Julian's Music Taste 2 - Round 4 Results

Jun 4, 2022 by Thnksfrthmmrs
I finished this last night but then work got super busy, so now here we are

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#UsernameThatWasFree: Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero
I love Bonnie Tyler! I love just how hard she goes on every one of her tracks, of course helped out by the production of the fantastic Jim Steinman (RIP.) Even though the concept of this is kinda basic, I don’t care, she just SELLS this. Bonnie Tyler has such a fantastic voice, and she puts it to good use on this as she just belts out as hard as she can for a man to come and save her from whatever situation she has going on. I love it!

#LaCroix: Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
Yeah, this is a pretty good song! I know that I’m not really the intended audience for this song, although I will say I have been getting a lot more into Cyndi Lauper as of late so this was a good pick for me. Girls do just be wanting to have fun tho. Not my top pick for one of her songs, but still a pretty great song which I do like quite a lot!

#Samsam: Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
I mean… It’s 80s Whitney. Of course this is gonna be awesome! I don’t really have much to say on this one, I Wanna Dance With Somebody is just plainly awesome. Whitney at her peak was untouchable, and this is up there as one of her best!

#Austino15fffan: Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth
There’s something so infectious about this song! That chorus is an earworm, it kinda just slams into you with all the force she can muster up behind it, and it comes in enough times to where you will absolutely have it stuck in your head afterwards! The verses, despite being pretty short, aren’t exactly slouches either. Plus that key change at the end is pretty great too. This song is fantastic!

#Booyahhayoob: Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Annie Lennox is the main singer on this so it counts! Anyway, this is a classic, of course. Annie Lennox has a fantastic voice and this duo was a match made in heaven. The production is tight and crisp and everything just blends together so nicely. This song is awesome, it’s a shame nobody’s ever covered it because I imagine a cover would be pretty great. Anyway, yeah I like this quite a lot.

#Spinfur: Taylor Dayne - Tell It To My Heart
This category is gonna be really hard to rank, huh? Here we have another banger, this time by Taylor Dayne. Her voice has this kinda smoky affect to it and is a bit grittier than some of the more polished voices above. None of that is a bad thing though, she still sounds great and this song is a whole lot of fun, if a bit generic in its content.

#Aidan0621: Tracy Chapman - Fast Car
I don’t think I could do a write-up of this song justice. Yes this song is from the 80s, but it would fit right in in pretty much any era of music. We need a song like this, a song that feels this universal and speaks to both old and modern sensibilities. A song about striking out and making a life for yourself, a song about change, a song about hope for the future. It’s beautiful. It’s transcendent. It’s a lot more understated than most songs on here, but there’s just something magical about this song.

#Vixens: Dolly Parton - 9 To 5
Hell yeah, changing it up a bit with some country! And one of the most well known and well loved country hits of that era too, if I’m not mistaken. This is a classic that I think we can all relate to to some degree, the workforce can be just a shitty time and it’s good that we have a song for all the 9 to 5ers out there on their grind, just trying to make it in this awful shithole of a world.

#Zeptis: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
Who doesn’t know and love this song? As a society we definitely needed at least one song in this lane, and Pat Benatar was the right woman for the job because this song kicks all of the ass. This song knows its core appeal and hits that niche as hard as it possibly can, like I can’t think of a better song for when you need to just put some asshole in his place. And, especially nowadays, that’s something I think we all can relate to.

#HeavyRain: The Go-Gos - Vacation
Something about this one just has never worked for me. I love a few of their other songs but this just feels like it’s trying to advertise to me. It does make me want to take a vacation, and then I remember the last time I took a proper vacation was 17 years ago (when I was TEN) and that that won’t be changing anytime soon. I feel like I’m listening to a commercial rather than a song every time I hear this, like I’m just waiting for the advertiser voice to pop in and tell me about how great some hotel is. Idk, I can hear the appeal of this but it just doesn’t do it for me, sorry!

#Lucas_RFS: Cyndi Lauper - True Colors
Truth be told… This song is kinda one of the reasons this took so long, because I just wanted to listen to this one over and over well before I actually got to it (and then I’d lose track of time and have to go to work with no progress made, lol.) This song is just gorgeous. This smacks me right upside the face with emotions I’m still trying to process. Without getting too into it, I’m still working on figuring out my “true colors” after having to suppress them for so long due to irl circumstances. It hit me in a very personal way that not a lot of other songs have been able to recently.  Also did I mention I just love Cyndi Lauper? She’s fantastic.

#MrRobzilla: Tina Turner - What’s Love Got To Do With It
Hey so uh, funny story. This is a song I’ve actively been listening to on my own time for the last few months before this! I rotate a lot of stuff in and out of my playlists due to whatever mood I’m in, and I do this thing where I only listen to a couple songs on repeat for a while, and this has been one lately. I love this song so goddamn much, of course Tina Turner’s voice is the main selling point here because, holy shit, she puts some POWER behind that thing. ESPECIALLY on the title line!

#Oswordo3: Tiffany - I Think We’re Alone Now
Yeah so… Coming back to this one is interesting. I was actually introduced to this song through the Green Day cover. Both versions have their strengths and weaknesses, I think I might give a slight edge to the cover but this version is pretty good too I think! It doesn’t slow down for a second like the other one, and the synth-y direction works well here. It’s got a locomotive energy to it, this just barrels into you with its energy and you better get on board or you’re about to get ran over!

#Txashaun: Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)
I’ve listened to this a couple times and it didn’t work for me. Coming into this, I really WANTED this song to work for me. This is the favorite song of one of my non-TG friends and I wanted to be able to hear what they hear. I like the lyrical conceit of this song, Kate Bush wanting God to swap her and her man’s places so her man could experience what it’s like to be a woman, what women go through. And yeah, I can absolutely see how that would fit into modern sensibilities for fairly obvious reasons. The beat is also pretty strong, another one I’d call locomotive. I’ve never seen an episode of Stranger Things in my life and likely never will, but this wasn’t bad!

#Turkeylover: Stacey Q - Two Of Hearts
So I was going through the first verse wondering where I had heard this before because it sounded familiar, and then the chorus/title line hit and it was… OHHHHHH YEAH THIS ONE. I like this one. There’s not a whole lot of complexity here, she’s fallen hard for some dude, but she sells it so convincingly. The whole thing comparing a two of hearts to “two hearts as one” is a super clever metaphor which I can very easily buy into, and her voice is softer yet still packs a punch where it needs to. I’m into it!

#SeongWoo: Chaka Khan - Ain’t Nobody
The Masked Singer has ruined this song for me. I can’t help the feeling that this song works so much better as a powerhouse ballad instead of this lil upbeat thing where her voice is kinda drowned out by the music on the verses. Yeah it slaps but this just isn’t the version of the song I’m going to listen to when I want to listen to this song, idk. It was fun revisiting this, because Chaka Khan is definitely talented, but idk this just didn’t hit for me the way I wanted it to.
