Photoshoot #2

"Pop Culture"

Hi guys, today we're going to have an interesting photoshoot. This shoot was featured on Cycles 9 and 10 of the Next Top Model.

For your photoshoot we are talking about "Pop Culture". So basically what is it? It is the entirety of attitudes, ideas, images, perspectives, and other phenomena within the mainstream of a given culture, especially Western culture of the early to mid-20th century and the emerging global mainstream of the late 20th and early 21st century.

Here, we are taking a hit on the pop culture's entertainment and fashion. So, what you need to present us is basically a photo which will appeal to the masses - mostly the millennials. Describe us the lifestyle and tastes of the majority "younger" ones. Music by Taylor Swift, BTS, Spice Girls, Justin Bieber, etc, appeals to the young ones. Movies like Friday The 13th, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, Fast & Furious, The Avengers, also did have the chance to be on the spotlight, now it's your turn.

Taylor Swift is one of the biggest stars in the world. One of her famous albums is her album called "Red" . The Album, "Red" was number one on Billboard 200 and it also contained songs like "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" , "22", and "I Knew You Were Trouble".

-Challenge Comments from Judge Augusta-

Hi guys! Sorry for the minor delay, but here are your challenge comments. Overall, I am impressed with the caliber of this season.

Ariadna: I like this photo. I can definitely see you highlighting some traditional aspects of masculinity, while still looking quite feminine. You look really powerful, which transcends gender. My issue is similar to last week in that you appear more commercial, and that high fashion / couture aspect is lacking with you.

Bright: I do like that your styling is pretty gender-neutral and that you're giving off a softer aura than your last photoshoot. Your background is a bit distracting - I kept looking at the window to your left. I don't love the slouch pose either since it makes you look smaller, but overall I think that this is solid.

Naty: Wow I love that jacket and the slacks on you - you do look absolutely amazing and it is such a great cross of masc/fem. I see your logic for the flats but wow they are hideous. Everything about this photo is great besides that - you could have been a winner for me but the sandals gotta go. I still scored you high though :)

Ming: Damn you're all so good, but yeah this is great. Probably favorite styling so far (along with Naty) and I want those pants. The dog tag gives it an extra masculine touch. I think you could have done something more interesting pose-wise with your body, specifically your left hand looks awkward. Regardless, I think you have a lot of talent and will go far.

Caroline: This is just okay for me. I definitely see the attempt for masculinity, but the outfit kind of eats you up. The pattern is great but it's just so big on you especially in the trousers. But this has been a really strong challenge across the board, so it's not bad, just you got overshadowed in my opinion.

Jacob: I'm a little disappointed Jacob since I rated you so highly in the photoshoot, but this is kind of a messy for me. I definitely see the idea of genderfuck that you went for, but the poor lighting really makes it difficult to make out the photo. The pants fit you really nicely though. Not sure what kind of face you're making - it isn't too flattering. I know you can turn it out in the photoshoot this week!

Fernanda: Similar to my critique for Caroline... it's an okay shot for me. I enjoy the contrast of colors and the patterning of your outfit, but there's some flaws. Your face doesn't really match the scene / you look scared or concerned, when I really wanted to see power. Your fit is better than Caroline, though. Hmmmm you did okay I think. :)

Aline: I literally said "oh wow" when I pulled up your submission on my computer. This really is exactly what I was hoping for. Your pose is so powerful and you're bringing this masculine aura while still looking so beautiful. I love the angling of this shot... you look like a CEO. My only critique comes down to lighting because the shadow on your face doesn't highlight you as much I'd like. Good job!

Francis: And now I said "oh my god" when I pulled up your photo. Honestly, this might be the worst submission I've ever seen for top model. You have a ratty Sia wig on in front of a cheap couch. I guess you kind of tried to go for the masc/fem concept, so I'm not gonna give you a 0 but like no more Instagram photos. This is Top Model not Casting Couch for a porn or something :|

Robbie: I mean you're really hot but you kinda missed the challenge concept. It's like you took a photoshoot and tried to make it fit the category. The feminine aspect is totally lacking, but besides that, you do look great. I can't score you too high though because of the above reason though...

Ajak: I appreciate you thinking outside the box for this one, and I think it paid off. I definitely see the masculine energy from you even without a suit on. It's a little posey, but I love your styling and you clearly know the angles of your face. Overall good work. :)

Victor: Definite points for trying to meet the challenge criteria, which you did in terms of giving both a masc & fem aura. But the outfit looks like a gay leather harness and a hefty garbage bag wrapped around your waist. I know you can do better styling wise. Your face is great though but step it up if you wanna be on top!

Jason: This is definitely an interesting shot. I get the feminine touch from the styling, which by the way, is impeccable. Your face is great and I can see why you would do great in the high fashion world. I would have loved a bit more color, but I like that your face is highlighted since it is so strong! Love Givenchy as well, so great choice.

Joan: Well my eyes went straight to your vagina with that pose, so that's not the best but besides that I like this shot a lot. Definitely masculine and feminine energy. That jacket is so sick and I love it being paired with some high heels. Also love the slicked back hair on you, which is somewhat of a theme.

Top 3 --> Ming, Aline, Jason
Bottom 1 --> Francis (had to call you out separately because I'm still offended)

In 2017 Jordan Peele released the hit horror movie, Get Out. This had a huge impact on pop culture, because it featured a person of color as the main character of a horror movie. This movie also made him a staple in the horror industry, making him one of the bigger names within the genre.

Within Get Out, the sunken place is created. It's a place where someone can be lost within themselves. I'm using that as my reference, since the sunken place itself has also made its place within pop culture. The sunken place gets referenced as one of the more terrifying things in recent horror.

In Pop Culture theres always those movies about going to the big city, and trying to chase your dreams with an internship, or a job, and realizing that it's a lot harder than expected. Movies like Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure, Devil Wears Prada, and shows like Degrassi and Glee. They all showed the struggle of moving to a big city, and how it can change you.

I'm showing here that the struggle can be real, and that the big and busy city can outright consume you and change you, like they show in those movies. Theres a lot to look at, but you can see in my face it's a struggle to actually survive and chase my dreams.

When i think of Pop Culture, i think of magazines. I think of youth and adolescence. I think of all the times when i was younger & i'd flip through the hottest magazines such as Glamour, Vogue, Cosmo & i'd see these beautiful models having various spreads in them. Pop Culture to me can't really be defined and molded & put into a little "box" It's a number of things, depending on how you view it. For this photo, i'm giving CATALOG! I've always felt strongly with models who got to be on the cover of some hot magazine for millions to see. I also feel like Pop Culture in this day and age is all about wealth & success and money. People like the Kardashians and "The Real Housewives" who are well known because of their money are icons in todays pop culture. I think this photo gives off wealthy, successful vibes. I'm dressed down in expensive clothing and jewelry. It's very commercial and very catalogue.

13 reasons why is a show that came out a couple years ago and (the first season) is about a girl who took her own life and left behind tapes which are her 13 reasons for doing so. These tapes made everyone who listened to them feel even more guilty for what they did or paranoid that they were a reason someone died. Clay Jensen is one of the main characters, who we follow through this season and he just received the tapes. Clay takes the longest time to get through the tapes because he finds it hard to listen to his dead friends voice and listen to all the terrible things that had happened to her.

In this photo I portray Clay, where throughout his journey of listening to the tapes he becomes depressed and even guilty when he reaches his own tape.

When I saw the theme for this photoshoot one of the main tropes that came to mind for me is the stereotypes of Bad Boys. Any show you watch, any movie you fall in love with, a boyband you may obsess over, there is always a "Bad Boy" esque character that creates a mood for the setting and makes you fall in love. Tony Stark from Avengers, Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl, and Zayn Malik from One Direction are perfect examples of the Bad Boy Trend. This trend gives people something to imagine over, Edward Cullins from The Vampire Diaries is another good example. Just think about it and you got yourself a bad boy in almost everything Pop Culture.

So with this photo I channel my own version of the inner bad boy that the main girl character swoons over. Hopefully she chooses me over the good boy like the Kissing Booth!
