Androgynous - Feminine

Chanel in this challenge chooses to show the contrast between an androgynous style and a feminine style wearing the same outfit. In this phase we see a jacket that can be worn differently in two ways and completely change the whole image.
In the left photo we see the androgynous look with a more over-sized jacket, strict androgynous hairstyle and similar style. And even the pose he has chosen makes it all look more androgynous. In the right photo we see the exact opposite, a jacket with a narrower line, in its most feminine version. Certainly a look is not only the clothes as it is also the styling, the hair, the make-up and more... The pose here is again more feminine, more revealing and with similar styling more feminine.

And I want to show that clothing is how you wear it and what you want to go through. Chanel here shows two completely different images but with a common denominator, the jacket. Fashion has no limits and it depends on how you wear it and what you want to show off with each outfit.

Challenge #10 - Fashion Fushion

Traditional vs. Unconventional

For my route here I actually had a really easy choice here because I wanted to show the two sides of me I'm truly proud of, up first is the traditional side. I really love leaning into my Korean culture as you can see in some of my photos here, while wearing a very large traditional gown from asian heritage and my makeup and everything brings a classy edge to what I'm wearing there's no doubt I portray a beautiful classic piece of history in this photo

Meanwhile on the other side of the spectrum I am showing off my unconventional fashion side of things I love things that are edgy, punklish, and overall something that is overall crazy and something you wouldn't expect. Here you can see the outfit that I'm wearing goes all over the place and you don't know what to expect with it but my pose, makeup, and everything make sure I'm rocking this to it's full extent.

For today's challenge ALTON MASON is portraying two sides of the same history: captivity vs freedom.

You can understand captivity from different points of view but here let's say that someone is trying to control yourself, the way you act, the way you dress, everything about your life and personality. Some people definitely experience the feeling of having your autonomy taken specially with toxic relationships and it can easily affect your self esteem and emotions. While dealing with that probably you're about to see you in a place that you cannot recognize yourself anymore. You'll feel weird, different and vulnerable. You wanna feel pretty, interesting and attractive but you can't. Your sense of fashion doesn't exist anymore and now you need to fight against that to take control of your identity again.

Freedom, liberty, autonomy. After all those dark moments you now can finally take a deep breath and feel safe again. Freedom is about be yourself in your own way and feel happy, comfortable and proud with that. You have the power to decide and it'll affect not only your decisions but also the way you express yourself to others. Taking it to our fashion topic, freedom gives you the possibility to try new possibilities, colors, designs, shapes, sizes, everything. You don't need to follow the newest fashion trend, but you also can do it if want. There is no rules and standards to be free, just let if flow smoothly like the air.

On my #captivity shoot I'm posing on the floor, I wanted to make it a little bit awkward and uncommon to make people reflect about what's going on in that room. I feel that I could translate the feeling of being a prisoner and my caption helps to connect it perfectly with a fashion concept.

On my #freedom shoot I brought the pose with movements (as usual), a monochromatic outfit and a real atmosphere of a smooth, calm and relaxed moment. Different about the first one I wanted to make sure everyone can understand at the first look the feeling I'm trying to portray cuz as I said before I'm giving two sides (still contrasting tho) of the same history. Once you got to understand the first one, the second is expected to be easier to decifre.

“Light vs Dark”

Whether a photo is light or dark can determine the overall mood of that photo which can determine how we view that photo. Light is often associated with innocence and purity and that is what being displayed in the photo on the left as seen by the white clothing as well as facial expression and innocent eyes. Darkness is often associated with less innocent and more risqué characteristics. The photo on the right is a lot more sexual and provocative than the other and the darkness of it only elevates that feeling much more. It also helps that the “light” photo is more airy as there’s light shining in the background whereas the “dark” photo has more of a hot & sweaty feel to it. I’ve shown in this collage just how wide my range is as a model and that my photos can be pure and innocent, as well as seductive and edgy if need be.

Anja Rubik
Choice: Romantic x Edgy

In the first photo, Anja Rubik is wearing a red dress, well crafted and with a syrup that refers to fairy tales, although the dress is a little different. I understand romantic style as a desire to express your desires in the way you dress. It is a style that allows you to wear an extravagant outfit, but that is beautiful, as well as drawing attention. Anja Rubik's pose harks back to that confidence in herself, as she feels beautiful in this outfit. The special element of the photo is the rose, which represents love, being a striking feature of the romantic style. Whether it's your passion for someone, your family, yourself or fashion, as is the case with Anaj Rubik. Finally, the rose in Anja's mouth is representing desire. The desire to be loved, to be beautiful, to be Anja Rubik.

2. Edgy

"Edgy" is a style that refers to freedom. It is the movement that allows the person to wear what he wants, and what does him good, without worrying about the standards that the fashion industry imposes. In the photo, Anja Rubik has her hair loose, almost messy but still stylish. The clothing is simple, but thick in texture, as we see in the pants and jacket. Anja's outfit could easily and wrongly be attributed to a troubled "teenager." The bold style can be interpreted in a variety of ways, including in a negative way, which is why I chose to wear this outfit and pose in my photo today. Being edgy means being free to use and do what makes you good and happy, without caring about criticism. Anja Rubik's pose and outfit demonstrate that boldness, and the security with herself. She's being edgy.

These themes are opposites, but they can also be complementary. In my photo of the "Romantic" style, Anja Rubik's dress deviates from the pattern, representing the "edgy". In the photo of the "edgy" style, Anja's pose demonstrates self-assurance, which is present, even in small moments, in the romantic style.

Day vs Night

While the photos I chose can be contrasting in more than one way I am focusing on them being evening-wear & daywear.

For todays shoot I went full on high fashion and classy in both my shots while giving completely different ambiences.

In my day shot where I am dressed in a vibrant Jade Pineapple Gucci sweater to fit my high energy fresh morning mood. I’m ready to go all out on a busy day after having my wedge of orange for breakfast to energize myself while the day is still bright. My facial expressions and my pose shows confidence and determination as if I am ready to take the day however it comes.

By the time night falls, I look more exhausted and emotional. After a stressful day, not minding who I'm passing by, I am headed to a quiet place to grab a drink by myself. But of course, I still need to look good and sleek. Hence, I’m dressed in my favorite YSL black outfit to fit my gloomy mood and need to appear dashing even though I’m mentally exhausted after a tiring day.

Confidence vs Insecurity

In my photoshoot I want to demonstrate confidence vs insecurity. So I focused on elements that remind me of these two feelings.

On the confident side, it brought a stronger pose, a more incisive look and more striking clothes and makeup. I want to convey something very striking through colors and energy.

On the other side I work on insecurity with the opposite of the previous photo, in this photo my feeling and face are totally different. My mouth is covered to represent how many times we feel trapped because we don't have the courage to do or go after what we want because we are too insecure to do so.

COMMENTS:

Chanel (Androgynous vs. Feminine) - I like the idea behind this, Chanel. While there are presently contrasting ideas, you were able to point out the common denominator, being is the jacket. For your feminine shot, I think it's good, It is subtle and soft and the white was definitely a good choice. The androgynous one, I am quite 50/50 with it, to be honest. I wasn't able to see it as much as what you've stated and the pose wasn't as strong. Overall, definitely a nice effort.

Sora (Traditional vs. Unconventional) - A smart choice! What a way to really present two different ideas but at the same time work in synergy. Traditional shot, what a nod to your culture, to your roots, just beautiful. But that unconventional shot, you know how I love creativity and art, this is that. Stunning! You played with your strength, that edginess you have. The white outfit contrasting with the other colors was very pleasing to the eyes. A very well-put-together collage indeed.

Alton (Captivity vs. Freedom) - Yet another unconventional choice, Alton. Which I must say works really well in your favor. The ideas of captivity and freedom in your shots were showcased beautifully, these two just felt like art, like something straight from the museum. The color contrasting yet harmonious was also nice. You were able to present fashion ideas in a story, a concept. Overall, both shots were equally strong, and contrast elements were presented in a beautiful manner.

Jonathan (Light vs. Dark) - While you've gone with a more obvious contrast, I found it really smart. You presented the contrasts very clearly. The photos I believe were good, I just wasn't a big fan of how it was cropped, to fit in two squares. When I saw your individual "Light" shot, I found it made sense more in that proportion rather than what was submitted, but that "Dark" shot, technically was presented better. The black & white filter was a nice touch even though I don't think it would've affected much if that was in color.

Anja (Romantic vs. Edgy) - These were interesting choices and very much showed how you are very versatile. You can look both ways and look good doing them. That romantic shot, how can you not see it, At a glance I got it. That edgy shot, while I was getting it in your fashion sense, overall it didn't quite fit and got me as much. That facial expression was good, but that background kind of threw it off and really didn't compliment you. Overall, it still managed to convince me, good collage.

Guinevere (Monochromatic vs. Vibrant) - It did get me confused at first on which is what because the collage vs. the separate shots weren't in the same order, but I think you killed it with both shots. The Monochromatic, while also vibrant was really a strong shot, and definitely, that color stood out was your color. The Vibrant/Colorful one was interesting. This felt like from the same portfolio so it wasn't really hard putting together, both were equally strong, and certainly agree with your statement, that you are wearing those outfits and not the other way around.

Kai (Day vs. Night) - First of all, that Night shot was really good. You explained in a fashion way what you were trying to convey with emotions, which I think you could've easily given contrast or focus to. Individually both are good shots, with very contrasting themes and completely two different and well-put-together styles. In both styles, you pulled it off and had me sold. I think these two shots are easily two of the best shots I've seen you in the competition. Well done!

Xu Meen (Confidence vs. Insecurity) - What a statement here Xu Meen. Both shots are really strong, but I believe I wasn't as convinced with your photo as I was with how you put your explanation in. The fashion statement was definitely smart and the energy felt quite the same in both shots. The black & white and striking clothes through colors didn't make sense much. I guess it was just a missed opportunity since I like both shots as it is and would've made noise if for a different theme.
