Awkward moment today

I was trying to make talk with one of my Co-workers who I know has a boyfriend who has kids. They were suppose to have birthday party this weekend for her boyfriend's daughter and then go to the fair.

So of course I asked how did the fair/birthday party go, and she got silent then started crying

Apparently they broke up over the weekend.
