I think people like him know they're sinners and are guilty. They have a certain sin they love so much (in Etienne's case it's homosexuality and LGBT culture) that they try to run away from God because they're afraid. They cling to what they do and don't want to admit something is wrong with their lifestyle. But God will accept you as you are. You can come to Him with all the ugliness and all the darkness within and He won't turn you away. He can and will fix you over time but you have to take that first step.
