American Idol S20 Power Rankings (Top 24, Group 1)

Apr 17, 2022 by PowerRankings101
imageWe’re back with more Idol chat! This season, it looks like we’re going back to the classic days of Idol where only 4 people are going after this first round of audience voting (good, it gives more people opportunities to shine). So how does this first half of contestants rank, and which two will unfortunately come up just short?

12. Scarlet- Scarlet was a mess this week. I sort of lost respect for her in her duet round when she left her partner out to dry and laughed at him when he was trying to learn the words. So Scarlet had a lot of making up to do, and I don’t think she did it. This was a fun enough song choice, but in a vocal competition, it really didn’t show off anything too impressive aside from production value, which unlike someone like Tristen or in the next ranking Katyrah, she hasn’t quite mastered that yet. I think she’s in trouble, and will only be saved if the audience wanted to vote for the popular song choice alone.

11. Dan Marshall- Dan wasn’t on his A-game tonight. He seems like a nice guy, but in the midst of all these grade-A singers, his vocal fell a bit flat in comparison. Luckily, he went later on in the night and I could see him getting votes because he’s a more memorable presence, but I don’t think he’s destined to go too far this season.

10. Danielle Finn- Danielle had some troubles this week. She did have some interesting runs planned out in her song, but the moments where she really could’ve shone through, she sorta hid behind her upper head voice. I wish she just let it out a bit more with the bigger moments of the song, and I do think going smack dab in the middle of the night with this unmemorable rendition will hurt her in this competition.

9. Jay Copeland- Jay’s rendition of “I Want You Back” was solid, but it did feel like a weird, restrained song for someone so bold and with so much capability to do something more dazzling. As one of the platinum ticket people, I have no doubt he’ll make the top 10 or something, but I do think he’s going to need to pick better songs if he wants to actually have a shot at winning this thing.

8. Mike Parker- Mike did much better in his pre-performance package than he did when it came time to perform the song. That being said, his emotional moments with Jimmy were certainly enough to win me over, and I’m sure it’ll win others over as well. He is emerging with a real sense of artistry and who he wants to be, and seeing him mold to this country genre has been really nice to see.

7. HunterGirl- This was far from HunterGirl’s best vocal, but I do think she really excelled in getting the crowd happy and performing like a seasoned vet. I think that’s HunterGirl’s strength is her charisma. I do hope the vocal next time matches the stage presence, but like Jay, that Platinum Ticket will surely get her a long way. I’m not worried about her.

6. Emyrson Flora- Emyrson is the youngest one out there, but I think she’s definitely one of the most seasoned. I do think her song choice was good, though it did feel a tad repetitive by the end. But her vocal quality itself is good enough to carry any song, and I look forward to seeing what else is up her sleeve.

5. Tristen Gressett- Tristen is a showman first and foremost, and totally plays into his strengths. It wasn’t the best vocal, but on a night where a lot of vocals fell flat, this actually ended up being one of the better ones of the night. He’s playing into his strengths, and I can definitely see an artist emerging.

4. Sage- Sage’s “Jolene” was heavenly to the ears. We hadn’t heard much of her in Hollywood, but whenever we have heard her, she’s shown to be a really impressive artist with a great resonance in that lower tone. I loved this rendition. She took a simple song, executed it perfectly, and I think it’ll pay off greatly for her.

3. Nicolina- Nicolina is a beast. We know that. And I think she’s really leaning into picking some really great belty song choices that are also super popular with voters, hence this iconic Sia song. I immediately see the next Grace Kinstler emerging before our eyes, and I think she’ll follow Grace’s shoes and be around to the very end. She’s great (even if her audition is still my personal favorite showing of hers to date).

2. Jacob Moran- Jacob really brought it this week. I love his higher notes, his runs, his riffs. But this week, he also committed to the emotionality of it all, which really elevated the vocal. He’s been one of my favorites from the start, and like Sage (and my #1 which I’ll talk about in a sec), I do wish they featured them more throughout Hollywood week. Either way, he’s giving me major Adam Lambert vibes and I could see him being a dark horse in the long run.

1. Elli Rowe- Where has this girl BEEN? We saw her audition, but that was pretty much it. They should show her more because she has *hands down* one of the prettiest voices in this competition. This rendition of “Everywhere” by Fleetwood Mac was soulful, soft, delicate, and incredibly refined. This was definitely my favorite performance of a rather lackluster night. If she goes home, it’ll only be because she has barely been featured in the edit. If her talent is any indicator, she should be top 10.

So as for this bunch, I think it could go one of two ways. We could see people like Jacob, Elli, or Sage fail because of their overall edits, which would be an absolute TRAVESTY. Or, America will realize that they all brought their A-game and go for someone like Scarlet, Dan, or Danielle who failed to impress this week. I do think with only 2 people going home, I do think America will pick the better vocalists to go through, which should mean that my top 9 will all survive. Between my bottom 3, I do think going later in the night will help Dan more than the other two ladies, so I’m picking Dan to survive and the other 2 to unfortunately bid farewell to the idol stage.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Home- Scarlet and Danielle Finn

Going Into the Top 20- Nicolina, HunterGirl, Jay Copeland, Elli Rowe, Sage, Jacob Moran, Mike Parker, Emyrson Flora, Tristen Gressett and Dan Marshall
