Gay in the NFL

2ndMar 10, 2014 by Belmont
So my boss and I bond over sports, and even though I don't like football much I use my subscription of Sports Illustrated to learn about certain football things and chat with my boss about them since it's his favourite sport.

Michael Sam was on the most recent cover, and he will be the first openly gay player to enter the NFL, provided he gets drafted this season (he will). Michael came out in the media before the draft so as to be an open book, to tell the story that would break anyway in his own words, and so that he couldn't be accused of hiding anything had he not come out and that information was revealed months down the road.

I asked my very liberal and educated boss what he thought about Michael Sam. I was SHOCKED with his response. He basically said that whatever team drafts Michael Sam will have to create a separate locker room for him so that "the rights of heterosexual people aren't infringed upon." I asked him why he thought gay people don't have those same rights, and he says "If they're choosing to be gay, then they would make straight people uncomfortable in the locker room" Yes, he said CHOOSING. When I said that chances are there have already been many gay players in professional locker rooms, and even the hockey change room where my boss himself plays, without harming anyone, and dear boss said that it was different because nobody knew, and that if he did know there was a gay person in the locker room with him that he wouldn't like knowing someone was watching him. I told dear boss that it was pretty arrogant of him to think that just because he looks good in a suit that every gay man would automatically be all over him, in a sweaty smelly locker room nonetheless.

I'm a straight girl and I was offended by his comments. I ended the conversation by saying "It's not a choice" and we didn't see each other the rest of the day.

Today he took me into his office and said that he really thought about our conversation (honestly I just think he was afraid I would going around telling people he was homophobic) and that he decided he needed to have a more open mind. That made me happy :)

Then I put pictures of the Village People up in his office :)

I mean I sort if agree with him. I mean not to be rude or anything but I wouldn't want gay people in the same locker room as me just because for me it's weird. But yeah whatever good story :)

I wrote a satire on homophobic attitudes in sports.

Afraid to post it though just in case people think I'm being legit

I'm gay and when I put myself in someone Else's shoes my judgement of character becomes clearer, You are a straight female, if on a all girl sports league where a straight male was accepted in, would you be OK with him showering and sharing your locker room with you and the other girls? Or would it make you a little uncomfortable?

onemanarmy I totally see your point, and while I personally have no problem with unisex bathrooms and change rooms (like at my gym), this blog was kind of geared specifically to the NFL. And since gays are the in the sport before women are, at such a high professional level, I kept it on that topic.

IT IS A CHOICE TO BE GAY YOU MORON
IM A STRAIGHT DUDE AND I CHOOSE TO BE THAT WAY
and if gay people don't see that they're wrong, then they're going to hell
