I have a conundrum

Jun 17, 2024 by mathboy9
that I would like to crowdsource advice on and I'm not going to ask Reddit so here I am writing everything out if anybody wants to chime in. first off i accepted a government job starting in a few weeks that im really excited about and gives me the financial freedom to live on my own (YAYYYY). i only have to go into the office 2-3 times a week + its about a 40 minute drive from where i live currently with my mother but i dont have my license which complicates things. i have the option to move into a complex thats walking distance from my work but its $1300/mo for a studio which is pushing it (also not a super walkable area but there is bus service). i also could live downtown in a very walkable area with more things to do + nightlife for ~$1000/mo and be a ~30 minute bus ride away from my work but the city is run down & the crime is spiking - im not one to buy into high crime narratives but there are several recent unsolved homicides + an unprovoked lgbt hate crime happened like 2 days ago and this is a SMALL city. the other option would be to live at home learn to drive quick and pocket that rent money but my family doesnt think i can handle driving on the highway (?????) even if i do get my license and is really encouraging me to move out.

thank u if you actually read this mua mua

I think the process of learning how to drive, getting your license, and getting a car would take a long time. Then once you start working you鈥檒l have to drive 40 minutes at rush hour as a new driver which would be really scary. I think the $1300 studio near work is the best option but you can still work on learning how to drive at your own pace since it鈥檚 not a walkable area.

Honestly id just go for it, you wont be tied to any place permanently, if its not working for you after a few months go back to the drawing board and try a new option ygm?
I guarantee you once youve got that personal space you wont want to go back 馃槀

survivorfan12 yeah i get really really scared on the road bc of an incident i have as a kid so i think it would take me longer to get acclimated. i can borrow my grandmothers car and pay her for it since she rarely drives but it is seeming like more trouble than its worth
captainzacsparrow yess true true ive never lived on my own without roommates so it would be a great opportunity

I DO think you should learn how to drive, but as Survivorfan12 said, this may take quite a while. This especially if you don't have your drivers permit yet, which requires lots of supervised driving time. But, put that one on your radar for the future.

For me, personally, if I were in your situation, i'd go with the walkable option with good bus service. 1300 a month may be steep, but if its well within your affordability range, then its a good option. Long commutes suck (imo), and being able to walk to work is a great option. Unless theres any particular reason you want downtown, id go with the 1300 a month.

mathboy9 honestly the peace you develop when you have your own space is unparalleled. I agree eith zachbbs and survivorfan12 too put driving on your radar for sure, itll open more and better options for you in the long run, and the 1300 studio doesnt sound to bad, if you get the security and safety you be lacking in the 1000 a month, and a better travel system it sounds like the extra 300 a month would be well worth it!

Regardless of what you choose to do i hope it works out perfectly for you ^_^

zachbbs my permit literally expired like 4 months ago im still mad about it because i forgot it was expiring oops. i didnt need to drive before because i lived in nyc for college but now that im locked down here i might as well! i agree with you though - i was just questioning it because the price seems inflated but it is within my budget. the reason i'd choose downtown is to make friends and walk to restaurants but also what type of friends am i gonna find at the gay club?? ive been there a couple times and its messy as hell lmfaoo

PRIORITIZE PRIORITIZE PRIORITIZE DRIVING. That is such a fundamental part of living right now, like you need to get your license ASAP. Driving down a highway is fine your family is just kinda stupid LMAO
