For this week’s top 10, I couldn’t think of many subjects. So, this time around I’ll just rank my top 10 superhero origin movies in inspiration of the introduction of so many great characters in Black Panther.
Honorable Mentions: Wonder Woman (her first appearance WAS Batman v. Superman, technically...right?); RoboCop; Ant-Man; Big Hero 6
10. Captain America: Civil War- It’s not an origin story in many people’s opinions, but this technically IS the origin of Spider-Man and Black Panther in the MCU, so I’m counting it. The Spider-Man scenes in this are my favorite scenes of the movie, so bravo for introducing Tom Holland in an excellent way.
9. Captain America: The First Avenger- Chris Evans is a really good Cap, and this is the first time we saw him in his suit. He is charismatic and gave us the true leader we all couldn’t wait to see, and has been a true leader for the Avengers ever since.
8. Deadpool- One of the most different, diverse origin stories ever made, but still an incredible take on the character. Ryan Reynolds was a hilarious casting choice, and really made the film come together. Not just in origin speakings, but stylistically, this film has it all.
7. Thor- The movie isn’t perfect, but it gave us two amazing origin stories in Thor and Loki, who have become two of the most dynamic characters of the MCU. Everything on Earth is meh, but the stuff in Asgard with Loki and Thor is just something great. I’m a fan.
6. Doctor Strange- I love Benedict Cumberbatch’s character. A Tony-Stark esque douchebag who finds his way after an injury and becomes something beyond what he ever imagined. Sure, it’s kind of a rehashing of Iron-Man, but the visuals here are what shape it into an amazing movie and make it stand on its own. I love the universe it built, and can’t wait to see how it fits in when Avengers: Infinity War comes around.
5. Iron-Man- Speaking of Iron Man, would we really have an MCU without him? It’s not my personal favorite MCU film, but it is uber important, as it wasn’t just the origin story of Tony Stark, but the origin story of the MCU period.
4. Superman- One of the original origin stories that really made the genre of Superhero films a landmark genre. It is a bit outdated now, but I still love it and appreciate it for being the thing that started it all, basically. Without this film, there wouldn’t be anything else on this list. So you have to give credit where credit is due, even if the film isn’t top 3 worthy.
3. The Incredibles- Yes, they’re superheroes. Yes, this is their origin story. And it is awesome.
2. Batman Begins- Who would have thought that Nolan’s Batman trilogy would become so worshiped and mesmerizing today? This was the first of the three films, and is filled with so many great directing choices that elevated the superhero genre, and gave us a very special Batman origin story.
1. Spider-Man- Sam Raimi’s original film is one of my personal favorite comic book films of all time. Tobey Maguire is fine in my opinion, and the relationships between he and the other characters are all complex and fleshed out, creating many layers that set the stage for the rest of the series. The main plus is the origin story here. It never feels boring or slow, and every piece of Peter Parker’s life is shown in such a great way, from being bitten by the spider, to Uncle Ben’s death, to the first time he climbed that brick wall. It’s a perfect origin story.
