It's kind of sus that special education students behaved better than regular students at the high school I worked at. I scored $200 today (an extra $11 for being in the sped department).
It's really sad that the sped teacher is unable to teach at all due to being the only teacher at the school writing IEPs, having meetings all day, and being an aide because there are only 3 aides to help with 7th - 12th graders with needs. There needs to be a easier pathway for those who want to teach, but the exams and cost make it impossible...

I've been thinking of doing substitute teaching while applying to post grad programs next year.
I'll only have a bachelors in Biology (w/ minor in chemistry) at that time. Teaching is not something I intend on doing full time at all, especially as a career. I know you have a masters. Is this a possibility with a bachelors? Or do you think having the masters is what got you into this?

In order to be a substitute teacher in California, you need to pass the CBEST Exam (If you earned a B or higher in your Reading/Writing/Critical-Thinking/Math courses) You can waive that exam. I used Freshman English, Fundamentals of Speech, Critical-Thinking Composition (next class after English), and Statistics, You need to do a live scan/TB Test, have a bachelor's degree (for emergency be at junior with at least 90 units completed), and submit an application for a sub permit which cost $100.
California has the STRICTEST requirements for permits and teaching credentials, so your state may require less. It is 100% possible with a BA/BS degree in any subject just need to fulfill the requirements in your state. No grad school required or teacher prep program.
Subbing is an awesome Flexible Gig. If you cannot work for a couple of weeks or for certain days, you won't get in trouble they will always have someone to come in the pool to sub. If you have other jobs or need to make an appointment during the week you can. You can even sub partial (mornings or afternoons for half-day pay). Districts and agencies pay flat rates. In my area, it's $189 for a full day (4+ hours) or $94.50 for a half day (1 - 3.9 hours)
If you decide to do subbing, never take it personally and learn to pick your own battles. You will not be respected as they don't respect their regular teacher. Subs are not expected to teach new concepts unless the teacher knows you are an expert in the subject. If you are not knowledgeable, you can still sub. Teachers need a day off and they will be doing review work or have a study hall period. Just make sure to have good classroom management using proximity and grab student's attention. I'm not a yeller, so I turn the lights off and on to let them know to keep it down or to direct them to the next agenda item. I could be annoying and tell them to put their phones away, but why would I want to risk negative attitudes or confrontation? I have expectations to be mindful of their peers who are studying or doing work and keep noise minium. Students ask if they could listen to music and I let them as long as its using headphones and they are on task. I know the school has a policy of no cell phones in class, but they appreciate that I'm able to fill in. Today there were so many staff shortages and some classes did not have any teachers! As long as the cell phones prevent them from fighting or causing too much chaos, I am sure a sub day is an exception to that policy if its study hall kind of day.
