Well, well, well! Your first week breaking out of the "Safe" category and it was with this very solid submission. For similar reasons, this song has had a special place in my heart since the first time I heard it, and, even if I'm not a huge fan of Capaldi himself, this song will always be special to me. This was an extremely strong submission for this week.
Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of Ben Platt (I think he's overhyped and I'm not a fan of "Dear Evan Hansen", which in my music program, everyone else seems to be). However, this song was... really good! I had never heard it before this, but I fell in love with the song on first hearing and it's been stuck on my head. Even though you've just been "Safe" most rounds, you've been doing an outstanding job of picking songs that really are out of the box, and this one got you in the top three.
You thought you'd be eliminated for this? Ha! This was actually a wonderful submission. I had not heard this song before, but this definitely evoked feelings of sadness which is really what I was looking for. I wanted to be moved and to be sad and this song put me in the state. I really want to look into more of her music because this was outstanding, very well done.

Becca, this was your week!! I really hoping for a solid Mayday Parade or other song more in your genre for this week. "Fix You" is an okay song once I skip past the first 30 seconds, but the song has kind of become a meme with the "when you try your best but you don't succeed" part. It's not a bad song, but I really was just hoping for much more from you this week!!
So this week was another stumble for you, unfortunately. This song kind of feels like a Lizzy Grant-era Lana Del Rey track, but doesn't really feel sad or evoke any emotion, it was just more of a boring submission for me. You've sent better songs before and unfortunately, this wasn't a week where you can afford to slip up a little without ending up in the bottom. I was hoping that after your success with "Control" in Round 1, that you'd be able to dig deep again, but unfortunately, this just fell flat.
So this song was actually not bad, I was enjoying most of it, but as we hit the second verse is where the problems of this song arose for me. Justin had a genuinely emotional song going for a bit, but then, decides to kind of sour on that and make it this "pity me and my rockstar life" jam, and it was just extremely cynical in not the best way, and I went from feeling genuine sadness to annoyance. I think this song really could have been great, and I'd love to hear a version with out that, and it would probably be better.
Christian, I'm sorry to see you go! You've had an interesting ride so far, but unfortunately, this song just wasn't going to cut it this week. You've shared some really great jams, and had some flops, but this time you just weren't able to stay afloat. #Kevin0621 and #beccajo16, you're safe, I'll see y'all next round.
