So I see these blogs saying what the whole point of pride is, so I think it's important to educate yorself on what is pride, and why it happens.
Why does Pride happen in June?
The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969.
What were the Stonewall riots?
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street, in neighboring streets and in nearby Christopher Park. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.
Pride is two things, celebrating the past about how far we've come as LGBT figures become more prominent in the world because of events like Stonewall giving them the ability to do so. Think of it, like Independence Day.
But the second thing is that it's positive discrimination, it's celebrating a marginalised group, the same way that there are Black Lives Matter marches.
People saying that pride is just being gay thrown in their face, well, no one complains on St. Patrick's Day about Irishness thrown in your face.
This is just a brief explanation of what pride is, so research more about it, learn more and have a happy, fun and safe pride <3
