Austin Decides Emmy Awards #20 Sep 20, 2015
Since I have a passionate love for television, every year I create my own version of the Emmy awards (where the nominations should replace the legit ones). In this blog series, I will post one category daily and review it. I'll announce my nominations and then my winner.

The twentieth and final category is Drama Series. Throughout the last TV season, there were some good new dramas. But, it was the returning dramas that were the best. This category is tough because every show in the category is amazing. So, I had to pick the show that was most consistent with great acting, writing, directing, and more.

My nominees are:

The Americans
Game Of Thrones
Justified
Mad Men
Orange Is The New Black
Rectify
The Walking Dead

And the winner is...

Orange Is the New Black! The second season of Orange Is the New Black was phenomenal. I remember that coming into this season, a lot of the critics predicted that OITNB would be affected by the sophomore slump. However, that was not the case with new characters, new backstorys, and new dynamics that the show managed to put in place. The strongest thing about OITNB is the way that it humanizes the inmates. One great change from the shift from season one to two was that there is a narrowed focus on Piper, the lead character. The other characters get chances to shine more often and they took them. Another great thing about this season was Vee. Vee came into this season and then shit hit the fan. There weren't any weak episodes in the season and you can thank the huge ensemble for that. No matter who leaves Litchfield - there will always be stories to tell.

The nineteenth category is Comedy Series. The Emmy's are tomorrow. The remaining categories are the series ones that everyone has been waiting for! There were so many great comedy shows this year. The academy nominated 4 of these series for Emmy's this year (which is better than usual). All of these shows had great seasons. It was hard to pick a winner, so I picked the show that made me laugh the most. :)

My nominees are:

Broad City
The Comeback
Jane The Virgin
Parks & Recreation
Transparent
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Veep

And the winner is...

Broad City! Broad City is hilarious. It's also the most underrated comedy on television. The comedic duo of Abbi and Ilana are iconic due to their insanely amazing friendship. The show isn't about much, but it really doesn't need to be. This show is great at finding the craziest scenarios and making them believable. Some of those stories this season included an encounter with Kelly Ripa, a over-the-top dog wedding, their friend who secretly did porn, and last but not least a hilarious cringeworthy episode about pegging. For everyone who hasn't seen this show - I urge you to watch it.

The eighteenth category is Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. There's a reason why I left the comedy actress category for last. I purposefully left this category last because the nominees are amazing and the winner of this category gave the best performance of the year (in my opinion).

My nominees are:

Abbi Jacobson as Abbi Abrams – Broad City
Ellie Kemper as Kimmy Schmidt – Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish – The Comeback
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as President Selina Meyer – Veep
Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope – Parks and Recreation
Amy Schumer as Various Characters – Inside Amy Schumer

And the winner is...

Lisa Kudrow as Valerie Cherish from The Comeback! I said it and I'll say it again - Lisa Kudrow gave the best performance of the year for her work on the second season of The Comeback. For those who don't know of the show, Kudrow plays Valerie Cherish who is an aging actress that played a character on a "hit" '90s sitcom. She will do anything to become famous again. When she lands a role on a new HBO show playing Mallory Church (a character that's based on her and that does not show her in a good light whatsoever), it's apparent that she may become a star - but it might risk everything and everyone. Her range of emotions displayed throughout the season were astonishing. People may love Lisa Kudrow for her performance of Phoebe on Friends. However, her career best performance was on the last season of The Comeback. Anyone who disagrees with me hasn't seen the show.

Also, the rest of the nominees in this category are all queens. :)

The seventeenth category is Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The drama actresses this year all did fantastic jobs. DISCLAIMER: only one can win. From Cookie Lyon to Norma Bates, the characters this year were full of big personalities. However, I think the greatest moments were when the viewer got to see behind the big personalities and find out who the characters truly are. I had a pretty clear winner for this category before today, but when I look back I don't even know whose performance was the best because they are all great. But, I do think that one actress edged out the others.

My nominees are:

Olivia Colman as Ellie Miller – Broadchurch
Vera Farmiga as Norma Louise Bates – Bates Motel
Eva Green as Vanessa Ives – Penny Dreadful
Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Lyon – Empire
Tatiana Maslany as Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Helena, Rachel, and Krystal – Orphan Black
Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman – Orange Is The New Black

And the winner is...

Tatiana Maslany as Sarah Manning, Alison Hendrix, Cosima Niehaus, Helena, Rachel, and Krystal from Orphan Black! If you just read the last sentence, I think you would have picked up on this isn't your average show... Orphan Black is about clones. I've been a champion of the series since the beginning, and I still am urging people to watch this show. Maslany's performance is phenomenal. As a viewer, it's hard to tell that she could possibly be 1 person. With the way she draws out the characters, the viewer could be easily persuaded that she is secretly a sextuplet. However, she's not. She's a powerhouse that puts a lot of effort into the show and her performance. I'm so excited that Maslany finally got an actual Emmy nomination this year. Let's hope that she gets her deserved win.

The sixteenth category is Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Before this year, I wasn't watching many prestigious dramas on television. I knew this had to be changed and the nominees I have is the result of me discovered great dramas on television.

My nominees are:

Jon Hamm as Don Draper – Mad Men
Freddie Highmore as Norman Bates - Bates Motel
Bob Odenkirk as Jimmy McGill – Better Call Saul
Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens – Justified
Matthew Rhys as Philip Jennings – The Americans
Aden Young as Daniel Holden – Rectify

And the winner is...

Jon Hamm as Don Draper from Mad Men! I don't know what to say other than Don Draper is one of the most iconic characters on television. He is the classic anti-hero type. Jon Hamm's influential performance has led to many more anti-heroes on television. I would only classify one or two people on this list as an actual hero. Also, his work on this season of Mad Men was brilliant (although I mean all of it should have aired LAST year but AMC wanted to space it out because of Breaking Bad's high level of Emmy buzz). Hamm is a truly great actor and he can do it all.

The fifteenth category is Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. This year's category is great. Last year, I would have had 3 of the same nominees, but the other 3 are new and really give the category a lot of flavor. I love every single actor in this category and I don't think there is a weak person in this bunch.

My nominees are:

Louis C.K. as Himself – Louie
Will Forte as Phil Miller – The Last Man On Earth
William H. Macy as Frank Gallagher – Shameless
Chris Messina as Dr. Danny Castellano – The Mindy Project
Thomas Middleditch as Richard – Silicon Valley
Jeffrey Tambor as Maura Pfefferman – Transparent

And the winner is...

Thomas Middleditch as Richard Hendrix from Silicon Valley! Coming into this year's season of Silicon Valley, I didn't have high expectations. Many people loved the first season, but I just didn't find it to be very funny. However, I realized why people liked this show during the second season through Richard's performance. Richard is a true nerd. He's not The Big Bang Theory Sheldon type of nerd. His performance makes him a BELIEVABLE person. The many layers that Richard has to his character is vaster than I expected. The way he acts is cringeworthy but enjoyable. I think that the show simply wouldn't be as good if Thomas Middleditch wasn't a part of it. I can't wait for the next season.
