Hozier is an Irish singer who wrote this song to attack homophobia in the church, which is a big issue in Ireland and Northern Ireland as religion is very highly valued there. There is a religious war between Ireland and Northern Ireland, Protestants vs. Catholics, and this has led to polarizing beliefs on LGBTQ+ rights. What often ended up happening was the Irish Republican Army would track down gay couples and bully, torture, or straight up murder them and their families just for being gay. This song shows the horrors of LGBTQ+ struggles in Ireland and Northern Ireland to this day.
