Perhaps another unpopular placement. But allow me to explain. When I first saw this film I was in awe. I originally gave it ****1/2 because it was so unique and the acting was superb.
However, upon my second viewing there were many glaring issues. The first being the many plot holes. Usually I can over look plot holes but there were many that just cause the whole plot to begin to crumble.
My biggest issue, however, was the humor. Now, I'm fine with humor in horror, just look at Get Out for examples of it done well. On this case it wasn't done well. Each "funny" line felt forced and misplaced. The biggest example is when the tethered first arrive, nearly cripple Winston Duke, and state they're there for revenge and Duke....makes a boating joke? Talk about killing the suspense.
There was good, Lupita Nyong'o put on an award winning performance and everyone else did very well too. This movie was insanely unique plot wise which made it hard to gauge where it was going to go. Regarding the twist, I didn't see it coming but literally all my friends did so maybe I'm just stupid?
Biggest Positive:
The acting in general but specifically Lupita Nyong'o
