New's Movie Taste S2 - ROUND 2 (RESULTS)

Feb 7, 2022 by NewNightmare7
Welcome to the results!

The following people are SAFE:

Thirteen - Night of the Living Dead (1968) - I actually wasn't expecting this although I should have. Its a movie that has been analyzed to death so my words will have no impact on it at all except I agree with it. Through everything they were going through at the time of filming/release they made one of the most important films in history. Does it hold up entertainment wise? I think so. I particularily love the basement scene with the daughter. The score is just weird and it elevates it alot. Overall, while I like Dawn of the Dead probably a bit more, for a debut, it'll be difficult to get better than a film that changed film.

NanoNerd - Shaun of the Dead (2004) - Hmm. Im a little conflicted cause I absolutely love this movie. Its amazing and every single thing works but on the other hand, I feel as though this was a cop out choice because of how successful you were in the first round. I can't fault you because Edgar Wright is fucking great but I don't want you to ride on that success so this your warning for the future <3

Tanarexix - The Cabin in the Woods (2012) - So I remember enjoying this when I first watched it but it didn't really stand out to me much. On a rewatch I really enjoyed it! I noticed that the pace is really good and flows well. Its not a movie that needs to be longer than it is and it does not overstay its welcome. I also love the idea of 9 year old Japaneese girls just singing their way to victory like they are icons. I think my main gripe is the ending and how frustrating it is. I get wanting to live and stuff but realizing the world is going to end and they just wanna be selfish, naw it undermines the character development. Other than that its a pretty solid movie!

Booyahhayoob - Memento (2000) - I love the way Christopher Nolan plays with time in his films. Its a weird obsession that creates alot of interesting narrative structures and this movie has arguably his most interesting structure. I love the idea of forward but chromologically reversed storytelling and what makes it work here is that even though the ending was shown to us first, its uncovering why that happened what makes it cool. After seeing this a first time a while ago I was expecting to not really enjoy it all that much knowing the story but it still holds up well from all standpoints. It's like a lightning in a bottle film so go Christopher Nolan!

Congrats on making it to round 3! Now onto our TOP 3:

CarolinaSteele - Get Out (2017) - Interesting to see both NotLD and this movie together. Makes a pretty great double feature! So im gonna go on a quick rant first about how I hate public opinions on anything getting alot of recognition. I hate the way once a film or anything like that gets alot of praise it then becomes overrated like no thank you. Most of the time its praised for a reason so...anyways, if you can't tell by that rant I really enjoy this movie. This is another movie that could be analyzed for years to come so my words dont have much impact but I find this movie very entertaining. The way its shot, the performances (particularily Chris Kaluuya and Alison Williams) are so good and its a really good set-up and payoff movie. I love this movie and its a great debut (im so excited for his 3rd film omg).

JayElVeeIsBack - Dawn of the Dead (2004) - Omg all the zombies I can't!!! Actually I can cause I love zombies and I love this movie. Im not a big Zack Snyder fan but I man I love the way he directs this movie. I love fast zombies, they feel more threatening and the style works for me. I think a large part of it comes from James Gunn's writing so pop off! I said in NotLD that I find Dawn of the Dead superior but I also find the remake better? Objectively no but entertainment wise, definitely.

Iindsay - Hereditary (2018) - Oh this movie fucked me up. I came back from a camping trip really sunburnt and my friends were like "lets go to Hereditary" and we went to a late show and it scared us so much. My friends were laughing to cope which i thought was great. I really like this movie. The way it deals with grief is so heartbreaking but so convincing and fucking Toni Collette should have won an oscar and im still pissed she didn't. Anyways, the score and the tension building in particular is really well done. I love how explosive it gets at the end because it earns it. Great payoff and overall a great movie!

JayElVeeIsBack Iindsay will recieve HIGH placements!

Now onto our BOTTOM 2:

Voila - All the Right Moves (1983) - The only knowledge I had of this movie going in was when Rose McGowan talked about it for a brief second in Scream. I'll start with my positives. The cinematography is really good! Craig T. Nelson is pretty good in his role and the overall tone and themes work for the movie. My issues come from personal enjoyment mostly. Like Risky Buisness in the last season I don't find this movie particularily accessible to me and I wasn't really enjoying the experience all that much. I also think Lea Thompson is not that good in this movie. She seems like she doesn't wanna be there (which I then found out was true so werk). So while it has qualities that are good and would work for other people, it doesnt really vibe for moi sadly.

Lifeiscool - The Maze Runner (2014) - Hmm this movie didnt really do much for me. I figured going into this that this would be a showcase for the whole series and since its the only credit the director has, im a little displeased with it. I dont know, I feel like I missed it in the time when I probably would have enjoyed it more. It does have some good acting, particularily from Thomas Brodie-Sangster and the cinematography is good for the most part but aside from the interesting concept, it doesn't keep me engaged.

eeeek!!! I'm glad you liked it! Though with a movie as fantastic as this, it's hard not to at least appreciate the intricacies of it
