something that has always fried my brain

is the use of "star" when the media describes someone who participated in a tv show, soup opera, film, etc. For example "Norman Reedus, The Walking Dead star, debuted this week as...".

Do they use "star" as in they were an outstanding character or simply as in they STARRED the tv show (participated/participant could be a synonym)

Because american media tends to use the term "star" very loosely to refer to reality tv participants that hardly had an impact in said program/movie but still refered to them as "star". Is my question valid?

Can someone give me an answer?
