New's Movie Taste S2 - ROUND 3 (RESULTS)

Feb 13, 2022 by NewNightmare7
Heyy!!! Welcome to Round 3 results!

I have to say this round was a tough one. There wasn't a film I actively disliked. I enjoyed them all so ultimately it comes down to which one I enjoyed the least.

The following contestants are SAFE:

JayElVeeIsBack - Twins (1988) - So i've come to realize I that I really enjoy opposites attract films. Its just a fun concept if its done well and I really enjoyed this movie. Arnold Schwarznegger and Danny DeVito are a match for stupidity and I love it. Its just dumb fun and sometimes thats all you need! Im surprised it wasn't really looked at that way upon release because I feel like this deserves some more praise. At least Roger Ebert enjoyed it! If I had any gripe it would probably be I'm not a big fan of the cinematography. It doesn't really stand out much but eh small complaint. Overall, a fun movie im glad I got to watch!

Thirteen - The Lords of Salem (2013) - So Rob Zombie is interesting to me. I feel like you either love his style or will never get on board with it and for me, I enjoy his style although it is hard to watch sometimes and I need to be in the right mood for it. This is definitely the most subtle movie I have seen of his which says alot. Something I really like is the dialogue and character development is pretty consistently good. Normally his movies are just full of awful characters and dialogue (which is entertaining) but its nice to see a change. This movie is pretty contained and solid. I don't know if it'd be my favourite Rob Zombie movie but it's definitely up there (probably number 2) so yeah!

Booyahhayoob - Home Alone 2 (1992) - So i've never been entirely familiar with these movies. I never really watched them as a kid but the one time I have seen the first two I remember really enjoying them! Rewatching it, I don't have the same fondness but I still respect the movie even though it is almost beat for beat and alot of the respect comes to Tim Curry who is phenomenal in this movie. I absolutely adore him. Plus, the formula is good that I totally understand wanting to redo it. There is alot to enjoy and overall I like it, it just kind of slogs as a result. I actually found the 3rd one a little more entertaining because it was just so batshit bonkers. Anyways, has some stale qualities but overall I have a good time watching!

Congrats on making it to round 4! Now onto the TOP 3:

NanoNerd - Eternals (2021) - When the trailer came out for this movie I was very excited based on the cinematography alone and then when it came out, it had pretty poor reviews and I still went in with high hopes and had an awful theatre experience...so I left like 10 minutes in and saw it the next day and loved the movie! I don't get the negativity towards it. It is nowhere near the worst MCU movie as everyone is saying. The cast is really good, particularily Angelina Jolie, Lauren Riddlof and Barry Keoghan. The cinematography is absolutely gorgeous! And I just had a good time watching it! Honestly this could be one of my favourite MCU movies im not sure im currently rewatching them all with a friend so we'll see but for now, great movie and quite relevant!

Voila - Riding in Cars with Boys (2001) - Uhm this is an interesting title. Also, Drew Barrymore as a 26 year old playing a 15 year old at times is a choice. I loved this movie. I love how it starts where alot of it is used for situational comedy (which I tend to really enjoy) and I like how it gets more cold and disheartening as it goes along. Drew Barrymore and Steve Zahn and phenomenal! Brittany Murphy is great as well I really enjoyed all the back and forth they get as the film progresses. I also like the self discovery journey that Bev is pretty much forced to go on. There are so many toxic relationship aspects in her life that causes her to try to live through her son as a result and its really well done in a narrative structure. Overall, there is alot to appreciate and im really surprised that it didn't fair that well. I hope this movie gets praised more in the future.

CarolinaSteele - Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End (2007) - So as you are aware I had not seen any of these movies. I tried to watch the first one as a kid but I passed out and I never revisited it. I was extremely skeptical going in because of said thing but because I mentally can't cope with watching a third movie in a series without the rest, I watched the whole trilogy but shall only give my thoughts on the third movie. So I think by watching the first two it makes this movie more rewarding and brings better closure to me and I loved this movie. Firstly, I wanna give praise to Naomie Harris for absolutely stealing every scene she is in and I adore her. Next, Keira Nightly is a goddess. This movie has great build up and off and im surprised this and Dead Man's Chest are not as praised as they should be. Is this my favourite PotC movie? Im not sure but I can't deny this is an epic conclusion to this trilogy.

And the winner of round 3 is...

Voila! Congrats!
NanoNerd & CarolinaSteele will recieve HIGH placements!

Onto our BOTTOM 2:

Iindsay - Hocus Pocus (1993) Honestly I'm a little surprised to see this in the bottom 2. I found this movie on 4K a week before you submitted so great timing! For Disney, this movie gets away with alot and I am shook! Killing kids, requiring virgins, talking about boobs and a creepy as fuck Bus Driver like omg! I do think that it takes a little too long setting up the movie and trying to develop the characters when it could have had the scenes before the trick or treating (after the prologue) cut and still served the same purpose. When the witches return though the movie picks up tremendously and that comes to the 3 witches themselves. They are played very well and are the heart of the movie. I dont really find the protaganist characters all that investing except for Binx but the witches make up for it. I think overall, there is alot to appreciate and it is entertaining from an adult lense knowing all the stuff they got away with but it does have some pacing issues so I don't know if i'd revisit it.

Tanarexix - The Butterfly Effect (2004) - Oh my god this movie is so depressing! Ashton Kutcher does a great job in this movie and the concept is really cool (albeit pretty flawed in the grand scheme). It has a little bit of a 2000's gloss which as a style is not something that holds up and can sour the film in terms of investment at least for me. The film also is choppy in terms of its pace and storytelling but aside from that aspect this is a pretty solid film and one I never intend to revisit but respect the film no less. I really like the way it plays with timelines and like none of them are good. The stuff with the characters as kids is constantly brutal and sad like damn! So yeah all in all pretty solid!

I’m happy you loved Eternals too! I also don’t get why people hate it so much. It’s not the best Marvel movie I’ve seen, but it’s definitely nowhere near the worst either!

Yesss Ridiing in Cars with Boys is one of my all time faves. I think it has few flaws except for it might bounce from scene to scene and time just passes really fast in the movie but it’s well done
