KMC2 FINALE Apr 14, 2024: OKAY i’ve had yall wait long enough. We will be doing solo judging this round as Slice is NOT IN HOUSE. For the first round, you were tasked with selecting songs with under 5,000 views on YouTube to submit. You’ve waited long enough so we’ll just be doing short critiques before someone gets cut.

MISSimogen- I like the house backbeat to this song. She’s a little laid back in the song, but it does fit the vibe of the music. And the chorus really opens the song up.

FromAWindow- It was a little bare for me, but the way the chorus crashes in was great. And the 2nd voice was smartly placed because I think they had a power the first one didn’t convey as much.

Currents- The chorus definitely felt euphoric. The speaking part was an interesting break, wasn’t sure if I liked it. But I did enjoy how it floated the vocal melody back in under that. The saxophone jumping in was funny, but it actually boosted the song in my eyes.

JonMcGillis- Such a good jazzy song. Kind of wish she did something else before the ad libs so it would give the song a little more to work with, but she got in and out and I wasn’t mad at it.

FROMAWINDOW. You’ve had a bit of a hectic last few weeks, but I’ve been very impressed with your picks! Unfortunately this was my least favorite of the round (which sucks cause you definitely would’ve made f2 with the Yola pick lmao). Moving on, for the next round you were tasked with pulling songs that felt like a grand finale, a curtain call.

MISSimogen- This felt very much like a song that could get played at the end of a movie during the credits. Loved the vocal stacks and the way the song sounded HUGE by the end.

Currents- Ngl I kind of avoid Caroline’s music as a rule lmaooo. That being said, this was actually much more pleasant than I thought it would be. She made really cool choices with her cadence and the notes she chose and I feel like I got where you were going.

JonMcGillis- I love the psychedelic rock direction you went with. It gives me that feeling of a movie credit roll too, love the drama of it. The runtime hurt you a little though, especially in the cooldown part in the middle of the song. However when it came back in it was right back to being a net positive.

You absolutely dominated this season, and I think you might have my personal music taste down the best of the 4 but sadly I think my interpretation of the themes were different than yours a few times. Currents- Yeah you ate this pick lmao. The HONEY part in particular was an immediate fave when I listened to this album. Now I might be a little biased because of my association with the skittle squad, but idc this song still goes.

JonMcGillis- That “my love’s gone” harmony is stunning, but I think the song really locks in when it transitions into the 2nd part. This was a bold choice since you have to wait a few minutes to get the payoff of the Tyler verse, but it's worth the wait.

First off, congratulations again on making it to the end!! It’s been a wild season, and we’re gonna end on a strong note for sure. A couple of you have played my contest before, but everyone here is a first time finalist so you may not be aware of how the finale format works. If anyone is familiar with RuPaul’s Drag Race, you four will essentially be competing in a ball. Three songs will be submitted for this round, and at the end of each category I will eliminate the least liked song until we have two players left. In the final round, the best song will win.

Just like last season, the first two categories were assigned by the player with the most overall wins, and the player who won the final 5 round. This season, both of those titles happen to go to MISSimogen so she will be deciding both themes! This is a huge advantage as she can play her cards right and easily move to the final 2, where my category will be the final obstacle to winning. So let’s get to the categories.

ROUND 13 THEME- IMOGEN’S CHOICE

For winning the most overall challenges, MISSimogen gets to choose your first category. The category assigned is “UNDER 5K.” You will be looking for songs with less than 5,000 views on YouTube. I will specify that the video has to be from the artist page, or from a “[artist name]- Topic” auto generated page if that’s where they store their music. This may be a tough category for people, so my advice is to google some music publication websites (pitchfork, stereogum, spin, etc) and see what just released music they’re covering. Anything with the last few days may be under that threshold.

KMC2 Round 12 Results Apr 8, 2024: This one was a heartbreaker :/ I’ve been marathoning the songs to just really make sure I feel secure in my choices. I really wish I didn’t have to cut someone this round. But let’s get to critiques.

FromAWindow - She’s got such a cool sound, that chorus is gorgeous. “Counterfeit” would’ve really shaken the table for me personally, but this was a good, maybe more underrated pick. The second section of the song really locked me in, but the first one was still good.

MISSimogen - Oh let me get into this girl cause I liked the first song, but I was INTO this one. The way this song is mixed is so clean, it sounds amazing in my studio headphones. I think the chorus could’ve been a little meatier but the outro part uses that same lyric and I like that, no harm no foul.

Currents - LMAO now how did you pick Jungle cause you knew I liked them then you switched into Janet for pandering? Now don’t get me wrong, it worked. But I actually think I preferred the Jungle and Channel Tres song. I wish you would’ve trusted your gut on it, at the end of the day you (and everyone else) have proven that you can do a good job with a submission. Speaking of, the song is pure summertime joy and lightness. The way you could’ve used this last round too. You picked well either way.

JonMcGillis - I adore this song, there’s a like 9 minute version of it I play sometimes as background music. I’m conflicted cause the instrumentation is gorgeous, his voice is as well, but I almost feel like this song feels different when it’s out of context from the album. Like it really feels great when it’s in that world, and maybe not as much here. Despite that, it’s really such a gripping song. The harmonies >>>>>> And again the studio headphones made his voice sound really crisp.

mathboy9 - I’ve always loved the lyrics to this song. And the frantic feeling of the instrumental pairs so well with them. And her delivery, she’s really performing these words out. It paints such a beautiful picture. I think you picked well, but again I think people picked better sadly. But then, I guess I locked you into this with the limitation on who you could pick.

KMC2 Round 11 Results Apr 8, 2024: Well that was fun, let’s see what I thought about the songs now that the real life stuff has passed for the moment.

Currents - I think both Janet songs were good picks, but you made a good switch here. Janet and Joni’s voices meld together beautifully, and the rap verse is a perfect addition, the “lemme fck with it for a minute” being a great way to step into it. The dancing bass is also a good touch. Very “cool” feeling song.

FromAWindow - LMAO this sample?? It’s a bit chaotic but it fits in the glitchy quality of the beat. The way the beat crashes in is delicious and I like the trade off between them rapping. Also I like that you slipped a couple other samples in with this submission. They could’ve done something at the end, but I was satisfied with the verses enough to not care.

CoolblueP123 - I like the incorporation of some personal culture to these themes, it really makes the submissions unique to you. I couldn’t find an english translation on Google, so I kind of have to take your word for it on the meaning of the lyrics but it was a nice song and I can hear a bit of the sample in the Dua song as well (which makes sense regionally based on where she grew up right?)

MISSImogen - The original is already strong, so this felt like a bit of a challenge to top. And I think you accomplished that well enough with the song. Why did Uzi kind of eat up the singers here lmaoooo. I didn’t dislike the Pinkpantheres verse but i think they were smart to let Uzi lead and draw the listener in. I do feel bad that you pulled out another song from Mura Masa considering what the next theme is, but you weren’t aware of that when you posted so oh well.

JonMcGillis - JPEGMAFIA was popular this round lmao. Submitting a song from the same artist as someone else automatically brings in some direct competition, seeing which song I prefer. I think you lost that battle sadly, though I love the sample and how he plays around it. I feel like he let it ride a little much, wish he could’ve come up with another verse before letting it just play.

mathboy9 - This song also slipped in some additional samples I caught, which I liked for this theme. LOVE the vocal edit going into the chorus, really makes it pop when they add the drums in under her. The bridge was a little under compared to the rest of the song, but it was quick and we went right back to the chorus so it only registered for a second.

ROUND 11- SAMPLE SIZED

In recent years, music publishing has caused many artists to splurge for expensive sounds from times past (to avoid being sued for copyright infringement for accidentally using a melody). The point of this is to touch a feeling of nostalgia within the listener, or help them digest the song more easily because it’s familiar to them. However a lot of times, listeners find the use of these samples to not be used correctly and it causes a negative reaction instead.

For this round, you are challenged to submit a song built around a sample from another piece of music/media. The sample does not have to be a bar for bar remake, but I am going to request that you point out what the sample is if it’s not an obvious one. The goal is to find a song that improves upon the sample, or uses it in a really good way.
