[lukey's library] jan + feb Mar 7, 2022: hii! this is going to be a new series on my blog where i rate all the books i read in the past month. since this is new for me, i'm going to do a ranking of all the books i read in january and february, and i definitely didn't read as much in january as in february, so yea! in total i read 5 books between jan and feb (not a lot aww robbed, trying to read a lot in march), so let's start!
i rate books from 0-6, and anything 3.5 or above is good! five and above are amazing!

ALSO there will be minor spoilers for all the books listed

5: my year of rest and relaxation by ottessa moshfegh (4/6)
okay i have a LOT of choice words for this fucking shit right here. so basically dissociative feminist booktok paraded this book around as their manifesto - and what i was HOPING to get was an unlikable female protagonist who i could relate to their despair. the result was… definitely not that? I MEAN you could probably relate to the protagonist if you are like, part of the top 10% of americans in terms of wealth, but like she's just a rich white girl who is shitty to all of her friends and stereotypes all of the POC around here lol. the facets of the book that i DID enjoy was moshfegh’s engrossing writing (which really is a big reason for this rating), and how the book really delves into how WASPs look at the rest of the world with really no worries, as the protagonist has the luxury that a lot of people really want - doing nothing <3

4: convenience store woman by sayaka murata (4/6)
this book is great! it follows a woman, keiko, who spends most of her adult life as a convenience store worker, and sort of highlights a period in her life where she meets this misogynist and their relationship. i personally found this book to have VERY heavy marxist undertones (i.e. keiko having so much love for her job, generally associated with low skill/minimum wages), so yea! also there’s a theory that she’s autistic which DOES make sense upon reflection.

3: frankenstein: the 1818 text by mary shelley (4.5/6)
cute little classic! basically follows this man, victor frankenstein, who attempts to resurrect life and creates a “daemon” which drives him insane. the beginning is a bit boring, but it really does delve into really insightful thoughts of technology and science, man vs creation, and like how isolation in the STEM fields isn’t very good, which are still relevant just over 200 years.

2: the bluest eye by toni morrison (4.5/6)
inspired from the iconic olympia blog, i read this book and…. WOW. what a debut. it follows a ohio town in 1941 (?) and the relationship between sisters claudia and frieda, and the town pariah, pecola breedlove. an EXTREMELY insightful look into race, colorism, sex, and colonialism in only about 200 pages, i will definitely be thinking about this book for awhile. Did have to deduct some points for a really random rape scene like LOL why did she include that.

1: things fall apart by chinua achebe (5/6)
was not expecting this to be my favorite book this year! literally THEE african classic, follows a nigerian tribe, and the town’s unofficial patriarch, okonkwo, through daily life until british missionaries come in attempts to colonize the tribe. this book’s writing is so simple but SO GOOD, like oh wow that’s so insane. all of the characters are so good, and have character development, and there really isn’t a boring moment in the book or a point in the book where it falters, something interesting is always happening. the ending is also… WOW. also read this if you haven’t
