girls, by far my favorite #ilovetosing submission. this is just so gorgeous and artful and WOW the collapse, y’know? she just woke up one day and decided the ray of light gays needed NOURISHMENT. lingua ignota? bjork? sarah brand? none of them have NOTHING on art pop connoisseur sandy lam. i love everything about this, it’s so theatrical and for 2011, the production doesn’t sound dated at all! truly a cinematic pop masterpiece, society owes a lot to speechless song for being so incredibly masterful.

next blog is scheduled to be honorable mentions #2 which is definitely coming out totally yeah for sure
