Do you have an opinion on the common core education program that's supposed to be implemented nationally?
I have a relative who teaches special ed in a school district a couple hours away from me, and she hates the "module" system the program uses. It blows up the tiniest thing/event and then has students talk about it to a ridiculous point. One such module was Jackie Robinson and the vicil rights movement both in and out of baseball, which my sister talked about. While I agree learning about the civil rights era is important, it's completely replaced stuff like basic Geography and States/State Capitals, which I personally think is also important in a Social Studies component of any elementary/middle school.
In terms of math there are some really convoluted problems I've seen, the supposed "critical thinking" it's supposed to promote just makes the problems sound confusing. If Bob has 156 apples and gives Carol 40, why do I have to write a letter to Bob to tell him how to solve the problem?
In addition, the aforementioned relative has reported numerous spelling and grammatical errors from the company contracted to make the textbooks and modules, modules which require teachers to lose time with their class while they "learn how to teach" whatever the module is.
Personally I think CC has good intentions and is a sound program in itself, but the way in which its implemented and (to a certain extent) the people implementing it are what makes it so flawed.
