We have an Answer

Dec 23, 2009 by Tengaged_Moderation
Our original plan was to answer all of your questions on the Kris Harris Podcast. However, that show has been canceled and we didn't want you to wait any longer.
All of the moderators helped to answer all of your questions. Randomize answered a couple himself and read and approved all of the questions and answers as well.
If your question wasn't answered remember that you can always send a mail to us or write a blog.
~
Skeet: Why are you biased?

A: We try our very best to remain unbiased. However, it may seem like we make a bias decision to someone who doesn't have all the facts. Sometimes, it may look bias because person A gets banned for doing X and person B only gets a warning for doing X. What you don't alway see or remember is that person A also did Y and had a warning on his record already. Because of privacy issues we try to only give basic details of court cases.
~
JamesM: Is there any compensation given to moderators?

A: No we help because we love Tengaged and want to make it a better place.
~
chris12345: Is tengaged a big company with offices etc or do you work from home?

A: Tengaged is actually only barely a year old. It is still very small but growing (and learning) everyday.
~
Cisco8709: How come people get banned for saying dumb shit like Ima go slice an orange?  Sure its making fun of a event that got two people banned but they did not say they gonna slice someone so I think and im sure tons others think its stupid for people to get banned over it.

A: We're glad that you think that this is a dumb reason to get banned because we do as well. In fact can you name one person that has been banned for this? Neither can we. A good rule for life and especially the internet is to remember that is it sounds ridiculous it probably is untrue.
~
facelift: Why is tengaged court a closed group?

A: After reading this question and answer Randomize added an ANTI SPAM thingy bobber to groups so now the court will not be closed.
~
DirgeThis: How were you picked?

A: Randomize asked us.
~
FrankTurner: How many of you are there?

A: Several
~
Misuse: Is the T_M an actual player on Tengaged?

A: Yes all of the mods have and use their own Tengaged accounts
~
Cisco8709: Can we apply to be a mod?  Or are you chosen?

A: Tengaged is growing everyday and therefore the moderation team will need to continue to grow. If we need help in the future an application
process might be used. For now we have the perfect number of people.
~
VictorOxila: Why don't banned people know how long they're banned for? There should be a system to find out your punishment is for

A: This is what the court was originally put into place for. Most of the time when you are banned you can have a friend post in the court for you and get an answer within 24 hours. However, the moderation part of Tengaged is barely 6 months old and still needs some development. We have given our ideas to Randomize on how to fix the problem and he assures us that it's on his to do list.
~
konohavillage1: why do you keep banning my family members? I've tried signing them up, not my fault we're too poor to afford multiple computers.

A: It is actually based on your ip address. This is another system that
may need work but for now we have to work within the confines that Randomize has set. You should be able you have family members play as long as you don't try to join games together, or plus each others blogs. Also remember that if they break they rules it could jeopardize your account because your accounts are connected.
~
tennisallstar94:

why were YOU chosen out of everyone on tengaged?

A: Randomize asked all of the moderators to help him. We like to think
it was becasue he trusts and loves us :)

why don't you try to combine the users wants with your wants and
ideas?

A: We actually have tried to do this. Every few months there will be new polls posted in the court to get your input on what is acceptable behavior on Tengaged. Also, you are able to state your opinion in every court case as they are open to the public. Sometimes we won't do the popular things and we hope that you will respect that we are trying to make Tengaged a better and safe place. If you have any other ideas on how to involve Tengaged users please write a blog and tell us. Also, Randomize has put several things into place so that everyone can help moderate the site. Report buttons have been added to pictures and blogs. You have the power to remove comment on your blogs and in your groups.
~
konohavillage1: Oh! And if I buy you something, would you wear it?

A: probably
~
josiahbjorke: Why are some people with multis banned and others just red nosed?

A: We have no idea. Our suggestion would be to sacrifice your first born
child to the algo. Getting a red nose is an automated process. Or you could simply never break any rules!
~
Savcodushe: Why is stars pushed up too, blacks and browns? I just got closer to red. now i have to work my ass off again.

A: Stars enrollment is based on the principle of supply and demand. The more people that want to play the higher the price and color level will be. It's one of the perks of having black or brown level.
~
jm101:
a) What is the username of EVERY tengaged moderator, and what position do they hold?(what is that mod in control of)

A: Every day mods have to make unpopular decisions. Sometimes this is
respected and many times it's not. The one mod that is known takes a lot a flack for being a mod. she has personally been threatened, bribed, harassed and had many untrue things said about her. The other mods see this and quite frankly it scares the crap out of them. It's easier to do the right thing (even if it's not popular) when you don't have all of Tengaged breathing down your back.

b) Why cant you remove illegal designs from auctions?

A: Just as Tengaged is growing and changing, so are our moderation tools.  For the time being, our moderation interface doesn't allow us to do this, but this feature is in development by randomize.

c) Why does it seem like you do less moderating than you do threatening? (granted threatening with punishment is okay in some situations)

A: Why try in every situation to not ban a user. We don't want anyone to be without Tengaged.

f) Do you disagree with the scenario of tengaged personally picking half the mods, so that we know that we are being fairly represented? Why?

A: We do only because moderating Tengaged shouldn't be given to those
who are most popular on this site. However if you feel strongly about
this you should write a blog about it. It is Randomize's decision on who the mods are in the end.
~
hoodieboy7449: Why do you never answer people's questions? If you wished to be liked by more people you would answer peoples questions.

A: If you have a questions you can mail TM or post in the court, or write a blog. We are less concerned with being liked and more with making Tengaged a better place.
~
ccpath: did alohalani really get a red nose at day change in stars just so that her noms would not be counted?

A: NO and we think your votes count even if you do have a red nose.
~
konohavillage1: Why do you completely ignore some court cases?

A: If the court case has nothing to do with us or if we've previously
answered the same question your thread will be deleted. In other cases we try to find the answers as soon as we can find out information. Sorry that sometimes it takes longer than others.

Alegeeter: (answered by Randomize)
Who elects the moderators and what is the interview process like?

A: There's no a defined process. If site grows bigger a more defined and open processes will be created.

How are the moderators screened?

A: We have a list of possible moderators. New specific areas will have moderators (area managers) based on personal interests.

What are the qualifications for a "good moderator?"

A:
-1 year in Tengaged is a good thing!
-Did you invite all your friends to Tengaged? ;)
-Can you?
-use sound judgment when dealing with tengaged issues.
-remain neutral and won't take sides when intervening in a "heated" topic.
-treat all members equally and fairly, and won't show favoritism when having to deal with or take action on a particular issue.
-be responsive to member complaints, concerns, and/or questions.
-can keep their cool during tense situations.
~
NathanDamnit: Why does the moderation team let so much vulgar, nasty, racist, prejudiced, homophobic comments slip past without action Especially on a website with MINORS.

A: Actually, if you read the boring stuff at the bottom of Tengaged you would see this: The Site is not directed to persons under 18. We try at all costs to not interfere. We're sorry if we're not always as strict as you think we should be.
~
jHe_07: CAN I CHANGE MY USERNAME?!

A: No :(
~
why can't we do this or that- improvments?

A: We all have LOADS of ideas for Tengaged! We are sure Randomize is not
done making improvments to Tengaged. However, we aren't qualified to answer technical questions.
~
Can we stop Tengaged Brasil from stealing our designs? And maybe even have them lose the stolen designs (and get refunded of course

A: On tengaged.com, we remove designs that are stolen from Brazil; however, Tengaged Brazil has a different staff of moderators.  We do, however, have plans to begin to interface more closely with their moderators and hopefully create some consistency between the sites in terms of moderation.
~
Emmaleigh: Most importantly, why is there an active moderator who constantly makes biased and bad judement calls as well as interacts with minors inappropriately? I have proof if you would like. There should be some sort of demerit system - if a moderator receives 3 strikes then they are demoted. I am sure there are plenty of responsible and willing people who can make better judgement calls. A moderator should never be banned, sets a poor example.
Trust me, one day tengaged will become a liability in some sort of underage lawsuit if things do not proceed more carefully.

Why has unprofessionalism been portrayed through one moderator? You do not see that coming from the other two moderators. Only one feels the need to rant and brag that they are a moderator. Again displays inadequacy and immaturity to make proper judgement calls.

A: When there is an issue involving a moderator, we always make sure another moderator deals with the issue, and ultimately, randomize has final say on any punishments.

We work together to make judgment calls in order to prevent bias, but sometimes need to make quick decisions on our own and without knowing who makes each decision, you can't really make the blanket statement that one person is biased.

It seems that a few individuals have made it their goal to create a smear campaign against Genevere, the one moderator (other than Randomize) who is known publicly, but Genevere cannot be blamed for every decision that is made.

All of the moderation staff (including randomize) is aware of the situations you speak of, but we see no evidence to substantiate your claims.  Your accusations are not ones we take lightly; however, tarnishing someone's reputation in this way can be considered harassment.  Genevere is aware that some of her jokes in the past may have been taken the wrong way and will avoid this type of humor in the future.

If random is looking into things and states he's looking into things why is this never good enough.
*shakes head*
I think if people have a specific example they feel is bias it could be brought up to the court for a discussion by all the mod's to see if it's bias and then there should be some proof why people feel it's bias.

I understand the comments about the "smear campaign" against Genevere. All that aside, T_M please take a look at what you wrote regarding the qualifications of a mod.

"-Can you?
-use sound judgment when dealing with tengaged issues.
-remain neutral and won't take sides when intervening in a "heated" topic.
-treat all members equally and fairly, and won't show favoritism when having to deal with or take action on a particular issue.
-be responsive to member complaints, concerns, and/or questions.
-can keep their cool during tense situations."

treat all members fairly? keep cool during situations? responsive? REMAIN NEUTRAL?

Yes, I'm not a fan of Genevere but I can even take a neutral stance and still see that Genevere does not possess any of these qualities. IF she's still going to be a mod, at least have randomize have a talk with her about the proper ways to talk and behave to people.

Sent by bradd156,Dec 26, 2009
I must say that I am in total disagreement with the lack of transparency regarding identity of Mods. Yes, there is the potential for getting flack but that's part of the job of being a moderator. If the system is as fair and balanced as you say (past records influencing current decisions) then it should not matter at all as every decision would have an understandable justification based on the TOS and the user's violation thereof. I have witnessed obvious rule violation go unpunished and mentions of said mysteriously disappear from the court. Sorry, I don't think it's a matter of privacy or avoiding having people breathing down your neck. I think there is definitely an element of hiding from poor decisions and/or not wishing to expose their biases. Transparency is the easiest solution to that and the fact that it is not considered standard practice says a lot.
