Episode 1 “New Beginnings”
Finley’s eyes opened at the sound of Furi’s town bell ringing frantically. He got out of bed, the bell and the bed creaking as he sat up was the only sounds he heard. The rest of his family were silent, maybe they were sleeping, Finley thought to himself. With his feet on the cold wooden floor, we walked out of his room and into the hallway. None of his family made a noise, no loud snoring from his father, no shower running. Nothing. “Hello?” Finley called out. No response, just the bell continuing to ring ferociously. His phone got a ring.
Finley went to his phone beside his bed.
“Valentine”
The bells were still ringing. Finley answered. “Finley? Are you here?” Valentine asked, just like the bells, she sounded frantic. “Yeah? What’s going on?” Finley asked. “Somethings happened to this town. Most of the population has disappeared” she announced to him. His stomach sank. “What?” Finley asked again, as he walked to the hallway and opened his parent’s room. Gone. Sister’s room. Gone. 7:30 am on a Saturday. “My family isn’t here” Finley reported, confided. “See! Something is going on. Get to the church!”. Valentine hung up.
Finley got to the church, dressed. Almost no cars moved and little people were in town as he walked from his house to the church. Inside, as little as around 20-30 people were sitting down, chatting to each other, asking questions, calling people who wouldn’t pick up. Finley sat at the back of the church.
Valentine stood at the front, facing everyone. “Everyone please calm down and listen!” she said aloud. One by one people went quiet. “From what we can see, is that we are the only ones not missing. No one who’s where are families and neighbours are” Valentine began.
“This may be some weird prank, or something serious is going on. 911 doesn’t work. Internet doesn’t work. Power and running water is what we have left, besides calling and texting one another” Valentine added. “This is bullshit! Why the fuck are we listening to you?” JP asked, a sexist 18 year old who has a history of harassing women. “I did” Finley said aloud, standing up and walking to the front. Valentine smiled. “We have to figure this out, together” Finley said to everyone. Valentine put a map of the town on the ground. “We need to split up, in groups of 2/3 let’s go around every block getting everyone we can. Meet back here at midday and go from there” Valentine said, writing names together with blocks of the town.
Adam, a closeted gay guy was paired with Jeremy, a party animal known for being gay. The two walked together, getting to know each other as they knocked on houses. “I haven’t chatted to you since elementary school” Jeremy said. “Yeah, it’s been a while. We used to hang out as kids” Adam added. “It sucks things drifted as kids, high school does that for sure” Jeremy said. Jeremy and Adam approached a small single story house, cardboard covering a broken window. Jeremy knocked. Adam and Jeremy heard footsteps and the door opened. Dani opened the door, an 18 year old chick known for being a meth addict after her violent ex got her hooked, before he ended up in jail.
“What?” Dani shouted, she looked like she had just awoken, her blonde wavy hair was a mess and her smudged makeup from last night was causing her to breakout. “Go to the church, emergency. The whole town is missing” Adam said politely. “Good, judgemental fucks” Dani said and closed the door infront of Adam and Jeremy.
Bryce was with Ty, both close friends for years. They had finish their block and was sitting outside on a porch, sharing a cigarette. “Do you think we will get rescued?” Ty asked, inhaling the addictive toxins into his lungs, and blowing it back out, the smoke dancing violently as it went into the air. Bryce thought. “Realistically, Yes. But it depends on how long. This isn’t some prank, 100’s of people don’t just vanish” Bryce said honestly. Ty drew smoke back into his lungs and passed the cigarette to Bryce. Bryce inhaled and opened his mouth, and breathed through his nose and the smoke followed. “But, it this is permanent, it’s not a terrible thing” Bryce said. Confused, Ty looked at Bryce. “Why’s that?” Ty asked.
“Because someone will be in change of this place” Bryce said, a faint smirk conceived from his lips.
Finley and Valentine were at the church, finished their block. It was 11:30 and they were waiting for everyone to dribble in slowly. Manny, an arrogant and popular guy, walks up to the pair. “How about we throw a party at mine, a nice distraction” he offers. Finley shrugs. “Sure, why not” Valentine replies. Manny smirks, “I was gonna throw one even if you didn’t want it to happen” Manny snaps and turns to everyone. “PARTY AT MINE, BRING YOUR PWN BOOZE!” Manny shouts and people start to cheer.
Hours go by and all 35 people are in the church, they go over what may be happening to them and when or if they’ll be rescued, everyone heads to Manny’s house and parties.
“Today’s fucking weird” Olivia shouts to her best friend, Adelaide. “Tell me about it. The music is loud” Adelaide replies, drink in her hand. Manny walks up to the pair. “Ladies, do any of you wanna come upstairs with me?” he asks confidently. “Fuck no” Adelaide replies, knowing of his reputation as a womaniser. Manny looks at Olivia. “No” Olivia replies, holding your stomach. “You all good?” Manny asks, looking at her hand. “Yeah...I’m just pregnant” Olivia replies, a small bump sticks out of her stomach.
