American Idol S20 Power Rankings (Top 20 - Part 2)

Apr 24, 2022 by PowerRankings101
imageIt’s time to rank the top 20 yet again, but this time knowing that six of them didn’t make it. Let me gather my thoughts first: A) I miss Elli and Sage already, B) I was pretty sure Jacob would be in our top 14 but he’s an example of someone who really didn’t deliver when the pressure was on, C) I’m shocked America didn’t love Jay as much as I predicted, D) Dan was the biggest shock of inclusion, E) I was underestimating Ava for sure. Everything else panned out as expected for the most part. Now let’s rank these top 20 to see how they fare headed into the top 14.

20. Katyrah Love- I think Katyrah once again delivered a weak vocal, and while I do love her confidence and stage presence, I think this was yet again the weakest vocal of the night for sheer pitch and tone problems alone. RESULT: Eliminated.

19. Dan Marshall-  Honestly can’t believe Dan made it through, and I don’t know if that’s a country edge thing or if he’s just resonating that much with casual viewers. I don’t see him lasting much longer. His vocal was fine, but incredibly uninteresting in terms of the arrangement. He also missed some of the huge riffs and run moments, which really stuck out like a sore thumb. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

18. Cameron Whitcomb- After a pretty great surprise of a vocal last time, this was a step backward for Cameron. While it continued to be pretty restrained, I don’t think the vocals themselves impressed much. I’m not surprised to see him go, but hey, I’ll miss the backflips I guess. RESULT: Eliminated.

17. Cadence Baker-  I’m sorry but Ryan did her dirty by making it sound like she had made it only to pull the rug out under her. I think it showed in her confidence for the song, as she missed some bigger notes and seemed all around a little unsure. That being said, I do like her voice quality itself and think she had glimpses of something worth praising, and had an all around better vocal than a few others tonight. RESULT: Eliminated.

16. Lady K- Lady K was my pre-live show favorite, but since her showstopper in Hollywood, I just haven’t felt the same magic and charm from Lady K. This was a bit pitchy, off the rails, and all in all a pretty weak arrangement that didn’t serve her talents well. I hope she can bring it with something showstopping next time, because I think her story is getting her votes, but as for a winner, I think she may be losing a bit of steam while others continue to excel. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

15. HunterGirl- HunterGirl has been so solid, but this was a bit of a step back. There were a few pitch problems and just didn’t stand out as much as her originals. The chorus itself didn’t excite, and while I love her tone, she’s going to need to up her game as she continues her status as one of the front-runners. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

14. Jacob Moran-Jacob has been a vocal beast this season, but I think this performance showed that maybe he doesn’t have the chops to fully perform at a grade-A level under pressure. He’s got such a good voice, but really lost some control as the performance went along and reached the bigger moments of the song. He probably should’ve picked something else because this only reminded us how much better his audition was than this. RESULT: Eliminated.

13. Ava Maybee- Ava making it into the top 14 was a bit of a surprise, but she definitely keeps showing how original and special her vocal quality is with every vocal. I don’t know if this was a great song choice, especially in the high notes it showcased. But when she was resting in that lower place, it really soared, and she should continue playing into those strengths. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

12. Jay Copeland- Jay is an acquired taste I think, especially here with some of the bigger headvoice moments. But I do really appreciate his fight and stage presence. He was not shaken by the results whatsoever and really fought for his spot, and good for him. He really killed the performance even if the vocals had some weird moments here and there. RESULT: Judges’ Save.

11. Sage- Sage is someone I thought would really win the judges over with her vocal, but this was probably the weakest of her live performances thus far (which for her isn’t saying much since she’s always been pretty killer). Her voice seemed a little more tired than usual, but I do think she used that rasp to her advantage and dug into it. She has such a unique presence and quality and I wish the judges had recognized it, but I do understand why they ultimately didn’t go with it. She’s special and will have a great career regardless. RESULT: Eliminated.

10. Tristen Gressett- Tristen will never be the top vocalist, BUT he showed today why that doesn’t matter as he REALLY knew how to rise to the occasion and give the judges no choice but to save him. I’m glad he got that shot, because he really left it all on stage and delivered the best of his personal journey thus far. RESULT: Judges’ Save.

9. Leah Marlene- Leah sang an original, and I do think a few moments missed because she was a tad exasperated, but she still nailed the moments that mattered. And the song itself is really good, and shows true artistry. She’s going pretty far, and if she has another moment like the previous night, she’ll be an established front runner for sure. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

8. Noah Thompson- Noah is just such a nice, likable guy and it really shows in his performances. I am still a tad bored by some of his performances, but I can’t deny that his voice is terrific, and if I had to compare him to someone like Chayce from last season that is very much in his wheelhouse, I think I’d prefer to listen to Noah. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

7. Nicolina- This is a great song for Nicolina, and while we’ve heard it before, there’s a reason she keeps coming back to it. Do I think it’s the most astounding version out there? Probably not, only because i’ve heard the original actresses in Waitress kill this song with even bigger moments, but Nicolina’s rendition is still something worth praise and shouldn’t be brushed off. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

6. Mike Parker-Mike handled the pressure so well and really rose to the occasion. This was one of his best performances of the season and totally made me think of him as someone who could win this thing (even if the results show that America may not fully be on his side). This was as good as he could’ve done to get that save. RESULT: Judges’ Save.

5. Emyrson Flora- Adele really is the perfect person to cover for Emyrson. The tone fits so perfectly. She really is maturing as a singer week by week and has been a dark horse that I think could have a really good chance of making it further than expected. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

4. Allegra Miles- Allegra sang an original, and showcased even more the type of artist she is and will be in her career. It was such a unique tone, as always, but even more beautiful than anything she’s done in the competition so far because of the personal nature of the lyrics. Truly stunning, and I’m glad the judges decided to keep her around, even if I don’t think she’ll be getting the votes due to her slightly underwhelming edit thus far. RESULT: Judges’ Save.

3. Elli Rowe-  Lionel proved tonight why he’s my least favorite judge. He said that too many people are in Elli’s lane, and all I had to think of was… who???? Who else is in the haunting, chilling, soft, quiet magic lane? Nobody but Elli. It’s such a shame because this was another terrific performance and showed why Elli is so special and the ONLY one in her lane. This was the robbery of the night, and in an underwhelming night overall, it’s even more surprising that Elli didn’t make it through by the judges’ choice. RESULT: Eliminated.

2. Fritz Hager- Fritz is becoming more and more comfortable as this goes along, and here, I felt like I was watching an actual winner performing in a concert of his own. Loved this performance and fully think Fritz can win if he keeps doing this type of thing. This was awesome. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

1. Christian Guardino- Christian absolutely SLAYED this rendition of “Creep.” We’ve heard this song so many times, and he probably brought my favorite rendition of it to the stage that I’ve seen in a long time (maybe since Jena Irene). It was emotional, soulful, and flat out brilliant. Best of the night by a narrow margin. RESULT: Voted Through by America.

So next week, it looks like we’ll be losing 3 of our top 14, and it’s safe to assume that the ones who needed the judges’ save are in the most danger, right? Not necessarily because I still think people like Tristen and Jay have been such huge presences this season that I could see them squeaking in over people like Dan, Ava, or even Lady K (especially considering the performances themselves). I do still think Mike and Allegra may be in some danger because they are more of the judges’ darlings more so than America’s. Everyone else who was safe last week will likely be safe yet again since we’ve been given no reason to expect otherwise.

PREDICTIONS:

Going Into Top 11- Nicolina, Christian Guardino, HunterGirl, Fritz Hager, Leah Marlene, Noah Thompson, Emyrson Flora, Lady K, Ava Maybee, Jay Copeland, and Tristen Gressett

Going Home- Mike Parker, Allegra Miles, and Dan Marshall
