Am I all that thrilled for an all-athletes season of Dancing With The Stars? I was, but seeing how the figure skaters are already pulling ahead, this season is already as predictable as ever. Doesn’t mean I’m not excited to see some good dancing in the future. Here are the power rankings for the first round of dancing (including those eliminated off the bat).
10. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Lindsay Arnold- Oh Kareem. How can you not love this guy? The dancing isn’t really there, and the height difference really complicates things. But he still makes me smile, and in a way, I’m kinda rooting for him.
9. Arike Ogunbowale and Gleb Savchenko- I think Arike is a lot of fun, but she has a pretty long road ahead of her. I also think she’s one of the lesser-known faces in this competition, which doesn’t suit her too well for voters. I think she shows lots of potential, and I want to see her do well, but it wasn’t a standout to me.
8. Johnny Damon and Emma Slater- I’m a huge Yankee fan, so seeing Johnny made me happy. And he showed lots of potential, but with the tight schedule of the competition, he didn’t have time to grow. This was still a fun routine and Johnny brought lots of joy to the competition in just the short time he was there.
7. Jamie Anderson and Artem Chigvinstev- Jamie brought such a lovely spirit to the competition, but her moves were a bit stiff and I can see why she was forgotten in voting. Was it one of the two worst to me? No it wasn’t. But it was in the weaker half of the bunch.
6. Chris Mazdzer and Witney Carson- For the first routine of the night, it was fine. The first routine is usually underscored. Chris has potential, but it wasn’t particularly anything I was super enthusiastic about, and I don’t know how many true fans he actually has.
5. Jennie Finch Daigle and Keo Motsepe- Keo always puts together nice dances, but has never been a stand out pro. But I really liked this routine, and hope Jennie goes far enough to give Keo a boost to his reputation. I liked this a lot and think it shows lots of good potential for Jennie.
4. Mirai Nagasu and Alan Bersten- Mirai did an amazing job for her first go. She obviously has so much fun doing this, and knows how to show personality through her dancing. There were a tad bit of sloppy moments, but for a first dance, this was great to watch, and she clearly has potential to win this thing.
3. Josh Norman and Sharna Burgess- NFL players are always great entertainers, but only few have gone on to win. But with the Athlete season, Josh can truly show off his moves and has a good shot at winning. Especially since there are 3 figure skaters competing who obviously have the edge, some fresh blood like Josh’s may attract voters to give this football player some votes. His dancing was really fun and one of the most surprising of the night, and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here.
2. Tonya Harding and Sasha Farber- Tonya is going to have LOTS of supporters, but also a TON of haters. She may not be around for too long because of how controversial her participation will be. But if dancing ability is the sole factor, Tonya is an absolutely great dancer. She has such grace in her moves, and her figure skating background is fully coming into the light. One of the most beautiful routines of the night. I hope she sticks around because it would be a great comeback story for her.
1. Adam Rippon and Jenna Johnson- Adam came out the gate super strong. Jenna had the short end of the stick last time, but it looks like she has a great chance at the mirrorball this time. Adam let it all loose on the dance floor, showing impressive precision and technique. Should be an entertaining season with his high-energy dances.
Going forward, I think it’ll be the figure skaters vs. Josh. And who will prevail? Most likely Adam, who showed the most potential. But I’d love to see Tonya make a run. Unfortunately, it looks like the end for basketball.
