Why do we ban people for using bad words?

Why do people think saying "the F word" or "the N word" should be bannable? I think it's a matter of oversensitivity. Enforcing rules like this is, in my opinion, too militant.

There's no reason to get offended by people who don't actually know you saying mean words to you. Individual words have the weight you give them.

If someone does know you and wanted to hurt you through text, I'm sure they could do better than just using a slur. They could say something pointed and personal without using those words and it would sting a million times worse than anything some rando could put together. And they would get punished for harassment, which is already something grounded in much more sense than just banning for use of a word.

Suppose I'm mislead with these beliefs. Even then, banning people for two weeks for using a no-no word isn't gonna make them change. They won't come to some sudden enlightenment that, "oh maybe I shouldn't call people dumbass n***** f******s." They'll realize "oh maybe I shouldn't call people dumbass n***** f*****s *on tengaged.*" They'll just tiptoe around using the word instead. If your goal is to combat homophobia/racism with this rule, I'll just tell you straight up that I don't see it working anytime soon. The only function I see for the rule is for people with vendettas to keep tabs on someone until they use a banned word so that they can whistleblow and get them off the site.

But that's just how I see the situation. What do you think?

are you really saying a black person shouldnt be offended by being called the n word? people need to have responsibility for their actions

LMAO agreed but then u have to remember we're the minority and the majority of tengaged are gimpy kids who cry to the teacher whenever someone makes fun of them in school instead of saying something back or trying to hold their gayass tears in

still kids going around saying n****** for jokes are more pathetic

Memphis_Grizzlies As I said in my post, words have the weight you give to them. There's not much sense in getting offended by internet randos.

Why would anyone want to say the n word? Sure theres certain black people who belive only they can say it since it was a word to oppress them specifically, but it's just causes too much problems. (Applicable with the f word)

_Adidas_ I see your point. Recently I feel like the words (particularly n) have slowly shifted in meaning over time such that the connotation can vary depending on context.
There are also some words that use the f-word that I don't feel have a very malicious intent (e.g. "f** hags" which seems to be used but isn't necessarily derogatory, just slang). In the case of the f-word it can also just mean something completely different like f** can just refer to a cigarette butt.

evergreen I agree that context does matter but the cigarette meaning is hardly used in modern language and the difference between both meaning is obvious.
As for the n word, the -ga can sound less offensive when referring to a friend but like I said above not everyone is entitled to say it

_Adidas_ I think anyone should be entitled to say anything on the internet, but either way, if the -ga ending is only to be used by black people, how could that really be enforced on this site? I feel like it's a better course of action to just not enforce the rule at all. If people deem someone as going way out of line, they can be socially rejected.

evergreen on this site noone can say those words for the same reason that noone has special privilages for being black or gay
The real life is different. If you say those things online and you know the repercussions, then expect people will not agree with your beliefs

_Adidas_ But why restrict people from being able to say things? I think repercussions should take their course from within the site's userbase and not from a 16 year old governing the site. If someone is punished socially they will adapt much better than if someone is punished by a lone entity (admin).
