So… the theme of the first round was to simply submit a film that was not already on my MPA list.

Let’s see what I thought of all of your films.

Voila’s Submission:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: So, romance movies admittedly aren’t really my thing, but this was one that I moderately enjoyed. I liked the whole thriller-mystery vibe to it, along with some of the supernatural elements. There were some moments in the film that I believe could’ve been executed better, but ultimately it was an enjoyable viewing experience. I don’t think this would be a film I would want to watch again, but I still think it wasn’t a bad film at all.

Krystal’s Submission:

𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗸 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟱)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: I’ll start off by saying that this was not at all what I was expecting… and I absolutely mean that in a positive way. I had heard about this film, but I didn’t know at all what it was about, so I went into it completely blind. I was honestly expecting a Victorian period drama of some kind, and I had no idea that this film was actually a horror-thriller. I didn’t even know it was directed by Guillermo del Toro until I watched the end credits, and that alone made me appreciate the film a lot more. I enjoy del Toro’s work, and this film definitely displays his talent for filmmaking. Overall, while this movie wasn’t perfect in my opinion, it was a great watch and might even be a film I’d recommend to moviegoers wanting a sophisticated yet gruesome thriller experience.

Jeffrey’s Submission:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟰)

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞.

Review: Many consider this to be one of Disney’s best films, if not the best. To be honest, though, I never really cared too much for the film as a kid, and I think because of that I’ve never had a desire to watch it again as an adult. However, I’m very glad that I got to watch it for this game. I can see clearly what makes this film a cult classic to not only Disney fans, but movie fans in general. The brilliant music, the compelling story and characters, and even the bits of comedic relief blend together perfectly to deliver a classic movie for all ages to enjoy. Overall, I appreciate this film a lot more as an adult than I did as a kid.

Thirteen’s Submission:

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘆 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: So… this film actually reminded me a lot of a film I had watched in my previous version of my movie taste game called The Feast (2021), and not just because it was a film spoken entirely in a European language, but because it also takes place in a fancy country home and had a few elements that were hard to make sense out of. Seeing your submissions from LaCroix’s movie taste game, I was expecting you to submit something dark and twisted… and this movie was exactly that. Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate dark and twisted horror movies, but only when the movie itself can deliver as well. This movie wasn’t horrible, but it was extremely slow, and had some scenes I felt it could’ve done without. Plus, I kinda saw the movie’s big twist coming from a mile away. I was getting suspicious twenty minutes in, but by the halfway point I knew almost exactly what was going on, and that Lukas was simply a delusion in Elias’s head as a result of some freak accident that must have killed him. It was an interesting watch, but not one I would want to watch again.

Michael’s Submission:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗞𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟴)

𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞.

Review: I was six years old when this movie came out. When it was out on DVD, my dad rented it and watched it with me. I was only a kid at the time, so I was never really into superhero movies targeted at adults, and as a result I don’t remember caring for it. I’m almost 20 today, and I’m glad to say that isn’t the case anymore. I watch all the new Marvel movies that have been coming out, and I even saw the new Batman movie that came out earlier this year. However, when I watched this film again after about 12 years… I’m sad to say I still don’t think I care for it. I never realized that so many of the quotes I see all over the Internet came from this movie… but I don’t know, I just didn’t really like it as much as other people do. I don’t think this movie was bad, but when I compare it to The Batman (2022), I would prefer to watch that again over this. I have nothing against people who love this film, but it unfortunately wasn’t a Batman film I would want to watch for a third time :(

Josh’s Submission:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀: 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟴)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: Very interesting choice to choose a sequel film. Believe it or not… I actually have heard of this film before. I watched the kill count for it on a YouTube channel called Dead Meat, as well as the film’s predecessor. So… while I have technically never actually WATCHED it before, I had heard the whole plot of the film and had a good idea of what to expect. To be fair, though, that was years ago, way before I began my hobby of collecting MPA numbers. I think I spoiled the Strangers movies for myself because I didn’t think I’d ever watch them… but life is crazy isn’t it? Anyway, regarding the movie itself, it really wasn’t bad. I’ve seen better horror movies and I’ve seen worse. It did some things right like creating likable protagonists and having them make smart decisions, but did suffer from a few horror cliches like a car not starting when you need it to and the killer somehow popping back to life when he appeared to be dead. Overall, there were a couple things in this movie I appreciated, but ultimately it’s just a meh movie for me. It’s not one I feel like I’d easily remember and not one I’d want to watch again.

Juniper’s Submission:

𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟯)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: So… I don’t really know what to make of this. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a film that was written by Quentin Tarantino… not because I don’t want to, but because I’ve never had a strong desire to. I’ve heard nothing but praise for his work, however, and have hoped to one day watch some of his greatest films such as Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill. While this film isn’t on the list of his ten directed movies because he didn’t direct this, I’d still like to say that this was my first ever Tarantino movie. And tbh, I feel like this was a good place to start in his work… but that’s because I don’t think I was too fond of this film. It’s not that I thought it was bad, it’s just… it’s not my kind of movie. I’ve already mentioned that romance movies aren’t my thing, and mafia movies aren’t something I’m interested in either, and this movie was practically a mixture of those things. It just felt like an endless string of gun violence from scene to scene. That’s probably what Pulp Fiction will be like, but at least that film will have the entertaining Samuel L. Jackson throughout it’s runtime, as opposed to his 30 seconds of screen time in this movie. Overall, I have no problem if you loved this film, but it’s just not a film for me.

Akshar’s Submission:

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟮)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: I remember seeing trailers for this movie in theaters. My dad showed interest in wanting to see it, but I don’t believe we ever did. However, I do remember seeing that it got good reviews, so when I saw that I would be watching it for this game, I looked forward to it. After watching it, I was not left disappointed. This film delivers on acting, comedy, and even suspense. It was hard to predict how things would play out, and I was always entertained throughout the whole film. And also… I must admit I have a soft spot for treasure hunting films. My only criticism on this movie is that I’m not sure it’s a film I would easily remember. It was great, but also a little forgettable in my opinion. Other than that, I have no complaints. This film was a decent watch!

Tommy’s Submission:

𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 (𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟰)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: I’m grateful that I watched the original Conjuring movie in my original movie taste game before watching this. What’s odd though is that while I haven’t seen the original Annabelle film, I actually have seen the prequel film Annabelle: Creation (2017). Now that I’ve seen this movie, I have a better picture on the whole Annabelle story. As for the movie itself… I know that it has a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, and because of that I had low expectations… but it honestly wasn’t THAT bad. I really don’t understand the low rating because while this film did have faults, it had some decent scares throughout. The acting, however, felt a little off in certain places… and the whole ending twist was something I found to be stupid and unsatisfying to the story. Plus, it felt really slow in certain places. So, ultimately this film was just an average horror movie for me. I don’t think it deserves a 29%, but there was a lot about it that I didn’t love. I’m currently still trying to figure out how I feel about the entirety of the conjuring franchise.

Isla’s Submission:

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟰)

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦.

Review: What the hell was this… I’m at a loss for words. I’m just gonna put it simply… this was a horrible film. I felt like I lost brain cells from watching this. It was unfunny, cringy, and not to mention the racial complications. And also, by the time I got to this film, it was no longer available on the platform you originally said it was available on. The only way I could’ve watched it for free legally was on HBO Max… and they only had the unrated version. I feel like the movie’s unrated bits made the movie even worse. I literally feel like my IQ has dropped drastically after watching this film. Before I watched it, I told my dad about it and how I had to watch it for my movie taste game. He suggested that I eliminate the user who submitted the film on the spot for making me watch this garbage. You’re lucky I like to play this game fairly.

Congratulations to Krystal, Jeffrey and Akshar! You are the top 3 point getters this week! Now, I had a really tough time deciding between which of 2 films should win this round, but I think I’ve finally settled on one of them.

CONGRATULATIONS KRYSTAL! Your film has been ranked the highest for this round! I had been going back and forth for the longest time on whether to out this film or the Lion King at the highest… but ultimately I’ve settled on this film because it seems to fit my taste in movies a little more. As much as I loved the Lion King, I had to give the award to this film, which has already become one of my favorite Guillermo Del Toro films!

Your film has been ranked the highest out of all the films submitted this round, meaning that not only will you receive the maximum of 10 points for this round, but you will also be immune from elimination in the next round! Congratulations!

Now that we’ve seen the best… it’s time for the worst.

I’m so sorry to Thirteen, Juniper and Isla, but you are the bottom 3 for this round. Now, I know for sure which film I’m ranking the lowest, because of these 3 films, I didn’t necessarily hate 2 of them… I just wasn’t that impressed by them. One of them, however, was truly awful, and absolutely deserves the lowest ranking. However, my new format focuses on specifically the 2 worst films, so instead of 1 worst film of the round, there will be 2.

I’m sorry Isla, but your film was by far the worst film of this round. It was literally just full of unfunny and cringy humor, and I hated it so much. The only silver lining to having viewed this film is that now that I have it’s number on my MPA list, I never have to watch it again.

Juniper, I’m sorry that you’re also in the bottom 2. Your film honestly doesn’t deserve as much hate as White Chicks does. It’s just that your film doesn’t align with my movie taste at all. I understand that other people love the film, and I don’t have anything against anyone who does. But unfortunately, it’s a film that I just don’t care for at all.

If this were any other round, Isla and Juniper would both be in danger of being eliminated. However, I do not eliminate anyone in the first round of my game. So Isla and Juniper, you guys are getting another chance to impress me in the next round. Choose your next submission carefully, because if you don’t, and you end up in the bottom 2… you’ll actually be in danger of getting eliminated. And remember, the player who gets eliminated will be the player with the lowest overall score.

Here were the official rankings:

1. Crimson Peak (+10)
2. The Lion King (+9)
3. The Lost City (+8)
4. The In Between (+7)
5. The Strangers: Prey at Night (+6)
6. The Dark Knight (+5)
7. Annabelle (+4)
8. Goodnight Mommy (+3)
9. True Romance (+2)
10. White Chicks (+1)
