Bottom line is that one can easily lie about their age, making the age increase obsolete.
So the only route is a massive scale back of the allowable NSFW content and an absolute ban on obscenity (which is a grey area). At the end of the day, this isn’t a dating site, or even a “social media” site. It’s not even a forum, technically. First and foremost this is a gaming site, which happens to HAVE a blogs page. It’s in the same category of League and online games like that, not Facebook or Reddit (which wouldn’t allow a lot of what goes down on here anyways...). Not to say that tengaged hasn’t evolved into a social media site, but it’s a warped one which needs fine tuning if it’ll continue.
Don’t rely on the immaturity of <18 year olds to admit their age when the whole purpose of the rule would be to prevent them from seeing material they shouldn’t. That’s like saying the “you must be 18+ to enter” screens before porn sites are a secure prevention plan. Do what makes sense and rely on the supposed maturity of adults to limit the extremity and obscenity of their speech. Why do you need to discuss sexual content on here?
