Two Ways of Playing

Nov 4, 2012 by Stearns
I guess there are two ways of playing this.

The first is competitive, the second is cooperative.  In the first, you play to show off and do what it takes behind the scenes to win.  This form is opportunistic, manipulative, conniving, and ultimately defeats the value of playing in the first place since only those with insider information and connections are fated to succeed.

In the second, you play to prove you're a good person and will make the world a better place.  This form is constructive, engaging, supporting, and imbues the value of playing since those who care can will themselves to success.

Most people play the first because the second seems naive, and is very difficult to execute.  It's also not always entertaining because it requires being considerate, but people like drama.  Drama is also funny in that it allows insensitive people to enjoy how sensitive people react.

The problem is sensitive people don't know better.  They go along with the first form because they're intimidated and bored from the lengthy emptiness of the game.  They don't realize how those who refuse to engage in politics get ruled by their inferiors.

Being honest and genuinely nice in the game gets you nowhere at the end of the day. So I try and play the game as much as possible but I'm also cutthroat when I need to.
