I can relate. I usually either just make sarcastic comments or wait for an opportunity to join in. It can be awkward when I try and make an effort and no one is paying attention (again, I like making sarastic comments in these situations :D), but I just try, try, try until I am either acknowledged or I feel like doing something else.
