Patrick's Song Contest - Final Round

Dec 20, 2020 by GrrrImABear
Welcome to the Final Round of Patrick's Song Contest! You three have survived 13 rounds of eliminations with a great mix of categories, so I thought this would be the perfect time to give you THREE categories that you have to submit for to try and win this Song Contest.

Category #1 - SENTIMENTAL VALUE

As we know, music can be very emotional and a lot of our memories and feelings can be tied and reflected to the music that we listen to. For this first category, I want you to submit a song that you have a personal tie to that means a lot to you.

Category #2 - UNDERAPPRECIATED SONGS

Not all songs get as big as we expect them or think that they should be, so for this category, I want you to select a song that you think is underappreciated. This is a pretty general category, as you could go with a song by an artist that you just think is one of their best that is underappreciated, or a song that did get big that you don't think got enough credit for how good the song was. The world is your oyster.

Category #3 - SONGS FOR PATTY

As you've been in this competition and seen how certain songs have faired, I want you to submit ANY song that you think I would like based on the music taste of the competition and the results/feedback up to this point. I just want to see if you've picked up on any critiques or learned anything about what I like.

For this finale, I will be giving each submission a rating out of 10, and after all 3 categories are tabulated, the individual with the highest point total will WIN Patrick's Song Contest.

The deadline will be for 24 hours from this blog to get your submissions in. As per usual, post them in the comments below along with any explanation/comments (such as why you have sentimental value to the song, why you think it's underappreciated, or why you think I would like it). Best of luck, everyone!

SENTINMENTAL VALUE: A Long Walk - Jill Scott

My music taste is pretty varied. While there are definitely some styles that I gravitate toward, I admire and respect good music no matter the genre. A large part of that comes from my dad who views music in a similar way. "A Long Walk" came out in 2000 when I was 5 years old and is one of the first songs I have a vivid memory of listening to. For the longest time, this was my dad's favorite song to cook to. Every time he would play this song, my sisters and I would run into the kitchen, and we would all sing along and jam out. Hearing this song always brings me back to those childhood jam sessions in my parents' kitchen and makes me think of my dad and all the positive influences he brought into my life.

UNDERAPPRECIATED SONGS: O Holy Night - Mariah Carey

Is Mariah Carey underappreciated? Absolutely not! She's a legend for good reason. But when people think of Mariah's Christmas songs, most people think of "All I Want for Christmas is You" or "Oh Santa" (especially with the new collaboration with Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande). I LOVE Christmas music. This arrangement is not only Mariah's best Christmas song, but it's also my favorite Christmas song. This song is an underappreciated Mariah song and an underappreciated Christmas song. Since we are four days away from Christmas, I think this underappreciated gem is a fitting submission.

SONGS FOR PATTY: The Chain - Fleetwood Mac

I generally try not to repeat artists when I play these music games, but when you shared your thoughts on Rumours, I couldn't help myself. I love this song, and think there are so many things about this song you probably love as well. Lindsay, Stevie, and Christine absolutely nail those harmonies. The band absolutely plays the mess out of those instruments especially Lindsay's killer solo and John McVie's iconic bass riff. There is just so much emotion in this song, and the musical journey they take you is one for the ages.

Thanks for letting me play. This was such a fun music game and definitely one of my favorites.

Category 1: Sentimental Value

Last time I will repeat an artist in this contest, but BANKS is easily my favorite artist of all time. So many of her songs have sentimental value to me, especially her slower tracks. Her voice is so powerful yet delicate at the same time, similar to the Dua entry last week, I can just hear the raw emotion in her voice. "If We Were Made of Water" describes the dynamics of a failed relationship. Often times, we can fall in love with people that we know we're not compatible with. It's sentimental to me because I can draw parallels with the lyrics in this song and the relationship I had with my last ex. There were a few BANKS songs I could include for this category tbh, but I just love this one the most I think.

Category 2: Underrated

CXLOE is extremely underrated, I don't really know many others who know about her. You seemed to enjoy the Tove Lo song I sent during the opposites round, and this song shares the same theme of highlighting the darker and more dangerous side to drug use. The song's title, "12 Steps" gets its name from the 12 steps of recovery in Alcoholics Anonymous. I love this song from CXLOE because the lyrics are not only informative, but the actual song is really upbeat and catchy. The dichotomy between the song's fun and energetic dance beat and the dark and depressing lyrics is one I find fascinating, and even if I ignored the lyrics and pretended she was singing about something more positive, at the end of the day I'm bopping along.

Song 3: Songs for Patty

I find this song to be very fitting as a song to go out with, as Rina Sawayama sings about achieving great things beyond what she feels like she's destined for, but I also think you would like this song as well. You seem to love song's with very striking voices, which is what I attest to why you loved Dua Lipa so much. You gave me negative marks for Charli XCX's voice (which I admit her vocal delivery isn't for everyone), so first and foremost I wanted to get a song where you can really hear a vocalist PERFORM. Rina's vocals are super clear and impactful in this song, and as the song progresses, you can feel the buildup of emotion. That last chorus is just... *chef's kiss*

Thanks for having me, I had a lot of fun!

Sentimental:

Loving Kate Bush introduced me to most of my favorite artists today, like Grimes.

Underrated:

Kylie is known for her pop songs, but during the early/late 90s she went really experimental with some of her sounds, and produced Confide in Me, which imo is one of if not her best singles, and one that can stand with her greatest pop hits. It showcases her vocals and lyricism at its best, and while the album it was on didn't do as well as most of her previous work, this song still GOBBLES.

For Patty:
