I know. It's astonishing how much harassment is taken seriously in the real world, yet nobody really cares on Tengaged. :S I think mods need to be more proactive when it comes to this offense, but mehhhhhhh.
The truth is that a lot of victims either don't report it at all or they report it without proof or clarification.
A one-day ban is not enough to cover for the constant harassment, is it?
While porn could lead to police involvement with the website, this unbanned harassment could lead to...something terrible.
So I understand where you're coming from, but this is very difficult to judge.
Think about the fakers who could get victims banned by manipulating chatlogs. :/
GothicZebra I see your point especially when it is simply one sided. However, a large amount of harassment on this site is two fold. You have both people playing victim and bully. Therefore, it is really hard to ban them... cause neither of them will report each other cause they are both at fault. However, recently I have seen a large number of instances when it is one person bullying the other. You are right it is horrible that it is impossible for anyone to do anything about it.
Insanity Remember Tengaged Court?
Group forums where you could report people.
We could publicly see some of the bullshit people were using to try and ban others.
While some verbal abuse severely hurts some, others are okay with those words. So each case is subjective and based on the victim's reaction to it, correct?
What if someone got emotional over being negged in games and blogs? It doesn't affect the majority, but this one person can't handle it, yet loves the website.
What should a mod do?
Yoshitomi I agree it needs proof but there's clear examples it on Tengaged. Simply look at one of the recent comments in my survivor tribe. I have never said anything derogatory to that person but I believe that comment is harsh and upsetting and it's not the first occurrence from him either... However, this blog isn't even about that, it's about what I've heard constantly from other people who've suffered a lot more and have attempted to talk with mods or Tengaged_Moderation with no prevail.
I'm not encouraging skype convos to be taken into consideration im purely talking Tengaged related here...
Also I never condoned a 1 day ban... I simply said from all the harassment people receive the offender won't even get banned for a day to emphasise my point. I don't think it's difficult to judge - simply only consider Tengaged Evidence and it's blatant I think.
Yoshitomi Exactly a lot of cases arnt cut and dry. Furthermore, this is not these mods jobs. They have real life jobs they have to do. I think Randomize should replace some of the bias ones... but it is impossible for a handful of non payed mods to review evidence and ban people as much as needed.
koolness234 How hard is it if a victim reports someone saying they're offended/upset over something someone has been doing on a constant basis. With supporting evidence and links to where it has happened on Tengaged... There's clear evidence and the person made it clear they're upset. That's a mods job to review things, if they don't want to do that they shouldn't really be doing what they're doing, it's not like they are forced to search for the information themselves.
GothicZebra That comment is a very specific and rare one. Most cases are never one person acting out. They are almost always two sided even with Tengaged evidence. I have never seen a case of someone not retaliating... and as soon as any type of retaliation occurs the case becomes harder to judge. Furthermore you have Tengageders trying to abuse the system. They are going out of their way to find information on people to ban them. Taking any comment and blowing it out of proportion. Yes, there are some cases where people go over the top and should be punished and the mods do not take a logical stance on it. However, it is really hard to discern victim and bully in most situations.
GothicZebra What I am saying is both sides constantly harass each other. It isnt one person being victimized, it is both sides saying hurtful things. A mod cannot ban one person and not the other fairly in most cases. Which is why most cases go unresolved. The person in question could easily turn around and say... well they said something that offended me. Then the mod would have to ban both people or not ban anyone at all. Also, Mods receive many upon many upon many reports. They try to get around to them all. When I said this isnt their jobs, I was not implying they dont care. However, you cant assume the mods to spend copious amounts of time everyday reviewing Tengaged cases.
Koolness234 Well that is kind of not the situation I was talking about in the blog hence the talk about consequences in regard to unprovoked harassment. I think it happens a lot more than people actually think. However, I know that two sided abuse is an a lot more frequent occurrence however I wasn't referencing that :/
GothicZebra First of all, for harassment to hold up legally, there has to be no escape from it. In cases of real life cyber bullying victims are hit at it from all fronts. Emails, tweets, skype, hard mail, and physical emotional bullying. That is what it takes. If someone is having a problem with harassment on Tengaged. They can choose to filter their blogs mail. They will not have any contact with whatever they are saying. They dont even need to leave Tengaged for them to escape it. The only thing that point anyone could do is post nudes are pictures of them on another social media site, then Tengaged has no jurisdiction. Furthermore they posted their nudes to begin with which would make them and whoever is posting them a distributor of child pornography even if they are their own nudes. If someone was harassing me on Tengaged, I would just filter them. Furthermore any cases you might think are unprovoked harassment are most likely not the case. When talking to someone you know about their harassment, they are never going to give you the full story.
Koolness234 In New Zealand at least if you have several offensive messages through text messaging or whatever it is without response you can report it and they won't care whether or not you could have blocked them...
Also the thing is sure you can block them but when a comment is said the damage is done and blocking a person doesn't stop them from continuing to say things or doing it to someone else. Turning a blind eye isn't really a solution.
GothicZebra At the end of the day Robert we both have talked bad about people on a call together. I mean you have heard me say stuff about people, and I have heard you say stuff about people. Our comments can be taken as harassment to the people we were talking about if they heard them. Maybe the burden does not lie on Moderation, but lies on the hands of the users to raise the standards on how we all act. When every user is and does make negative constant toxic comments about other users on the site we are all to blame. None of us are are free of guilt. In real life teaching people how to properly ban people is not the smart way to go about things. Instead of fixing how we deal with things when they are bad, we should focus on fixing the root of the problem. Nobody can do that when we are all at fault for our words. Instead of proposing changes to Moderation, maybe we should propose changes to ourselves.
Filtering someone doesn't make the issue disappear. As someone who has been on BOTH sides of this issue, there's a lot of ways to get around filtering. Simply blog, and tag that person in it; if someone makes one the dumb blogs saying, "Tag a retard" or something, they'll tag me; talk to friends and get them on my side of the issue even to a point where THEY are the ones mailing/commenting on that person's blogs ect. Stay away from the blogs page? I've had people follow me into games just to get a reaction out of me.
Things aren't always black and white, and I think filtering should do more than just prevent them from commenting/mailing me.
DragonSlayer4u Loves you too gurl. Stick Yeah that's what I was saying, in that blocking doesn't solve the problem nor does that serve as a punishment for the offender. zimdelinvasor That's kind of what this blog is about because people report people in situations like this and nothing happens where as it really should in my opinion.
GothicZebra
Your heart is in the right place, but there are just too many people who abuse a good system.
You've got the extremes of people who report anything and everything, to people who are the bullies but portray themselves as victims.
Koolness234 I've agreed with everything you said above, except for your view on filtering.
Filtering does not do enough because Tengaged thrives on freedom of speech in public. Blog content/comments and public chat in games are open for anything.
It's pretty simple why there's so much of this crap...
Reality shows have drama> site where people pretend to be on reality shows> people obsessed enough to pretend they're on a reality show are going to be dramatic types, and people looking to start crap/anyone with enough time on their hands to play these games constantly are probably social outcasts who have been bullied in their own life and/or are insecure and take the results of their own issues out on other people > get a whole community full of these people and this happens.
um I have never in almost 3 years on tengaged had problems like this. I really don't thinl it's as wide spread of a problem as you're making out, it's just some people it continues to happen to over and over again gothiczebra
OMG. Dont take things so seriously on a website. Problem solved. If your insecure enough to be offended by someone on a computer millions of miles away, then you got issues and shouldn't be on a website where that kind of behavior is (understandably) not something in the moderators control. It should be the responsibility of the people on this site to be the bigger person walk away. Big Brother, Survivor, all these reality shows are entertainment, with the main focus being DRAMA. If you go to a website looking to get what you get out of watching the show, DRAMA should be expected. Shit happens. If it gets that bad, there are FILTERS, and you can always leave until things blow over. END RANT.
From what I know if someone's texting you harassment without provocation, yes you can get them reported, but if they message you through online based messaging systems that there's no way to prove it actually them using that account so they can pinpoint exactly who it is to get them in trouble
If you're (general you here) being harassed the quickest way to get it to stop is to ignore the harasser. If they don't get a reaction they lose interest. No blogs/comments /mails at all giving them a reaction.
And this:
" What if someone got emotional over being negged in games and blogs? It doesn't affect the majority, but this one person can't handle it, yet loves the website. What should a mod do?"
Is the most absurd thing I read on this blog. Negging someone in a game or blog is not harassment. If a person gets emotional over that, they need a break. For teals.
1. Cases are never cut and dry like you are making them. Mods on the whole are fairly smart, the reason you dont see so many bans is they are never completely one sided. Your friends are never going to tell you what they did wrong. In clear cut cases almost always there is a ban.
2. Harassment laws are different in America. The servers are located in America and we have a .com url. Regardless of how laws are in different countries it is completely irrelevant.
3. Harassment is subjective. You said earlier you were offended by a comment made in your Survivor. If that comment was made to me, Id laugh it off and think it was just a troll trying to bother me. The insult played on personal insecurities of yours, likewise something that attacks insecurities of mine will be viewed offensively, but you might not view it the same way. Bans on the site have to be hard fact, and when subjectivity is at play it makes it harder.
4. The filter suggestion was not my way of dealing with the problem. However you presented that the harassment was constant harassment. My logical thoughts were if this person is getting harassed constantly and so bad, why not filter them and then report it? If I was a mod and someone had just sat there and took it without filtering, I would come to the conclusion something else is not at hand.
5. Since harassment is subjective like you presented, any comments you make personally could warrant a ban. Then it would make it virtual impossible to say anything, cause the victim could say.... "Well I feel like it is harassment." This is where you get into a problem. Feel is a subjective word. As much as you want this to be clear cut, it isnt and will never be. Subjectivity makes everything hard.
6. Furthermore your porn comment was completely irrelevant to anything. They posted the nudes of themselves under-aged in the first place, which makes them a distributor of child pornography. In a court of law they both would be legally convicted of the same thing. Also if they arnt under-aged then what they post online is there fault and they assume full responsibility for posting them. Likewise, if a underaged person is foolish and stupid enough to post their nudes, then they should not be that surprise or mentally distraught when they resurface.
7. Lastly, I am not proposing people just grow up and deal with it. However, a large majority of users on this site run to Moderators just to get someone banned or all the time. In life people will make rude comments worse than ones on this site, and no one will think it is harassment. Homophobic terms which are bannable on this site, go unpunished in real life. However, the difference is the maturity of people. I was bullied and harassed in High School and millions are, never to the point where I considered suicide, which would call for action. Nobody on this site has considered suicide because of one user. Also I never felt like it was not safe. Nobody has felt not safe on this site because they remain on it despite the harassment.
Lol, bullying online and offline is just a natural thing IMO. I think it's just human nature and will never truly stop, no matter how many blogs and campaigns people create.
The sooner people realise that, the sooner they can learn to deal with abuse.
Um honestly this person in a castings kept saying i was being mean but then he was being so fucking passive aggressive and condescending and i ended up getting voted out because I didn't want to put up with it. People on tengaged take it too far on both levels
yea i feel like it's gotten worse lately cause of some people on the site (i won't call out any names) abused their right to report stuff so the mods started ignoring everyone cause of all the bullshit reports they received
Totally agree.. I mean people need to get over the fact that these are games where despite having a million friends you have to pick your own best route in order to get far in these games.. get over it say good game and move on with your life.. it doesn't mean they are bad people so don't bash them for it.. I know I made some moves to piss people off but it doesn't mean I wouldn't be on their side next time.. just move on cause it's just a game and people don't get it.. its not even like there's $500k up for grabs..
stick If someone blogs about you in an inappropriate way report the blog. If they follow you into games do not give them a reaction. I have dealt with weirdos on gmthis site before amd if you ignore them they go away. If you cannot handle people calling you names on a game site maybe you should leave.
I SO AGREE! I've played a casting with @DonnaLynn and all she does is insult people!!! Her words hurt everyone! She's also done a few castings and she complains about being evicted, but her words to other people are so harsh!!!! Learn how to be nice and maybe you can win Donna!
