J - This had my undivided attention the second this man opened his mouth. Oh my GOD, I did not expect that much soul. I can feel the ache in every word, the passion and the pain. This got a visceral emotional reaction out of me, this hit something pretty deep in my soul. You asked us to save you, and I think you’re getting exactly what you came for here.
N - I’m gonna have to agree with Julian here, and for a song called “Save Me”, you surely did that. This song SAVED YOU this faceoff. No chance of even going home from me!
J - I’ve always felt Ed Sheeran makes his best material when he’s being emotionally open and honest. Where he pulls back the curtain a bit, lays it all on the table, and shows some real emotions. This definitely does that, and does that effectively. He’s done this type of song a bit better but that’s a VERY high bar to clear. I don’t blame him for not constantly being able to match the quality of something like Afire Love or Visiting Hours. Still, I did enjoy this and will likely be revisiting it on my own time!
N - This isn’t a Top 3 Ed song fo me, but it works, and the theme of your duo is fitting for this faceoff… would it beat your partner’s? Not necessarily. But it works.
J - Even before I start this, I’m already nervous for you. Generally I’ve been the one who’s loud about my opinions on songs as soon as they’re posted before Noah gets to listen, but he expressed that he hates this song before I had the chance to listen to it. This sounds like something I SHOULD be into. Why does this do absolutely nothing for me? I can’t say I have the same level of negative feeling Noah has for this, but I can’t say I enjoyed it either. It left no impact on me.
N - I think Julian exaggerated my dislike for this song, but yeah, I remember having this downloaded when I was younger on iTunes and to this day I question why I ever did, it honestly, I don’t know if it’s the beat, or the intro, or like, something about it just makes me feel gross? Like I don’t match with it, and it just.. Bleh. I’ll give you benefit of the doubt: I sat through the entire song before making my official judgement call, but when you listen to the other three songs here and then this… ugh, it doesn’t work for me bud, I’m sorry.
J - More Fiona! Yes! I am a bit of a sucker for the critical darling indie acts (if my responses to Luke’s songs this season have been any sort of indication, lol) and, yeah, this hit the spot. Fiona Apple is a fantastic storyteller, she has such a way with words and can paint most situations in ways you’d never heard before and would never even think to imagine before her. The music is incredible, her voice is incredible, I don’t know what I can say here that I didn’t say about the Fiona song from round 1. This is a very safe pick for me specifically, I don’t know how well it’s gonna work for Noah but you’ve got me in your corner!
N - So we went from a clear clear disliked song of mine, to this…. And a Julian says.. I’m a bit indifferent on Miss Apple. I can’t say I dislike it, I can’t say I love it either, it’s a solid neutral for me. I do get the story, and sure her voice is nice, but the color and the shape of the song just don’t match for me.. If you get what I mean. It’s okay, and obviously won’t put you in too much danger of the four.
This one was TOUGH. As stated earlier, we have to say goodbye to 2 of you today. That said, let's get the easy decisions out of the way first. We had one clear frontrunner in this elimination round and one clear 4th place.
